📚Description: I Bought the NEW "Studio Session" Les Paul - Is It Worth It?
In late 2024, Gibson launched the new "Studio Session" Les Paul. The name feels a bit like an afterthought, as this is basically a gloss-finished "Modern Studio" with an AA top and new pickups, but I give them props for trying out a new naming structure instead of "Modern Studio AA Gloss." This video is designed to help you determine some of the differences between the "Les Paul Studio" "Les Paul Studio Modern" and "Les Paul Studio Session" to ensure you pick the right one for you.

I think Gibson have completely missed the point of what the Studio was meant to be…a stripped back Les Paul, without the fancy cosmetic appointments, a workhorse guitar at a working price. It’s a lovely guitar but it’s not what I think of as the old Studio, especially the price.

They should just have given the modern heel to the regular studio as it is a true players workhorse feature, but no they had to artificially make that overpriced again. This model has absolutely no reason to be that much more expensive.

I went to Guitar Center the other day and played one of these, same color. It looks phenomenal in person and feels and sounds amazing. It delivers everything I want from a Les Paul and doesn't have any features I don't want, all for a price I think is in the goldilocks zone for a "flagship" guitar. To me it's CLEAR as day that this particular guitar is Gibson's answer to the PRS S2 Custom 24-08. Similar feature set, modern playability, slimmer neck, similar tops. Basically stripped down versions of their nicest, most tonally-diverse modern guitars for the discerning player. It's actually a tough choice going into the guitar store and deciding between these two quality and tone wise. And Gibson is actually coming in cheaper. This new CEO really knows what market to attack and how to do it. I think these are serious contenders for modern players looking for a brand new USA-made instrument. To be clear, I like Gibson (my main player is an SG), but I'm not necessarily loyal to one brand. I've got a USA Fender and Musicman. I just like a guitar that plays and sounds good, and I love when brands step up to make a killer instrument.

@johtohoennfan45
@johtohoennfan45 Ай бұрын
@ They could definitely strip down more. But you have to look at it in terms of what other brands are selling their stuff for + the features people want. Clearly, the people want modern switching, a flame top, and binding on the neck, so they keep that on there. They strip back other stuff to differentiate it from the Moderns or Supremes. Compared to the PRS I just mentioned it has about as many features for about $300 less, and there's even the $1500 version if you want it stripped down even more. While it may seem expensive, that's the world we're living in. Gibson isn't doing anything out-of-the-ordinary with this pricing because they're actually selling a good bit of guitar for the money. Now, in that same Guitar Center, there was a used 2006 Les Paul Classic for the same price which oozed way more mojo: gorgeous quilt top, slightly comfier neck, better tone. You could always go that route, but you lose on other things; to me the modern switching and weight relief is MASSIVE, so it's not like it's a no-brainer either.

I bought a new Studio in blueberry burst in September when they came out. It was so amazing that I bought a bourbon burst Studio Session when they came out in December. It’s one of the best guitars I’ve ever played. Fit and finish on both are perfect and the setup out of the box was pretty spot on, only minor intonation needed. The BB Pros on the Studio sound great in HB mode especially, but the 57 Classics on the Studio Session are some of the best I’ve heard. And I love the ebony fretboard. I got an absolutely amazing top on mine, and oddly enough, mine came with vintage deluxe tuners rather than the Grovers. I actually don’t mind, but I reached out to Gibson and they are sending me a set of the Grovers in case I ever want to swap them out. Gibson seems to be on a roll and I think they knocked the new Studios out of the park!

Went to the local GC a few days after release and they hadn't even unboxed these yet. The only one they actually had the Bourbon busts but it was literally perfect out of the box/gig bag. I played it for about an hour, decided to sleep on it and went back the next morning. Very pleased with this guitar, the ebony fretboard is super smooth and the 57 Classics are my favorite Gibson pickups so it was a win for me. Fit and finish was spot on from the factory, something I couldn't say for some of the other LPs at the store. I can see a little of my cap with the BB buy not as well as you can with the Honeyburst. My ebony board is super tight on the grain, perhaps I got lucky!

