A few years ago, a friend of mine suggested that I get my CDL. I'm about to go do it, but honestly, I don't really want to. I've always had an interest in healthcare and medicine. I might make a lifelong career out of it or i might drive for a few years, get myself a nice ride and build a nice savings and move on to the next thing I want to do. I think I'd still maintain my CDL should I ever want to go back to it. I might drive for a long time. I might not. I guess it depends on how much I like it when I do it.

This is how I felt about driving. There’s too much bs in this industry now. I wish I had done more than pay off my car early in the first 4 years. Now I’m in my 5th year it’s all about saving up to figure out what to do next. I love it at times, but others it’s a miserable job that sucks the life out of me. But idk anything else I can make close to 2k a week. Even though I’m home daily I’m barely there. 6 days a week at almost 70 hours every week. Once I get up to 20k idk what I’ll do, but it’ll give me some freedom to decide. Maybe I’ll stay in, maybe I’ll get my own truck to do things my way. Or maybe I’ll get out and try something else, even if I fail at it. Better to have a life and go for your dreams than sit in that truck stressing about bills and being away. Trucking is a good job, but that’s all it is. A job. It’s really not a career anymore. I wish more drivers realized that. And I wish more companies would tell you hey, after 6 months you’re prob gonna want to quit. So save up, invest, do what you can do if you do you can stay afloat and come back later if you like. Instead they push these lease op programs like you’re gonna be a real owner op but you’ll just be a new driver in debt and forced to work for the truck and them. The point of this job is to make good money and break free from the chains of the corporate world.

Facts bro. Maybe in the 70s and 80s a 9-5 or like you said working a job until you're 60 something years old like most of our ancestors had to do, in my opinion it's just not the wave anymore. Like you said again, there's so many different avenues to make money out here versus working for some company who doesn't give a damn about you until you're 65 years old, it's just not it, and a lot of our ancestors hate it, because, technology has advanced so much. People are literally 19 to 25 years old becoming millionaires just off social media.

Prior to trucking, I was a Sales Manager for Krispy Kreme in the transportation department. I worked there for 15 years. Started out as a route delivery driver and managed to work my way up into leadership roles. I enjoyed the freedom that came with being a manager. Unfortunately, the company downsized in 2018 and laid off 42 Sales Managers in the company. They gave us the option to apply for other positions or take a severance package. I chose to take the latter and start a new career in trucking. It not only was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made but also one of the best investments. That’s my “before I was trucking” story 🤣

As you should. Trucking takes your most valuable commodity. Time. It will take your health if you let it and it will take your spirit you stay in long enough. Good companies are few and far in between, you're just a pulse in a seat and they will treat you as such. The regulations, the danger, the politics, we don't make nearly enough to make it worth it, It's only getting worse. I tell young cats, learn a trade, build skills, learn how to sell. Invest in yourself. Trucking has a very low ceiling and you'll hit it fast.

Aside from social media, we are more importantly watching the depressing exits from the workforce of Boomers/Gen X and saying "shoot, I still got 20-30 years and they doing them like that RIGHT NOW?!" Trucking serves a purpose like the military also where it can be a ticket out of poverty. You sacrifice your health but the entry is attainable for many folks. But you may not be in for the long term, just a quick solution.

I believe local trucking can be better depending on where you live. If you look on Indeed, it seems there are loads of jobs in the state of Wisconsin. Of course, you’ll see jobs in any state if you do a search and don’t enter a particular city. But WI seems to be loaded with local jobs (not OTR). Another state of interest is WV. There seem to be decent paying jobs, and state is one of the lowest cost of living areas. Even if a job in WV technically pays the same as where I currently reside, if I can buy a home or rent for much cheaper, it may be worth it to move there. You mention you live in Fl; I live in south Ga, so I’d be in for quite a shock come winter time if I moved to either of those states. But it’s something I would consider. NV also seems to be a hotspot for local driving jobs, but cost of living expenses are definitely higher there (not NY or CA high but still high).
