I love how in TLA, the five man band evolves as it expands. at first, there's this weird power trio of Aang as the heart (most compassionate), katara (the clever one) as the smart gall, and sokka as the big guy (the brute of the bunch). As their bending gets better and Toph joins, Aang comes closer to the leader role, Katara becomes more of a heart, and Sokka becomes a bit of a lancer, with Toph becoming the big gall (and an absolute badass). eventually, Sokka becomes more and more of an idea guy, compensating for his muggleness with his quick thinking, his knack for inventions, and his crazy plans. eventually, Zuko joins up, and we have a proper lancer to completely fill out a conventional band. aaaand, there's only 5 episodes left until the finale starts.

@mint's trenchcoat I know its a simple joke, but the funny thing is, in theory you can drink mercury quite safely - though personaly I have not intention to do so. In it's elemental form, it's not all that bioavailable, meaning, the body won't take it up. And due to it's high specific density, it would simply run through your bowels like a marble down a drain pipe. If memory serves me right, some folks even used it in this way to treat indigestion (you know, like a liquid battering ram...).

Personally I’d classify Sypha as a mix of Heart and Smart Guy, since she has a lot of arcane knowledge to supplement Trevor’s fighting skills and tends to be the “moral core” keeping everyone together. Alucard is definitely a mix of Lancer and Big Guy, with his standoffish nature and immense dhampir powers… Trevor to me kinda functions as both Hero and Big Guy by proxy.

One campaign idea i have that would side step this (and throw out party comp), would be you are all students at X university of magic and recieve quests from a specific professor to kill, collect, or study something. The consequences of this would be: - quests are matched to party level - basically everyone would be a squishy magic user so the fights can be interesting (maybe the tank is a hired bodyguard for the students) - railroad potential is high but out of character interactions should guide you on where in world to send your players - great excuse for magic items at low levels (may need to turn in after each quest/mission) - great rp potential if players talk to anybody while at base/school so hopefully no murder hobos

Extra tip: Don't be afraid to play around with the typical roles! In my current story, the lancer is also the leader's love interest, the big guy is a tall muscular woman, and the heart is a disgruntled father. Messing around with the stereotypes of these roles makes your story a lot of fun to write!

My five-man band with an extra sixth Leader: Male. The protagonist with a unique ability that the others can't get. Often friendly with the group The heart: Female. Becomes the leaders best friend. A friendly... friend except for one character. The lancer: Male. The heart's brother who is often distant to his own sibling. A sub role for him is also the smart guy, using strategy rather than brute force since his strength isn't enough. The big guy: Female. Not actually big, but is often the most balanced fighter in both physical and magic attacks. Slowly becomes best friends with the lancer. The... other big guy: Male. Yep.. two big guys. Very respectful and is usually the one to follow the mentor's footsteps. A sub role for him is the leader for both the "big gal" and the "lancer". And finally the mentor: Female. A close friend of the Leader, and a sub roles as the heart, the leader, and another big guy. Being the oldest of the group, she is the most experienced, well-armored, and the most emotionally stable.

Red, you have to check out this awesome show called Ninjago. So much of what you were saying in this video applied to the group of main characters. But the crazy thing I realized about Ninjago is that the characters changed their role and dynamics as time went on. And example is the main character Lloyd. First, he was the tag along kid. Then he became the heart. Later he became the heart/leader, and finally he just becomes the leader. It's really cool and nearly all the main cast went through their own change in dynamics. The Straw Hat Pirates gets into this trope straightly in the East Blue Saga of One Piece. Luffy takes the role of The Leader as he is the captain of the crew and also the hero and the main character of the story. Zoro, Luffy's right hand man is The Lancer. His personality also opposites his own captain. While Luffy is a cheerful, happy go lucky idiot hero, Zoro is stoic, serious and more mature than the former. Sanji is The Big Guy as long as he is the martial artist of the ship. This chainsmoking chef is joined with Luffy and Zoro as the strongest trio. Usopp is The Smart Guy. Though he is the weakest among the crew, this guy is a very brilliant gadgeeter, crafter and inventor. Nami is The Chick or The Heart. She's the main female character and she also very sensitive. Personally I think it would be an interesting character arc for a character the audience believes won't die to actually die. In order to flesh this out, the other characters could also believe this character to be alive, while the plot could build up to the inevitable realization of both the characters and the audience that the dead character is truly dead, and they aren't coming back.

It's also interesting how Avatar shifts these roles around between major plot elements. The Lancer role is the most obvious, with Sokka filling that role in addition to being Smart Guy in Book 1, and when Toph joined up she took on the Lancer role in addition to being the Big Guy. Whenever the Lancer gained respect for the leader, a new Lancer would usually join the group.

I think Jay and Zane should be flipped, Jay tends to be more of the smart guy and having a higher intelligence than the others where as Zane despite the big reveal about him is the one that tends to have moments of self sacrifice or a character arc than the others along with his friendship to others as seen with both the team and his falcon ally before he learned about himself.

I will say though that while Matt, Tai and Izzy have defined roles, the others all seem to collectively shift into other roles. I'll put it like this: Tai: Leader Matt: Lancer Sora: Shifts between a secomdary Lancer and the Heart Izzy: Smart Guy Mimi: Big Guy I guess? Joe: I think he serves as a backup Smart Guy TK: Heart, later becomes Team 2's lancer Kari: Sixth ranger, and team 2's Heart

@@glitchwarrior7270 huh. Never thought about it, but there seems to be a lot of heart here. Not only does Sora seem more "heart" than "lancer" to me, I'm pretty sure that's all Joe is. The only reason it isn't more obvious is that there is more than one heart, so he doesn't have that much to do. After all, "Reliability" is his defining trait, and what's more emotionally stabilizing in a large group than that? I don't remember him ever filling the clever guy role, but his whole purpose seems to revolve around keeping team 1 together.

I actually see it a bit different: Davis: first Lancer to T.K., later Leader T.K.: first Leader, later Big Guy Kari: Heart Cody: Smart Guy, later also Lancer to T.K. Yolei: Lancer to Kari Ken: Sixth Ranger and Lancer to Davis The Lancer dynamic is obvious with their merging partner Digimon. Anyway the Five Man Band fits the Frontier protagonists much more.
