I have also had discussions with other genealogical researchers of our Italian ancestry (in my case Province of Torino, Piemonte) in reference to surnames [cognomi] having these same qualities of masculine, feminine and plural. Just one example is my direct line surname ENRIETTO. But sometimes in documents referring to the same family it is ENRIETTI and sometimes it is ENRIETTA. There are more examples but this is just one. And taking the Beginner Course From Zero to Italian made it possible for me to make these connections.

@@indriboentaran1196 But I still have not figured out some of the surnames (of others' ancestors not mine) that have the soprannome with them and sometimes they have more than one soprannome. And those are very strange. Some of the words don't even look like a surname at all. The only "different" name we have is Fenoglio Gaddò. And that IS the surname. Two words together but separately Fenoglio is a different surname and Gaddò is a different surname.

@@whychromosomesmusic5766 It sometimes happens that the parents decide to give both their surnames to the baby, it's legal, but not common though. Magari la mamma faceva di cognome Fenoglio e il papà Gaddò, who knows :)

@@silviacocchi5 I know it is all the way back to the Latin records in Prascorsano in 1823 as Fengolio Gaddò sometimes with a "detto Guai" possibly as a soprannome that was not used very much? Records for Prascorsano prior to 1823 are not available online so prior to that I have no way of knowing WHEN that change occurred. I know in English noble houses when a younger son who did not inherit a title or property married a woman whose father had property or a title then he might either take his father in law's surname as his own or sometimes combine them as a double surname. I would wonder if the same thing might have happened in the past with Fenoglio Gaddò and other double surnames in Italy not to be confused with the soprannome which I have read were created to distinguish different families with the same surname such as Pomatto Parata in Pertusio which later dropped the "Parata" soprannome. I would suspect (just guessing) maybe there was a priest in that Pomatto family as opposed to the Pomatto family that did not have a priest also living in Pertusio? I have seen records of some comuni in the same Canavese region of surnames in the past with up to three or even four parts of the entire surname. I would suspect some of those were probably soprannomi that were probably dropped later on.

@@whychromosomesmusic5766 wow! i see you did a great research there! it's amazing! In regards to your "Pomatto Parata in Pertusio" question, i can try to answer using my experience and what it evokes to me this particular construction with the "in" in between. When we italians marry, the wife never replaces her surname with the husband's one. However the union is legally there so to be recognizable in formal documents or important occasions we tend to say the surname of the wife followed by "in" and then the surname of the husband. Eg. my grandmother went by Rustichelli for all her life, even after marrying my grandpa Franco Cocchi. However when she died we had to write "Maria Rustichelli in Cocchi" in the epitaph of her tomb to clarify that they were married in this pretty definitive context. I hope i explained myself decently and didn't completely miss the point of your question.

I also studied French. Star referring to a celebrity is "la star" in French. L'étoile is a feminine word meaning star. I can see the parallels of Italian with French and Spanish.

No, we don't have the plural ending in "s". Even English words become common in Italian don't change and don't add "s".
