Happy to compare this to my Prophesy Extura for anyone who's looking at both. 24 fret access is completely comfortable. I find the fishmans to be solid performers but a tad less organic than a Gibson Burstbucker in their classic mode. Its a skinnier neck more like an Ibanez and I tend to like my 60's slim tapers wider like I have on my Firebird. So this is more of the a big man's guitar and the Extura fits smaller people. Trogly thinks this feels long because he's not used to Explorer bodies. They're big and they sit a little forward naturally so they pair better with long limbed players.

Regardless of what some people think Epiphone is getting on their game. I've got an Epiphone Les Paul Traditional Pro III goldtop and it's a great guitar. I was considering an ESP EC256 but I went with the Epiphone because of the split coil design. Like this Explorer they're independent of each other. I LOVE IT. The color (on my screen) is coming off as a gun-metal gray. The binding is awesome and really highlights it. I like the hardware too. It certainly would stifle the snobs who'd say Epiphones are inherently cheaply built guitars....not so with a Floyd Rose. The clean tones, although not fitting with the guitars aesthetics, are really choice. It's versatile in the sound dept. In my head, I could totally see Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick coming out and belting through a lot of one of their sets with this. And the price point is fantastic, especially for the quality contained.

Sure, you could re-wire the existing pots, but really, there's room in the 3-way switch cavity that you could slap a tone knob up there. It'd be a rather tricky bit of soldering and might be a tad weird to have a knob over there. However, it'd make the guitar visually stand out even more.

I'm liking the ghost horse more than the thunder horse. Only thing missing is a tone control. I like to roll my tones back a little off full depending on what I'm playing. The other explorer you compared it to seemed to have a slightly different horn where the toggle switch is. As far as the horn I think it couldve been narrowed by the neck. But I think Brendan plays some over hand so likely that horn isn't an issue for him. Floyd rose trims I find are so much better than any other. Once you do a set up they are such a joy to use.

Did the springs for the bridge come from the factory that way? You don't set the springs that way, it makes the middle spring moot as the two outside springs are stretched longer. Not impressed at all.
@dennisapplegate75533 жыл бұрын
Most people that hate Floyd Rose's have that opinion because of poor / wrong set ups a properly set up Floyd is a dream . A improperly set up one is a nightmare. Nature of the beast. When you angle the two outside springs. It basically makes them progressive the two out ones provide a softer touch until you go further then the middle one begins to act as a progressive resistance. It is the way Jeff Beck sets them up and you can't really argue with that. He said it give a more sensitive feel and response .And it reacts to the slightest touch early and you still a strong resistance when you hammer it.. He should know. Right?
@SionynJones3 жыл бұрын
Yes both two I've had which had finish flaws had springs like this.
@ChuckNicholsonTRM3 жыл бұрын
Well, it definitely doesn't make the middle spring "moot". The middle spring has less tension on it and exerts less pull, sure. It's still pulling though. One can fine tune the resistance on the trem by adjusting spring angles like that. I'm not saying that's what was done here, but it's not "wrong", per se.
@amandahuginkiss68683 жыл бұрын
@@ChuckNicholsonTRM Agreed, different string gauges might require more tension in a particular side of the bridge. Hybrid string sets. I've added springs to my Floyd Rose setup in order to tune down to D, or what have you. When someone says "You have to have it set up like this" I become suspicious.

The neck feels great (1 1/16th nut width, 24.75 scale length); I think it's a standard C. However, because the body is very radical and large, it's cumbersome in small spaces, such as in front of a computer desk or small stage. My taste has changed since buying this guitar, so personally, I would skip buying another because it's awkward. Metalocalypse and Brendon influenced my decision to buy it, actually. I don't regret the purchase at all, I'm just in a different place in my guitar playing journey.

The bridge pickup is closer to the bridge on the production model than the one in the promo shot. And I don't believe that Epiphone uses genuine Honduran mahogany. And remember if it's not genuine mahogany then it's some cheaper substitute. I get that for an Explorer spec'd out like this that $800 isn't a lot, but it's still price creep for Epiphone guitars. After a long wait, mine has finally arrived. So here is my take. On first inspection, it looked real nice. Have not found any issues with any of the cosmetics, so thats cool. The action was way high up, so i lowered the Floyd, but could not get it low enough to my preference before it bottomed out. O.K. It should be fine after I set it back up. So, as with all guitars a buy, I did a full tear down of the body, pickups, bridge, etc, and found some not so great issues with the neck, and frets. It does have quite a few frets that need to be trimmed, so my hands do not get shredded while playing, but there one major issue is on the 14th fret. It appears as though they had a problem setting the fret itself, and they used some kind of filler to cover up the damage done to the fret board. The problem is, the filler the used is white, and then I noticed a lot of tiny white specks all over the fret board, as if they filled a lot of imperfections. Now, it is not noticeable unless you take a close look, but the fret "repair" is a little more obvious, but still isnt a sore thumb. The neck is very back bowed, and I am putting 9's on it, so it should come back easily. I am an ebony fret board guy, just love black fret boards, but I have seen rosewood darker than this. Oh yeah, the little symbol thing on the 12th fret, is actually a little "lumpy". So after all the critiques, I still love it. Is it an $800 guitar? By a long shot, yes.