Gibson uses it's "Coil Tap" on these instead of real splitting. This put's a capacitor in parallel to one coil instead of shorting it out completely, leading to a more single coil like tone while maintaining the hum cancelling. That's why the reading doesn't change when pulling the knobs.

I'm glad they went with the 57 classics. They're better than the 490/498 imo. I really like the Studio Sesh (AA). The ebony fretboard, the slim profile, the swoop neck joint, decent figured tops, and the natural faux body binding on the honey burst are all sweet attributes. The neck profile did look super skinny. If it's like the SG slim taper, it's all good. It looked flatter than that in the video tho. It's cool to see Gibson kick out some high-quality workhouse guitars that don't require a second mortgage.

I haven't tried one yet, but on paper I like these as well. I feel like gibson finally got the right mix of specs. I was torn between the studio modern and studio "the one". Neither had exactly what I was looking for and I was started to think maybe a used classic would be the best option. But when they released this it seemed to fit exactly what I am looking for. April is gibson month at my local dealer, so will probably pick one up then.

When you are taking a resistance reading, you are providing a voltage from the meter. It uses Ohm's law to determine the resistance from a known voltage source. Some PCB systems may have diodes in place to suppress noise or for other circuit protection methods. This will stop you from passing a current through the circuit in the wrong direction. Switching the polarity of the meter leads may not solve the issue since the protection device may be a Zener Diode or a large capacitor. The classic wiring style of a hand wired guitar lets you measure the circuit. To really know the pickup value, you need to remove it from the circuit and then measure the resistance of the coils. This is all conjecture, based on a 25 year career working on Ion Implanters. So another viewer may have a more accurate explanation.

@stew9063
@stew9063 Ай бұрын
Trogly- the reason you don’t measure half resistance in the split coil mode is because Gibson uses a capacitor to connect the midpoint of the two humbucker coils to ground. Capacitors will block the dc current from your ohm meter. This was explained in a Gibson video with their master luthier during session launch.

I feel like Gibson heard people complaining about the satin finish on the Modern Studio, which did look and feel cheap for a 2000 dollar guitar, and this is them correcting that. I think we'll see the Modern Studio discontinued in 2025. Though I wish they would have done the 496R/500T instead of the 57 classics. Not that the 57 classics are bad but this guitar has a very modern feel to me, especially the ebony one.

