I think I've figured out why the object at the end of the Trial of Ordeals is a rat's tail. Think of it this way; unless you fought through that castle and found that tail at the end, who in their right mind would ever think to give the dragon king the tail of a rat as proof of their courage? It's such an inane and unimpressive object, only someone who actually did the trial would present it to him.

Also, one of the dragons mentions that the object changes depending on who finds it. Due to the tests being made by dragons for dragons, it's possible humans see it has something unimpressive, likely to leave it behind has humans can't even take it to the dragon king, leaving it to a dragon who can actually do so. As such, the Warrior of Light doing so is a VERY strong representation of courage.

Fun fact: in third grade our teacher made us read for 30 minutes a day after recess. They let us bring in books - and I brought in the FF1 instruction manual and reread it for about 2 months straight in hopes to figure out how to beat the game like my dad did -- also -- Final Fantasy 1 is a lot easier once you can read. Who knew?

Actually that is an interesting point, in most Japanese manga/anime/light novels the protagonists tend to be in their teens. So you saying they got older and wiser doesn't sound too far fetched. Peeb, Jerd, Ian and Joof were all teens when they set out on their journey when fate demanded it and with all the distance traveled and monsters slain they have been on this journey for years and now they are adults all seasoned warriors. Many would ask why they undertook such a journey at such a young age compared to many warriors older and more experienced than them. But in the words of Optimus Prime.. "Fate rarely calls upon us at a time of our choosing"

20:00 The rat's tail in FF4 is actually given to a gnome on a random island in exchange for adamantite which you can give to a Dwarven Blacksmith to get Excalibur, so partially right lol. Bahamut is in the game as well though just unrelated to the rat's tail.

You can do the castle of ordeals before the ice cave, which helps in the ice cave with the zeus gloves. Then you can do both of those and class change before touching the volcano.

Yeah, FFT is actually super broken when you get to the late game/have the hero characters, which is the same thing the original FF3 (Famicom) game suffered from, as well. FFV suffers from this _somewhat_ but not nearly as much as 3 where certain classes are basically useless.

Oh, I agree, I think the design of late-game classes was intentional in the case of Tactics. I just don't think it's "perfectly balanced", because, well, it isn't heh. It has a fluid progression path, sure, but that doesn't mean every class is balanced.

I think I ended up doing the Cave of Ordeals before going to the Volcano and Meeting Bahamut so I was super- confused what a Rat's Tail would be good for and thought that it was a joke reward for finishing an optional dungeon. Imagine my surprise getting to Bahamut and having him congratulate and reward me for holding onto the detached tail for a plague-ridden rodent.

Glad to see the class change went fairly smoothly! It is at this point that one should consider getting rid of any and all equipment you have no use for or helps very little. Particularly armour, since you have limited slots and really good stuff to buy/find in near future. So things like caps and gloves are basically useless now, as they give next to no defense for the amount of damage you are going to take. Regarding armour, make especially sure to have a slot open for everyone for one item you can buy at any time now and not bother with the Anti-Rub spell.

Rat's tail in FF4 was actually used to get adamant ore from a miner at that small town, and then you'd have to take the adamant ore to a blacksmith in the underworld to get Excalibur. Bahamut was only a summon in FF4. Also, if you gave that same miner the rare Pink Tail, you'd get a super secret piece of armor.

Someone's probably already mentioned, but the Rat Tail in FF4 didn't have any connection to Bahamut. You gave it to a tail collector south of Silveria who gave you adamant ore in exchange. But you were right that it eventually leads to getting Excalibur.

Jerd the the rogue, once known as "the guy with blue hair" of the group, has now become a ninja, capable of actually dealing damage and spellcasting. He no longer shows his hair in public in an attempt to cast away that horrid reputation of being "the guy with blue hair" of the bunch. Only those who have believed in and helped the heroes from the start of their journey will know of jerd's blue hair. Now, it is only a legend, stories told to little children that even people who can't do shit can better themselves. (they leave the part out about bahomet of course.)

Hey Jared i'd hate to correct you but you give the rat's tail to a miner who gives you a piece of adamant and you take that to a blacksmith who forges the legend sword into Excalibur. And even then in the final tower there's a room you have a rare chance to fight pink puffs who have a rare chance to drop a pink tail that you can again trade to the miner for ANOTHER piece of adamant and then have the blacksmith forge you the adamant armor. Bahamat is just on the moon and you fight him to make it so Rydia can call him.

To be clear the Ninja CAN wear most armour and shields now (meaning that frost shield selling was a bad idea). Additionally he can use the Ice Sword now! He can also equip the Flame Armour which you missed in the volcano in case you want to go back for that; I think it's the best armour he can use.

It's interesting that you mention not wanting to level up too much before the class change because of the better stat progression the upgraded classes get. Level 16 is actually the exact level you want to get the class change by, because it maximises spellcasting progression for the Knight and Ninja

As much as I love this game, I have to admit I had more fun playing the GBA remake where all of the 8 million bugs are fixed. I just wish that version had kept the D&D style "X casts per level" rather than switch to MP.

So I've been noticing something about attacking spells. They seem to sometimes not work as well against enemies who logically would be weak to them, but then one of the targets takes a bunch of damage that's roughly double what the others took. So since you mentioned this game is inspired by DnD, is it possible your spells sometimes don't help because of a "roll for half damage" mechanic?

That's kind of the case, but really the spells, depending on which ones they are, have a roll to hit or miss, if it misses, it only does one set of damage numbers, if it hits, it rolls twice. If the enemy is weak to it it doubles the damage, If I recall correctly.

In the original, yes, but the remakes use a system of "Damage ranges," or the spell will deal within x-y damage, unless an enemy is weak or resistant to the attack.

20:19 If you're referring to America's FF2 (I believe that was FF4 in reality), then completing Bahamut's side quest also includes defeating him as a boss, and if you succeed, your beast summoner girl gets to use him as a Summon, and he is THE most powerful of them all. The fight though is extremely easy if you're at least lv 50 because he gives you a countdown from 5 to 0 and when he hits zero, he unleashes his attack, but if you even slightly strategize, you'll kill him by around d 2 or 1. However, the real challenge was the quest and he is worth getting as a Summon.

ARUB actually does work. It even does more than you'd think. Not only does it protect from Death elemental attacks, but also from Earth and Status type attacks. Granted, very few things actually use "status" type attacks (even when it comes to attacks that cause status, due to a bug), but it does help you resist stuff like the few enemies who can cast Mute and a few other niche things. Doesn't protect you from Poison or Time element KO spells, though... Though barley any Poison effects are actually Poison element (see that previous bug), but the real issue with ARUB is that, uh, Ribbons man. Ribbons. That said, its resistance boosts cover some areas that nothing *except* Ribbons and Wall cover so it's not actually that bad. Though yeah, the ProRing and White Shirt actually protect against Death, so if you have ProRings/Ribbons on everyone you don't need the Death defense, but still.