@@SionynJones What was your issue? I finished all most of the work on it last night. Put EMGs in it, had to tap the bridge pin sleeves a little deeper to get my action where i want it, without bottoming the floyd out. I only use my bridge pickup, so when i gutted the p/u, and pots, i left the selector switch in, unwired, and made some long wires so i could put the battery in with the switch. tuned it, played for about an hour, and was happy. Still need to restring it, adjust the truss rod, and set the intonation, but it plays really good already. Since it came with real, tapped Gibson Burstbuckers, I should be able to get at least $150 out of them, so my pickups paid for themselves.

The Explorer got it's bad boy reputation 15-20 years after it was introduced. Gibson in 1958 was not designing a guitar for high gain chugging and shredding. So, it should be versatile, especially with Gibson pickups. I think it looks fantastic. If it weren't for the missing tone knob, I'd sell the Epi Explorer I recently bought and get this one. At 899USD, the new Epi Lifeson sounds like it is STACKED with features and tones, totally befitting Lifeson's sonic style throughout the years - onboard piezo, Floyd, Access Heel, stereo output, coil splitting. Honestly, sounds like the perfect LP style axe for this Ibanez / Suhr boy. Please get one to examine TROGLY-style.... Cheers!

I love mine, but the fret finishing was shocking and required a tech to finish what should have been done by the factory. Action was hilariously high out the box. Now its sorted it plays as well as it sounds. I love explorers and am a huge fan of Brendon Small but the quality bears watching on current epiphones

i like the whole fret on top of fretboard and binding like this one,usually gibson guitar fret only on the fretboard,but not on the binding, is carving binding make it match the fret right..? usually people refret gibson guitar, all looks like that right..? to me i just like that kind of fretboard bind or no bind.

I found the Epiphone Thunderhorse used from Guitar Center a few years ago for a great price and ordered it. It arrived in two pieces and chipped all up the back end. I was unhappy to say the least lol. Haven't found one for a decent price since.

That's the riff from Cyclone Temple! Nice guitar by the way. Love your channel. Greetings from Holland.

This looks lovely. If it is too heavy / hard on the shoulder, get a wider guitar strap.

Latest signature release with a Floyd is the Epiphone Alex Lifeson Les Paul Axcess.... looks like there is a wait list so I guess no review for a while?

The veneer on yours looks Great. Allot of these look like 2 different veneers. The wood grain goes one way on the top and completely different on the bottom and I don't like that. Def have to Cherry pick one that has a good top.

Do you think it would be able to use drop b tuning without Buzz?

I just wish that when Gibson uses a Floyd they would put a F spaced pickup in

Running out of room at the 23rd fret? Les Paul players would think that is a bonus, not a negative. It's why I like SGs as well as Les Paul guitars. Epiphone Futrua is $1999 at our local NZ dealer ($1430 USD). At that price I'd keep saving. The BS model is not here yet :D P.S. I remember recently seeing something about a new Vivian Campbell model coming, i.e., not the burst one. Lot's of us Gen X Dio liking types would love to see that one investigated by Trogly's eagle eyes. Styled like his old Norlin one on the surface. I am not sure if it was just for him, if it's a of run of them to go with the Epiphone ones. Now I can not find the video, so perhaps I dreamt it :D

If I wanted this specific model, it would be with the ultimate goal to swap out those volume controls with stacked ones, a la Danelectro.

Can you actually pull up on that trem? Wtf is up with company’s putting Floyd rose trems on shit and not routing out the body!?!

The angled headstock helps but yeah I get what you mean.

next time you do a guitar with a trem (floyd or traditional), measure the spacing between the two studs and also lift the trem and show the spring block to show if its a brass, steel, etc... along with its measurement (usually stamped on there)
@SionynJones3 жыл бұрын
It's steel certainly not brass unless it been plated.
