Great video. I have to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making these videos. Your method inspired my own success when everyone around me was telling me I’d need twice the time I was proposing. I started training on March 11, two weeks ago on Nov 4 I was granted my Commercial Pilot Instrument ASEL temp cert. CFI and multi expected by end of year. Not nearly as fast as you, but it has been a fine pace and I’ve felt like I’ve had the time to explore offshoots such as diving into Advisory Circulars, nitpicking the FAR/AIM, and exploring accident case studies. I have also do quite a bit of home simming on the Pilot Edge network which has helped tremendously. You are an absolute beast for the pace you have set. It’s the benchmark! A note on Southwest is that the hiring they did do later this year is purely Destination 225 cadets they are getting through (and that program has been closed for years). They closed actual hiring mid-summer, and it's not going to open back up until 2026 at the earliest. Almost all of their issues are Boeing and the Max 7 not being certified.

The problem my friend is worse than you describe. There is a shortage of parts for A320 & B787 engine overhaul. Latin american and america/canadian airlines are no different to the rest of the world. Taxes are huge in Canada, forget going there to work, not to mention an absurd housing shortage and out of control inflation.

@handyherman777716 күн бұрын
@ Trent. For the lates situation update about Canada, just search on you tube and there are half a dozen really good videos on why Canada is failing and has deteriorated in leaps and bounds. As for the shortage of engine parts, I fly for a flag carrier that wants to grow it’s heavy fleet but instead is stuck with grounding 2 B787 next year due to OH shops not having spare components on the shelves. This is not on the web, it is right out of many meetings with engine parts suppliers and several engine OH shops in USA and abroad. Plus the shortage of qualified Techs to work at these shops has greatly diminished after pandemic. The older guys either retired or passed due to Covid, and not enough young guys are showing up at the door with resumes in hand willing to earn upwards of $60 an hour to start. Lets see how Trump wont fix this either. There is plenty skilled labour for this in Latin America, but USCIS doesn’t care either…

Trent, as someone extremely interested in jumping into the airline industry from financial forecasting, i really appreciate the reporting and supporting evidence of the current hiring situation. My one question that i have though is how does the flight school pipeline look feeding these airlines? You mentioned they're bursting at the seams. Are there any reports out there that quantify the number of pilots in training that would indicate how much supply is being increased that will flow into these upcoming positions? Just trying to gauge whether or not the industry will experience the bull-whip theory and if current trainees (supply) will satisfy upcoming positions (demand) before i jump from a career in finance to living my dream of aviation. I would appreciate your thoughts.
@trent_dyrsmid12 күн бұрын
Doug…. my evidence is anecdotal at best, but here’s what I know. From speaking with a few Flight School owners their business is definitely down. This doesn’t really come as a surprise because as soon as hiring slows, it would be a natural consequence that enrollments would slow down as well. I would encourage you to do your own research to get a feel for this. If you want hard data, use Google to direct you to the data on number of student pilot certificates issued by the FAA. Unfortunately, the newest of this data is from 2023 so it will be of limited value.
@douglasguptill502812 күн бұрын
Thanks, @trent_dyrsmid! I truly appreciate your insight on this and the additional guidance. That's a great idea about checking how many certificates have been issued. Like you mentioned, the data will have a significant lag but depending on the data available I can compare and contrast year-over-year changes in issuance. Perhaps highlighting a decent trend. Thanks for your thoughts, I love the channel and your interaction. Godspeed!

Newly christened CFI here. Really like all the facts and statistics. However, “pilot shortage” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it like back in 2021 when new hires were going from right seat at regional, to right seat for a major, within 12-24 months. I think the airbus and Boeing issues are definitely the most prevalent issues for the current hiring landscape. With this being noted, there are still A TON of flight schools with 1500+ hour CFI’s right now. Making it very difficult for me to find a job as a new CFI. This is vastly due to the ‘21-‘22 hiring boom and the fact that a lot of those people are still taking up a lot of space as FO’s. Good video, but the term “pilot shortage” struck me as a bit click baity given how much things have changed in the last few years.

Yes, and I say that because eventually Boeing will sort out its problems and deliveries will resume and when deliveries resume, Pilot hiring will also resume.

I’ve heard a lot of different things mainly second hand horror stories from pilots who only have ever flown domestically. Please paste the link to the documents. Thanks! Not sure why this vid qualifies as an update. Great data regarding hiring and market analysis. But industry experts have been providing the same primary reason for lack of hiring for months. Boeing and Airbus (for the most part). The public knows travel demand is high and the airlines won’t be able to keep up until the majors properly recover. And the Renton strike is over as of last week (when was this video made?). The focus, as of today, is Boeing laying off approximately 10% of its workforce post holiday which will further exasperate airliner supply into 2025. Sorry to be a downer, but the title jives with clickbait as opposed to “update.”
