"Wilmer McLean (May 3, 1814 - June 5, 1882) was an American wholesale grocer from Virginia. His house, near Manassas, Virginia, was involved in the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861. After the battle, he moved to Appomattox, Virginia, to escape the war, thinking that it would be safe. Instead, in 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in McLean's house in Appomattox. His houses were, therefore, involved in one of the first and one of the last encounters of the American Civil War." I miss Matt...

It would be pretty terrible advice for a battle where he was ordering his men to attack the guys holding all the high ground, and Robert E. Lee was also noted for his very formal speech (reportedly preferring to give orders about 'those people over there' as opposed to 'the enemy'), so I am guessing almost certainly not.
@xalrathАй бұрын
eight million percent no, it's completely made up attacking basically anyone who had prepared defenses in the civil war meant attacking uphill, and Lee did his share of attacking

@1:33 I'm British so stop me if I'm coming in too hot but why is Alex mentioning British ancestry here? Was it only British descendants who fought in the civil war?
@glass_knucklesАй бұрын
he's totally, bafflingly off-base. Germans fought in the civil war, overwhelmingly for the union because most of the German immigrants were liberals and were settled in the north.
@chrislee2683Ай бұрын
I can’t recall the stats off the top of my head but it is true that a majority of the current US population’s ancestors arrived *after* the Civil War. Particularly those from central/southern/Eastern Europe and Latin America. The base of the Union Army would’ve been English (with a hefty dose Irish immigrants, Germans, and Scandinavians from the Great Lakes area). Southern boys were mostly of Scots-Irish descent. Though they also had Native American tribes, French Cajuns, German Texans, and some Hispanic units from Texas/Florida in the mix) As the previous commenter mentioned, many Germans in Texas wanted to remain neutral. There is a monument to a party of them massacred for simply trying to cross into Mexico to avoid the war. As Trump would say, “SAD! So Sad. It’s incredible…the Germans. Just think of it…”
