This kind of thing is in Chad's wheelhouse. I remember going to a show years ago, and they opened by just having a mini jam session before breaking into their planned set list. It's just wild how talented he is.

The first time I saw this clip, I was bowled over by his talent to listen to a small amount of the song and he was able to just jump in and sound so close to the original. Thank you for uploading this with your reaction.

I totally agree, Chad Smith is a true MASTER of his craft. It's truly a gift to see a master performing his craft at the very top!

he didnt even need a listen thru, he just rolled with it on the first take. its absolutely mind blowing coming from a music background. he's a lead instrument, playing from cues and instrumental tone and volume its absolutely insane.

I’ve watched a bunch of reaction videos and I really love seeing a jazz musician weigh in. Some of the other content creators said Chad is capping saying he doesn’t know the song but I think true jazz musicians understand improvisation and how you CAN do it but you must LISTEN ❤
@JTidiotboy Жыл бұрын
Dude that drives me crazy. Like, I get why someone might think he already knew the song but he really is just that good. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have one of the best rhythm sections in rock music history. You don't play in a band with Flea for over 30 years without learning how to improvise.

@@JTidiotboy 💥 facts. Flea has to be one of the hardest musicians to follow. Even John Freshiante just said in an interview “I feel like every song is a bass solo and I’m just filling gaps”. And he’s a frigging legend on lead.
@UnXplainable1 Жыл бұрын
@@JTidiotboyAbsolutely agree. The other thing is that Chad’s take being similar to the original tells me Shannon gave the song exactly what it needed when he wrote the original part. It’s what you’re always trying to do as a drummer, so for someone like Chad to improvise something that’s so close to the original is a massive endorsement of Shannon’s writing to me.

Drumeo’s series of drummers doing this is so worth watching all of. Larnell Lewis takes on “Enter Sandman,” the drummer from Megadeth put together a super cool version of “Mr. Brightside.” There are a bunch of these on the channel that will leave your jaw on the floor. Chad’s the only one so far, though, that didn’t give the song at least one listen before jumping in. He set the bar high.
@marquisdelafayette1929 Жыл бұрын
Second this. Larnell just listening and describing the motions in the beginning is even more impressive than playing. At first you can tell he’s definitely out of his element but after a minute he gets into it and just starts jamming. Plus, dude is so humble.
@UnXplainable1 Жыл бұрын
@@marquisdelafayette1929 you just described my favorite part of that one. When he settles into it somewhere between the second verse and chorus, you can see it in his face and then his body loosens up. And when that dude is into it, whatever the song is, look the hell out. He’s truly one of the greats.

What normally happens is that the guest drummer listens to the song through once, makes notes, time signature, structure etc. Then he takes a pass at laying down the drums how he sees fit. Chad listened to 32 seconds of a drum-less track he never heard before and put down what I think is a superior drum line, no offense intended to Shannon, who is a sick drummer in his own right. I bet Shannon incorporates a few of the fills Chad came up with next time he plays the song.

@td6460 Жыл бұрын
After about 30 seconds of 30 Seconds to Mars, Chad immediately picks up the vibe and feel of this track and jumps in on it with absolute authoritative confidence. What I mean is, it's as if he wrote the damn song. Once he starts, he just full sends it. No retreat, no steps back, no hesitation even in the slightest. He perfectly anticipates the whole flow of the song from I suppose the bass line swell and it's amazing. What a maestro of his craft. Guess 40 years of doing something does that to you. It's truly one of the most incredible things anyone can witness in music, this man is so underrated.

It reminds me of the vocal cadences in hip hop. The vocals are a separate percussion instrument that add to the mood of the piece. In rock the drums drive the rhythm and set the pace for the guitar and vocals which are usually the melody. A good example of that is any Eminem track. He uses his cadences to add to the beat and drive the rhythm. Amazing.
