Triumph Tiger 800 (2014) engine shut down at idling speed

Fuel pump seemed to have primed normally, took off normally and as soon as I shut the accelerator engine would just die. Went back to normal after ignition OFF/ON with a key. Ignition button did not help. Been a week it has not occurred and been running fine.

Triumph needs to recall all the 2011 to 2014 bikes and do what they know is the right but they wont and now have changed 2015 and newer bikes to fix the problem that your seeing on this video they now have an electronic throttle like the 2011 to 2014 Triump trophy bikes had on them but triumph refuses to fix the 2011 to 2014 bikes with a recall and getting rid of the stepper motor and going to electronic throttle. They now are saying it is a maintenance issue that we are having but I have had it mess up with in 100's of miles after service by the triumph dealer due to riding in the dirt. This is not a maintenance issue it's not even in there manual listed as a maintenance issue that needs to be addressed every so miles. So to get you on the road and back riding this is a trick to force the stepper motor to go all the way out and then back to wipe it clean. Turn the ignition on let it do its normal thing with fuel pump just like you would do before you crank or press starter button but don't try to start it. Some do start it and force the bike to idle and then shut the bike off and this trick will still work if you do that. Now turn the ignition off then listen for a fax machine sound on the left side of the engine (clutch side of bike) as soon as you hear that fax sound grab the throttle and twist it to full throttle and then let off throttle that is all you have to do. This forces the stepper motor to go all the way out and back and must wipe the dust off it then usually the bike will Idle when started again. Now I ride a lot of dirt and have had the bike in the shop several times and they have replaced stepper motors and cleaned throttle body's but as soon as I start riding dirt again the problem happens again. Now every time I shut the engine off on my bike I just I listen for the fax machine sound and just do it every time. Triumph needs to recall all the 2011 to 2014 bikes and do what they know is the right thing like and they know it is a problem that is why the 2015 and newer bikes now have the electronic throttle put on them. Triumph before somebody gets killed or hurt and has this happen going into a intersection do what is right, if you read this do it now for our life's sake recall the bike or come out with a super cheap electronic throttle upgrade that we as owners can buy and put on ourselves. Just want to say you know who you are the Guy on the Dalton HWY in Canada that showed me this trick and my bike had less the 6000 miles on it thanks so much this trick allowed me to finish my trip to Alaska and beyond!

I just purchased mine second hand Triumph Tiger 2011 8.700 Miles at first I was amazed of the quality of the motorcycle until all of a sudden every time I made a full stop the motorcycle what shutting off it did that every single time I stop until one day it didn't want to start at all, then I started playing with the ODB II interface and the ECU software and it started after a couple months figuring out why such a nice bike just went dead from one day to another, right now the motorcycle is starting but as you said as soon as I pull the throttle it shuts off, Im in northern Michigan and the mechanics over here are afraid to even take a look on my motorcycle. :(

I have been tormented by this problem for a long time. I just tried it and it seems to work. The only solution I’ve found is to remove the tank and clean stepper motor, but I still don’t have time for that. +100 karma points for you :)

Dirty stepper motor. A notorious and dangerous issue with the earlier model 800s. It's the thing that sounds like a fax machine when you first turn on your ignition. That's the stepper motor moving the idle lever so that the engine can run at idle. If the stepper motor isn't moving the idle lever into position (dirt), the bike will not idle. This is especially a problem for the off-road (XC) models. I ride a 2013 XC off-road and this happens quite a bit.

I own a 2014 800xc and I am facing the same issue... my mechanic made a make shift sleeve for idle stepper motor and it is holding temporarily...however I''d have to replace the stepper motor... I dont think I can replace the stepper motor alone... i guess d have to replace the entire throttle body.. atleast thats what triumph india told me.

This happened to me on my 2013 model a few days ago. Limped home blipping the throttle and parked it up. Checked it last night and it started without issue and ran fine on a short test run. Stalling I can expect (still a fairly novice rider) but it's the inability to start properly and keep it going that's the kicker. I've seen some mention of mechanical workarounds which I might look into.

I had the same issue on a 2015 xrx turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor so the dealership said and they fixed it under the warranty no further problems since

Similar with my Speed Triple, checked ECU Tune and there's a display at the bottom by the download bar stating the - TPS is unsupported. I re-loaded the OEM Map and reset the TPS in accordance with the prompts given, still no joy. I suspect in my case that the TPS is failing at some point. Next step will be to check with a multi-meter and go from there.

Someone in the comments said it was the fuel pump. Which kinda sucks that you have to take out the whole gas tank...Who I'm I to talk anyway I have a 2007 ninja 250 that uses carbs....When something goes wrong in the carbs total hell happens.

Sorry, I had problems with my Dealer tool and was unable to finish the video. You will need some software to correctly set your idle as I believe that is the problem.

@@thesupermariu that was my reply. My wife was signed in. Yes, in Dealer Tool you can set the idle speed. Adjust the screw on the stepped motor to set it, then lock nut it. I think it is 2,000 rpm, although that sounds a bit high.

I have the same problem on my 2002 Speed Triple 955cc. Can be very scary when suddenly the motor cuts out and the back wheel locks up!

What stepper means in spanish? My 800xc 2011 sometimes does not start well(specially when is already warm) it does like trying to start lower the RPM and inmediately cranks the engine(all this happens whithin 2 sec) it is like a fake crank engine...

All you have to do is take a can of WD-40 and spray the galvanized looking little arms and springs up in the area that a carburetor would be and that will clean the stepper arms rods and springs and loosen up the dirt and I'll be fine after that I carry a can in my bag all the time a very small can that's compact

@@ANDY1985UK2011 to put a starter on one of those you take off the seat the gas tank the air filter the fuel injection system it's quite a job if you have mechanical experience it's still about a 5-hour job cuz it's down below all that stuff

And yes the stepper motors there also that's what you got to clean up once in a while otherwise it sticks when you pull in the clutch if it gets hung up

Hey..you are new or what? When an efi engine goes out like your its always better to turn OFF the main key pull OUT the key, wait (if its possible) 15 seconds and then do it like you always do. NEVER on efi engines try up to 3 times before you do reset again. Good luck
