Southern Pacific 2472's Final Day of Steam on the Niles Canyon Railway

On September 7th of 2015 the Golden Gate Railroad Museum ran their final steam excursion on the Niles Canyon Railway. This video was a great pleasure to film and edit and we look forward to what GGRM has in store for the future!

When 2472 originally entered service, she ran between Sparks, NV and Ogden, UT. I'd sure love to see her run unassisted there again sometime!

Update: The Golden Gate Railroad Museum has begun moving their equipment to the Northwestern Pacific Railroad at Schellville. One rumor is that they would still like to have 2472 operational on the NWP. Let's hope so.

@@cambridgeh.lutece6658 2467 was operational at some point in the late 90s and early 2000s but isn’t operational anymore. 2472 however has been brought back up to steam and might return to Nile’s canyon.

This is awesome news for me. I have a photograph of an engine just like this coming into Pacific Grove, just across the bay, on the old delmonte express - around 1954/55. I rode the delmonte as a kid but just missed steam by a couple years which has always haunted me. My dream would be to see this make it all the way into downtown Monterey. Watsonville is so close it hurts, lol. I can dream anyway! P.S.; add more trains and get some tourists out of their cars and off hwy 1! Sorry to drift off topic but that's a good idea I think. Can't wait to see how this evolves.

Thanks for that video. The first minute was the best, when you got her blowing down, with the beautiful clouds of steam. That was gorgeous! And, man -- is she ever SQUARE!! (Perfectly even exhausts = chugs). That is the very first recording I have ever heard where everyone could clearly hear lots of her wonderful stack talk, without her whistle or bell drowning it out! Thank you VERY much for that! That was a real treat. :) (A correction to your title, if I might. Sept. 7, 2015, was not her "last day in the Canyon". It was probably her last public excursion in Niles Canyon. but your title means that she was being moved out of Niles Canyon the very next day --which is not true. And, AFAIK, no one knows when she and the rest of the GGRM's equipment will actually leave Niles Canyon.)

I am well aware that it isn't her last day there. I work for GGRM getting the equipment ready and inventorying. That's how I got the cab ride. But which is a more intriguing title?

What I meant by final day is final day operating. Chances are she won't run ever again under her own power on those tracks and she really isn't on the railroad in the traditional sense if she's sitting in Brightside dead. I helped tarp her for the winter and we did a good job putting her to bed. Hopefully soon she will move but you are correct that at the present time no one knows where we are moving to and when we are moving.

I was on crew that weekend, I am on the rear as she backs out of her spot and on the front of 2101 (the gray car) pulling into Sunol. On each east run we stopped east of Farwell bridge and did a run by too, I have seen this done for years but it is still a site to see. We make it sound like she's doing 80mph (still certified for it too) but we are only doing 20mph, notice the #'s on the silver cars are 2473 and 2474 and yes at one time SP had 2 units with these #'s 2 P-8 's and these cars.

Very nice video! Looks like you were standing 50 feet away from me almost the entire day. Also, the horn is a 1956 ex-Frisco S5T. I was one of the people who helped mount it in the yard.

+AlwaysTrainsHD Thank you for the correction. I wasn't quite sure on the horn when I made the video but it was close. If I remember correctly we talked to you briefly at Farmers Crossing when 3194 was coming down the canyon on the second run. I had to come back to the station during the photo runby time when we couldn't catch the time so I could help park cars and then my friend finished off the run railfanning. Parking cars wasn't glorious but with a cab ride as a reward it was worth every second!

The GGRM signed an agreement with the NCRA/NWP to move to Schellville. Not much is known yet other than that.

She is! The GGRRM has already moved some of its equipment there, and when the new GGRRM is open there is a lot of hope that 2472 will run again!

Rumor has it they will be moving to Santa Cruz, near the wye downtown. Some tracks and switches have been seen around the Westside of town and there have been two City Council meeting so far with mostly approval for the move, but no final decision. I live not too far from the tracks on the Westside and we were used to 5 trains a week during the SP and the UP days before the cement plant in Davenport was closed. The County just replaced on rail bridge in La Selva Beach, so hopefully it works out...

The last I read is the GGRM will be moving to the Santa Cruz wye. UP has agreed to transport the rolling stock.

+Jim McGowan +Jim McGowan That is actually misinformation. I work with the organization on the move project almost every weekend. UP has not agreed to move the equipment. Currently we have hired contractors that will come out starting next week to help us get the equipment ready to move on a class one railroad. There is no lease agreement at the present time with Santa Cruz, though we are working on that, and there is no formal agreement with UP. There is a lot of paperwork and many inspections that need to be complete before we move. But rest assured we will move somewhere, given the right time and where we go has still yet to be decided.

+Treefrogflag Productions I understand that negotiations are on going with Santa Cruz and nothing has been signed and won't be with Santa Cruz or UP for a while, as things take a long time these days with all the lawyers and politicians involved. What other alternatives that I haven't heard of, have gotten this far into the negotiations. I'm just an interested observer who is currently at my house in Thailand but I have a house on the Westside of Santa Cuz too and grew up with an almost daily train going by. Miss the old SP!

Hopefully soon we will have the SP running past your house again. The problem was that it was gonna go there. But, City officials said no. Why? Because they didn't want to pay the insurance money and they said that the locomotive would potentially frighten on the beach because the tracks run right through the middle of the road...

It is being moved to a new location in Northern CA. However that has been in progress for quite a while now. Who knows what'll happen at this point.

+RailsofMichigan Sorry for the late response. The Golden Gate Railroad Museum (GGRM) who operates SP 2472 will be moving to a new home within the next year. GGRM no longer holds an operating permit on the Niles Canyon Railway and they have 1 year to move to a new home. No final decision has been made about where we are moving, but as a working member of GGRM, rest assured 2472 will be kept safe and will be able to run on the rails under steam. The Pacific Locomotive Association (PLA) will continue to operate on the Niles Canyon Railway.

Niles Canyon Railway still has steam. 2472 is part of the Golden Gate Railroad Museum collection and it will be leaving NCRY quite soon. Or so that's the plan.