Whats funny about that to me is, I like Satin finishes on guitars more than the gloss.. I don't know what it is exactly but every guitar I have with a Satin finish on it vibrates more and something about that makes me feel as if the guitar is alive.. Every gloss guitar I have vibrates a lot less, I even like open pore finishes over these for the same reason lol.. I don't think Satin finishes make guitars look cheaper, I think gloss finishes do to be honest.. Think about it, look at all the Glarry and Donner Guitars, each one has a gloss finish.. Sure those are polly and these are Nitro, but if we are basing cheapness on the look alone, cheap guitars are almost always shiny lol. though to be honest, I think its insane that anyone is willing to buy a 2 thousand dollar guitar that is made off the line, to me that is Custom shop pricing.. Man I am old lol.
@PaulLewis-zb2ew
@PaulLewis-zb2ew Ай бұрын
@@lfaf9509 Well not all satin finishes are created equal. I have a Mod Collection Les Paul Classic with a satin finish and it looks and feels amazing. But I saw the Manahattan Midnight finish on the Modern Studio and it literally looked like they just hired some kid to spray paint it blue and then spray paint the edges in black and called it a day. It did look cheap. It looked and felt even cheaper than my 500 dollar Indonesian Ibanez. And the back and neck were open pore which made it seem like Gibson was cutting corners while also raising prices compared to previous iterations of the studio. That's what annoyed people. Satin finishes are cheaper to produce compared to gloss so they should be associated with lower prices, like how the Standard Faded is cheaper than a normal Standard, and not higher prices, like the Modern Studio vs. a Normal Studio.
@lfaf9509
@lfaf9509 Ай бұрын
@@PaulLewis-zb2ew Satin finishes are cheaper to produce right? So how come the cheapest guitars on the market, all have gloss finishes? Glarry guitars have gloss finishes on them, Donner guitars have gloss finishes, even Harley Benton guitars have gloss finishes on them.... I think people have it in their head that gloss means expensive and Satin means cheap. People can be right or wrong, and the size of the group has no bearing on if they are right... I think its funny because I personally like Open pore Satin finishes on guitars more than cheap gloss finishes.. I have always associated gloss finishes with cheap guitars, where others associate gloss finishes with expensive guitars.. Sure it is more complicated with the fact that one guitar will have a polly finish and the other a nitro finish, but since we are just talking about glossy vs Satin, nitro vs polly seems less important. ..
@PaulLewis-zb2ew
@PaulLewis-zb2ew Ай бұрын
@@lfaf9509A satin poly finish is cheaper than a gloss poly finish, but a gloss poly finish is cheaper than a satin nitro finish. You're comparing nitro apples to poly oranges. A satin finish takes less labor to produce than a gloss finish, but a nitro finish takes up to two weeks to cure whereas a poly finish dries in a matter of hours, which decreases factory throughput which increases costs. Nitro finishes are also easier to mess up which means more overhead, in the form of ruined finishes needing to be reapplied, which takes extra time, and also needing to pay more skilled workers higher wages.
@lfaf9509
@lfaf9509 Ай бұрын
@@PaulLewis-zb2ew and yet, every single cheap guitar I can find has a gloss finish.. I see gloss finishes as looking cheaper because every cheap guitar I can find has one, not because it cost some manufacturer less to make them. We are not comparing Nitro to polly, we are comparing what looks cheap vs what looks expensive between gloss and Satin finishes. If we were comparing Nitro to Polly, I would choose Polly over Nitro any day of the week. For the same reasons why cars don't have Nitro Finishes on them anymore, because Nitro Finishes don't last, they fade faster, they crack easier, they react to more things negatively in the environment... Over all, if we compare the two types of finish over multiple metrics, Nitro looses by a long shot.... As I said, every cheap guitar comes with a gloss finish, which is why I see gloss finishes as cheaper looking. What we don't see a lot at the low end, is Satin finishes on guitars.. No matter the brand, the cheaper guitars are almost always one solid color with gloss...

A humbucker has 2 coils in serie. If you turn around 1 coil. they still have 2 coils in series so the same resistance. If you change phase between 2 pick ups you only flip some wires, there is still the same amount of wire so the same resistance as not flipped. If you put 2 coils parallel instead of in series you halve the total resistance. The same if you put to pickups parallel. If you switch them to single coil by switching off one coil you half the resistance etc etc. All those values are DC resistance. DC does not care about the placing and phase of coils. For AC it is much more complex and things like phase make the difference in sound. But that is hard to explain correct in a simple way for someone without electronic basic knowledge. And even for someone who knows the basics it is complex.

I saw one today and it looked pretty good in person. If I didn’t already have a 1990 studio with ebony board and standard 60s I’d seriously consider getting one used or at a discount. I like the modern features and it’s different enough from my 1990 studio that I could justify this.

@ I got an alpine white one. It’s one of my most cherished guitars. Came with the 498T/490R pickups which absolutely scream for the hard rock and metal I play. I use a lot of modelers and digital stuff like my Fender Micro Mustang. I also have a Marshall DSL-1. I’m in the process of upgrading to a TP6 tail piece too. I did a few videos with it on my channel if you’re interested in seeing and hearing it.

