It's sad that people forget the Korean war. My great uncle (my maternal grandfather's brother) was drafted into it when he was barely like 20 years old. The story we always heard was that he had been blown up by a grenade, and his body wasn't recovered. Well in the 90's, after my grandfather had died, the government contacted us to say that documents had been recovered (in fact, had been sitting in a filing cabinet for decades and essentially forgotten, as the government had basically wanted everyone to do about that war, apparently) and they found that he had not died when previously assumed. A man had kept a list of P.O.W.s in a roll of toothpaste, at great personal risk (he had apparently been beaten himself for such things previously), and my great uncle's name and serial number and stuff was on that list. He was captured during an ambush and forced on the Tiger Death March (a long walk of prisoners across North Korea, in the winter, where many were executed along the way for random reasons by a maniacal Korean general known as "The Tiger"), eventually ending up in this prison camp. He wasn't listed as having died of wounds or anything, however, which implies that he died being executed in some manner. Keep in mind that my grandfather on that side of the family came from a large family of boys. Tall, Tennessee country boys, who didn't take shit, if my grandfather was any indication (he himself served in WW2). I would like to think that my great uncle gave one of those North Koreans a fat lip, maybe taking up for some other guy, and they killed him for it. I'm just glad my grandfather never knew the truth, because a quick unexpected death, rather than a prolonged and miserable captivity, is probably easier to swallow. Unfortunately, due to how DNA works, we don't know of a living relative who can offer a sample to make a match. So there still isn't a proper grave for him. All we know of is a memorial to M.I.A.s in Hawaii. I'm posting his story here, or anywhere that such topics come up, because we shouldn't forget such wars (or the people lost in them) just because it embarrasses the American government. I researched this entire thing thoroughly after I found out, because my great uncle at least deserves that much. I may be the only relative who has ever explored his fate.

So, I grew up a Jehovahs Witness, never baptised because its by choice when your old enough. Lewis is exactly right, it is vulnerable people who buy into it. My grandad (mothers dad) used to be a violent smoker, and my grandma (mothers mum) was approached by Jehovahs Witnesses (I think it was my Great Grandma on my dads side who met with her, but it was before my mother was born). She started having bible studies, went to the meetings, took her kids, and brought them up as Jehovahs Witnesses. Eventually, Grandad started going, and now he is the freindliest, most charismatic person there is, always used to bring bags of sweets to the meetings and hand them out to people (mainly for the kids but everyone got one), always helping people out with DIY and stuff. People who are vulnerable are the ones drawn in by it, but often for a good reason. Having a faith to occupy the worries we bog ourselves down with, a strict moral code, a community of freindly people. For some its exactly what they need. What I was always told growing up, was that one day Armageddon would come (not based on everybody hearing the word of God as one of the triangles said, just a time that God decides) and when it comes, the ones following Gods word are saved, and many will try to repent but it will be too late. Then the 144000 who have their place in heaven will go to heaven, and the rest who survived armageddon will be on a paradise earth. We actually had a really old lady in our meetings who was supposedly one of the 144000, and i think the criterea is that you commit yourself fully to Gods word, to the extent of leaving your family and all worldly possessions if the time came. As I learned about science I started to become cynical but having grown up as a Jehovahs Witness I can see why people need that in their lives. Jehovahs Witnesses are always smiley, but thats partly because they pride themselves on being good people, partly because they are happy because of their community and partly because they believe the work they are doing is bringing good to an otherwise satanic world.

Out of curiosity, has your experience put you off Christianity totally? (As in, would you still consider the possibility that Jesus existed, and look at what the Bible says, rather than Jehovah's witness teaching?) I think it's remarkable that after 2000 years, not a single piece of science has contradicted (Bible-based) Christianity, but Christians have come up with their own utterly nutty, non-Jesus stuff, such as the Catholic Church's Pope and purgatory. I presume there's quite a lot of this sort of thing amongst the Jehovah's witnesses, but I'm not familiar with what they teach.
@Liamneedham29
@Liamneedham29 6 жыл бұрын
Fluffy Camel Just knowing science made me sceptical about the existence of god. As it happens i do still believe in god (rather the possibility of the existence of a deity, even if just a part of the human psychology), and even when im unsure of what to make of some aspect of my life (feelings, desires, etc.) I pray. Its not religious for me, just a way to understand my thoughts better, and perhaps is why prayer and religions even exist - to give the human brain a way to visualise the concepts of the world they cannot grasp. I think christianity is a good thing. I think religions are a good thing. They have their problems when people cannot accept that belief is a personal thing, and shouldnt be an ideology beyond a community (shouldnt recruit the world to following, just let people hear and then make up their own minds about whether they want religion in their lives). I think jesus did exist. I think he probably was able to perform feats beyond what people understood, akin to magicians or rocket scientists. Jehovahs witnesses teach pretty much the same as christians except for there is no hell - just heaven for the 144000 and paradise for everyone who isnt deemed wicked beyond reproach (and that when armageddon comes even someone as evil as like hitler would have their chance to repent and it would be based on the condition of their heart). The wicked are just destroyed. They also teach that the trinity doesnt exist. God is the father, Jesus is the son and the Holy spirit is a seperate thing altogether. Like i say, i got cynical when i took an interest in science, but ive always held the view that human knowledge is limited and even our most basic understandings of the universe could at any point be disproven, so there is always the possibility that god could exist. We just cant know. Thats why its belief.

