Hey guys, big fan. I work on a nuclear submarine. We don't have a string that measures the hull contraction, but the hull does creak and pop when we dive deep. The string bit is from a movie called Down Periscope and sometimes we do it for VIPs because they expect it. Speaking of VIPs, it isn't really that hard to get a ride on a submarine, if you said you were going to put out a video about it and let the gov edit your footage (to get rid of classified stuff and make sure it portrays them positively) they would probably do it, since they often need recruits. I wouldn't though. It is pretty boring. Imagine spending 6-9 months on a 100m boat working 7 days a week for ~8+ hours a day and, when you are not on watch, doing constant maintenance and cleaning. You wouldn't be able to see anything even if you did have a window since it is too dark after about 150m. Submarining is the kind of thing that sounds cool when you tell stories, but it is hard to express how mind numbingly repetitive the life is. It is like a shitty time machine, time passes, and all your days blur into one long tiring day. You have no idea what is going on in the outside world and when you come back, everyone is talking about things you've never heard of like you have been frozen in ice.

I'm curious about the psychology of why we enjoy hearing the same dumb stuff again, but actually, I think I'd rather hear them speculate wildly about it on this podcast, with absolutely no facts consulted.

I love that the leap in logic was "James Cameron didn't like tea breaks during shooting" where they even included a reason why tea-breaks were specifically delaying the production more than just the length of a tea break... And the thought as to why this was? Because James Cameron believes they should work 7 days a week, all day, no breaks. (I should note that I'm not being sarcastic. I really do love that.)

Sips talking about Gomorra as a crime thriller series makes me feel bad. It's obviously fiction, but it's written by a whistleblower that's been under witness protection for decades and is very grounded in reality. The Mafia is still to this day a very real issue in italy, and i hope nobody in the future is going to romanticize it and make it seem like a good thing.

Das Boot had multiple very successful releases during die 1980s, first of all a cinematic release at around 2 hours. Afterwards there was a multi part tv series with the same footage from the cinema movie version but vastly expanded upon the storyline in terms of details, while telling the same story. This series reached over 300min runtime in total. Eventually they released a directors cut in the late 1990s which was about 200min runtime. It's a little messy in hindsight, but you really want to watch the 1985 tv series version in my opinion.

Sips' dream wasn't really a dream. It's the state where you go from dreaming to consciousness and parts of your body start processing while others not yet and your brain tries to explain it with an imagination. It's simply because certain motor neurons don't receive signals while you're in a deep sleep. When you get stuck in a place like that in your dream it's because your body is under your covers and you feel restricted to movement but other senses aren't online to explain why. A similar manifestation that happens much more often is when you are imagining a story where you can walk but you can't run because in real life your legs are trapped under your covers. Or likewise when you are imagining that you're trying to yell but for some reason it's not working, well you can't because the motor neurons for your vocal cords and tongue are also disabled during deep sleep. It's ofc true that during sleep, your brain processes things that happened during the day but that's not something that happens with a visualisation. If you're experiencing dreams, it's mostly from entering and exiting deep sleep where your brain tries to find an explanation of what's happening without having all the data. It tries to fill in the blanks. And don't look up: a comedy about the subjectification and politicisation of science.

Interesting! Any time I've tried to scream in a dream, the way it gets interpreted inside the dream is that I'm trying to scream at a higher pitch than I'm actually capable of reaching, similar to trying to sing too high. And when I can't walk in a dream, I think at the time that it's because I don't have the mental energy to make myself stand all the way up. I'd always assumed it had to do with being worn out by stress. Sometimes I end up walking on one foot and one knee, though. No idea how I pull that off.

Hypervitaminosis A. Arctic bear and seal liver contain upwards of 15,000IU of Vitamin A per GRAM of liver tissue. Eating a small portion of this meat would dose a person with the equivalent of a month's worth of heavy Vitamin A supplement. The symptoms are... unpleasant. Like full-body hair loss and skin peeling, internal hemorrhaging, death from hemophilia unpleasant.

So an elevator that has a hallway to the apartment would allow an intruder to enter the hallway and spend time breaking into the flat- needing a code to go to specific floor and entering the flat directly surely works better for security because of this?

Ive finished the series of 4 "main" Dune books and MAN, what a letdown. Only 2 of them contain what can be described as a story (Dune and Children of Dune): characters, plot, plausible threat to the characters, a goal for protagonist and antagonist... The first book was great and Im looking forward to part 2 of the movie but I have no idea how they wanna do Messiah, if they choose to make a 3rd film [spoilers after this]: In Messiah, it's just Paul being an all powerful being, knowing all and the threat is extremely minor which you find out quickly. It's just a meandering (albeit short) mess to get to Paul's self sacrifice (supposedly) and to explore the weirdness that are his sister and children - both concepts of children being adults in all ways but physical wouldnt work in 2023+ cinemas I wager (the kids know they'll be expected to have incest babies... maybe not mainstream eh). Anyhow, that whole book was a boring shit-show with no stakes. Then Children fixes things, it's a bit of a repeat of book 1 but with the weird Atreides twins. Their whole golden path stuff, mixed with knowing future but leaving randomness is an interesting concept and well, there's a villain, there are stakes and yeah, Paul's SON (not Paul himself) gives himself sandworm baby living armor with the understanding he will grow into a sandworm hybrid eventually. Then, after this decent (though weird) 3rd book, bloody God Emperor just goes into a boring (very long) snore fest with pretentious pseudo philosophical dialogue and 0 surprises... yeah, ofc the sandworm emperor will eventually "die" or move on or whatever to let the human race exist alone again, on a path he has chosen for them, having bread his perfect Atreides line... Utterly pointless to finish that series. Read book 1, dont go beyond it. Maybe read a summary of Messiah and then go to Children, that's alright but skip God Emperor.

around 5:09 when they are talking about dreams and memory, Pyrion says "none of them mean anything", perhaps he was joking. I don't know why he thinks this but dreams most definitely usually do "mean" something. Psychologists and other similar fields can get alot of information from dreams and many books and research has been done on dreams, what they are for, etc. Most commonly dreams are a visual representation to the individual of your brain actively working through problems in your life by playing through scenarios in the attempt to gain some truth or comfort or something like that.