That black gives me Joe Perry Les Paul vibes (aesthetically). As far as the Studio vs The One vs Modern vs Sedsion, I like the idea of having a lot of choices but agree with many that the studio lineup needs to be streamlined or revisited. Imagine if they also still had the Tributes around too 😂

Great review! I picked one up last month... After an extensive online search for the best looking one I could find (Bourbon or Honey Burst), I made a deal with a small store on the East Coast: Incredible looking Bourbon Burst (best top out of 30+ guitars) with nice back and neck / 8.5 lbs... made me a deal at $1,799 delivered (Oregon). I have owned Gibson LP Standards, Custom, Classic, Studio Premium Plus, Traditional and 2 MIJ Epiphone Elitists. This particular guitar is built, finished and assembled better than any of them. Once adjusted, the 57s sound amazing! With this model, for me, the Studio is now a full equal to The Standard, Classic and Custom. The tone, look feel and playability (and mojo) are all there. Well aware I could have found a mint Standard for similar money; I am so happy that this was my choice! Added a hard case. Done. Regarding the push/pulls... I'll never use them which is Ok with me. The good news is that the pots are all CTS and all have the same nice feel and decent taper (no slack). I may tack solder in a couple of treble bleeds which, if handled with care, looks like it could be done (and undone) without having to remove the PCB. 100% happy with my purchase of this guitar. I have been nearly unable to put it down since it was delivered 3 weeks ago.

@jimbixler6337
@jimbixler6337 Ай бұрын
@@BB-xn1rw I set the guitar up with EB Super Slinky .009s / action low / minimal relief (almost flat). I have always liked the 57 Classic / Classic + set... Oddly, these came with the poles on both pickups sticking way out (for me) of the covers / all at the same (extreme) height. The neck PU was adjusted to close overall / the bridge too far away. I lowered the poles down flush with the cover on both, ever so slightly raised the D poles / slightly lowered the Gs. The rest I left flush. I raised the bridge PU until it sounded good. I lowered the neck until it sounded good (and the volumes matched). Voila! This gave me the fattness, clarity and smoothness I like from this set. I just love this guitar and can't put it down! (A good sign!) I had $2K to spend on an LP... I could have purchased one hell of a used Standard but am sooo happy I did not. These are fantastic guitars! Look for a good one. Mine weighs 8.5 lbs. I think that if you had one that was too light (less than 8lbs) it could sound kind of spongy. At 8.5lbs, mine sounds, feels and looks fantastic (Goldilocks).

I personally cannot stand Gibson PCB 🤷🏻‍♂️it’s either 50’s style or modern Standard (grounding plate) or nothing at all for me. If I bought one of these I would immediately re-wire it. I have a 2017 SG I had to completely gut because something went out & because it was a PCB I had no way of knowing exactly what it was without taking the time to measure the pickups. It was much simpler to completely gut it & re-wire it with 500K CTS pots, orange drop caps & new 57 Classic & 57 Classic Plus pickups. I also hate push/pull pots but that’s just me.

LP Tributes were the sweethearts IMO. Maple neck? Who cares? Binding? Who needs binding? The modern Studio offerings are not enticing me in the least. Of course I am always looking for a whooped Studio from the last 15 years to do my magic on... These current Studios will likely not ever be donor candidates as by the time I do my magic, you could have bought a Standard, unless you're wanting to do your own Murphy Lab at a fraction of the price.

I just cant get there with the Studio models anymore. I feels strangely like they are pushing the low cost lines into higher price territory to make room for the price increases we see in the Epiphone line - and throwing these "upgrades" into the offering to try to provide cover for the cost increase. On a larger scale, the upgrades are likely cross-model sharing of parts/options that are not adding cost (maybe even lowering cost) while at the same time, raising prices. I am happy with the Gibsons I have so I am glad that I am not looking for one in the current environment.

So now the studio session only lacks a binding opposite to the les Paul standard but adds some coil switching. And that binding costs 1500 dollar extra? I bought a standard last year, if I had known I would now buy the session because I miss the pickup switching I had made on my Burny LP clone (3 DiMarzio pickups, 19 toggle switches 🙂)