I cringed a lot when Lewis gave the assumption that christians think preaching is the best way to spread the word but most of the church has realised that no one likes to hear you on the street. That is why churches have started a different approach of walking with people instead. Lewis May need to work on his grouping a bit more to not make bad assumptions

I dislike all organized religions. but I have nothing against the people in them. The important dinstinction between organized religion and just spiritualism or paganism, is that organized religion has a power structure and is almost run like a company, Organized religions also have their hands in politics and are very prone to corruption because of all the influence they wield. They also awnser to no one. On the philosophical level I dislike them because they discourage freedom of tought. They claim to provide all the awnsers to your problems. And will also encourage you to externalize your problems, rather then trying to face them or improve yourself, as that is a much less attractive option, and organized religions generally want as many followers as possible. I also feel like they discourage personal growth or development. As rather than ponder the world and its many scientific mysteries. The truth is already there and its all been written for you. Dont worrie your pretty little head, just keep praying and it will all be ok. Anger outbursts? Why see a psychologist and learn about yourself, when you could just pray. Medical problems? Pray. Sex problems? SINNER WE BEAT YOU NOW. What im trying to say is that when you buy into such religions you take away a lot of your own "willpower" you are no longer guided by your own mind and your own instincts you are now a puppet in a puppet show. Any success is not yours. Failures? they are not your own either. Why thirst for knowledge or try and get the most out of your life, when there is an afterlife? This was more of a ramble then I had hoped. No offense if you are very religious, just dont forget to be critical and not take anything for granted always do your own research, take control of your own life, only you have you own best intentions at heart

Korea was more like a 4 parter. Part 1: North Korea attacks and the south is unprepared and gets pushed back almost to Pusan. Part 2: UN and NATO comes in and sends a shit ton of troops to aid the south and they manege to push the north back to the Chinese border. Part 3: China after finally kicking the Kuomintang's ass comes in and floods Korea with the PLA and push the UN past the 38th parallel. Part 4 UN sends more soldiers and it stabilizes where the DMZ is today and an armistice is signed.

Christian people don't look for God's favour, they look to be in relationship with God. The Bible doesn't say "you must go out and tell people about God". It isn't a biblical law 🤷🏼‍♂️ to be a Christian is to believe in jesus, we don't need to do anything to be i heaven, but if you really love God you want to be in relation with him, you want to tell people about how much he loves us. People that Preach fear mongering I don't agree with, to Preach out of fear of hell is wrong and isn't what the bible teaches

My uncle was 19 when he was drafted into the Air Force to fight in Vietnam. My dad was 10 at the time, and their father (who was wounded in Europe in WW2) had already died. Shortly after my uncle left, their mom died, forcing my dad to ride 600 miles on a bus from Indiana to Alabama to live with his aunt and their 3 sons. My uncle came back hopelessly addicted to any drugs or alcohol he could find, but managed to work at Whirlpool as an engineer for around 20 years. Just thought I'd share the story if anyone was interested.

On the topic of the Vietnam war, the U.S recruited local tribesmen; unaffiliated with the Vietnamese, to help fight in their war. With the promise that if the U.S would to lose this war, they were to find new homes for the tribesmen in their country or allies. When the U.S retreated many of the tribesmen were slaughtered, abandoned, and fled into Thailand as refugees.

I'd say things such as Mormonism (which IS a valid branch of Christianity) Latter Day Saints, Baptists, Protestants, Methodists, even Catholics are are sub sets of Christianity just like how Shia and Shi ite are different branches of Islam. Some of the beliefs are different and that's what distinguishes the different sub groups. Scientology is a cult, cults are religion based systematically. But Mormons aren't a cult and the term "Morman" certainly isn't a slur... I love this podcast

People come to your doors Bec Jesus wanted Christian's to spread the word of God which is basically "treat people well and be a good person" the afterlife of heaven was promised as a reward for being good in life. But it really shouldn't be used to fear monger people into conversion which is EXACTLY what Jesus stood against. The original teachings of Christ have been taken and changed over many years to what they are today. So you guys aren't wrong, Sips people do bait other into their religions to boost numbers and make themselves look good and get into heaven. But that's missing the whole point of being a good human being.

Pyrion! I am a relaxed, nondenominational Christian. I do not speak for all.. You assume that all religious people have the same driving force behind why they share their personal truth. What about those of us who take the bible- and other religious texts- as simply a guideline for the way we live? I share my truth, when prompted to do so, simply because I want to share the love and the joy it has brought me, not because I follow every damn word of this religious text like it's my goal to end all life on Earth.

That hour glass first one isn't actually terrible, its by no means the best, but Lewis really got caught up on the first couple of lines being mistyped\the writer not knowing how to start As a result he personally wrote-off the whole story, and then told it to Sips\Pyrion with none of the (somewhat important) grammar and implied feeling. It disappointed me that Lewis being unable to read the way the writer intended, also caused the other 2 to judge without reading themselves (and probably to in future avoid what can on occasion be a pretty good place to find interesting and inspired short stories.)

People like me who believe in Ultimate Reconciliation essentially that everyone will go to Heaven because they will meet God and who when given the opportunity to meet God would reject him. We proselytize not because of some vague reward of Heaven, but instead because our personal experience here on earth has been improved majorly by Christianity and Christ. Hell has been preached predominately by the church for far too long. There is so much more to Christianity than just the after life. We have genuine concern for people and desire to bring into their life a better way to live. This is my own personal belief but it might help to clear up why Christians proselytize that is not based in selfishness.

What about spirituality, theological understanding, religions that don't have an afterlife, i don't think there is an afterlife, I feel their isn't a human esque god, but I do think their pragmatically needs to be a superordinate structure: a logos. On top of that their is a deep psychological value to the collection of religious and spiritual study, see the esoteric studies then used by psychoanalysts, the value isn't fundamental but analogical.
