Governor Northam, DEM of my state VA restored my voting rights and many other felons' four years ago without regard to skin color, before he left office. In Virginia, governors can't serve two consecutive terms, so it didn't serve him politically. it's good to know there are some elected officials who are just good people. I got a beautiful official letterer with a very nice embossed gold official seal. It is a reminder of how precious voting is in a democracy. But it's still the south here, and gov. Younkin REP likes Jim Crow, so I can still be a slave. And a notary public.

He was following what Terry McAuliff did the term before. I am a VA ex felon as well. In 2015-2016 he restored carte blanche all voting rights for felons that had completed parole/probation. It was something like 200k at the time. The right fought him and sued for a couple reasons. One, they said he had to actually sign each one, as by law the reinstatement of rights had to ba a signed order from the governor. Two, he also included sex offenders that were civilly committed. Those civilly committed were done with all penal requirements, but were now held civilly - a huge can of worms this comment doesn't have room for. So, the original reinstatement was rescinded, and he did it again, as I understand, signing all of the papers. There were many who said he did it to get Clinton more votes in the 2016 election. Regardless of his reasoning, prior to that, you had to petition the governor yourself, and most often, no mater what party was in office, it would get declined or left unanswered. So in these worst states it is a constantly moving target depending on the current government, and used not to protect the public, but as a political football, used to score points with other constituents - to the detriment of those who have done their time and want to participate.

@@quigleyscorner4881 once they have been restored, it shoudn't be an isue. I am not a lawyer, but I do not think it can be rescinded short of a lawsuit that challenges your civil rights or a new felony. Where did you do time if you don't mind me asking? Also, you can petition the court to have your probation requirements removed early. I did, and the first time it was a new judge who said no, then the next year I was allowed. My PO recommended it.

@@WBradleyRobbins I just missed the newly legislated 5 year maximum probation, so I'm in the middle of 10 years. (I'm also relieved that I won't receive the death penalty, haha). I've had six PO's plus 2 temporary PO's in the last 5 years. I know a bunch of felons who went off probation at the 50% mark without petition or hearing, their PO just wrote a letter to the judge. It is looking positive that over the next few months I will be able to get off, as long as I don't get another new PO. I did 18 months in PWC. You?

I’m in Florida. I became a felon 33 years ago. I completed my probation 31 years ago. I fought to get my right to vote back and it took TEN YEARS! I’m lucky…I’m a white woman who came from a middle class family. I had the money to hire an attorney to get my voting rights back. Poor people don’t have that luxury. And the bigots here don’t want everyone to vote. Only the people who will vote FOR them.

I moved to Alabama about 4 years ago from California. Since I’ve always voted by mail there, I wanted to do that here. Well, I had to specify why I wanted to do that , as in, some medical reason..I made the case that I’m a senior citizen with extremely high blood pressure all during the Covid pandemic..and also had to have two people witness my application for a mail in ballot. Waited and waited for the court house to send it, until I finally called and asked them where it was. They said the mailman wrote on it undeliverable, and it was sent back! Well that didn’t stop me from voting. I went straight over to the polling place and voted. In the nick of time! The roadblocks were definitely in place to try to keep me from voting. Nothing will stop me! It is my Democratic right !

I get him. It is the issue with a limited 2 party system. He is in many ways both right and wrong. But really this is more an example of why a 2-party system is not working. Most of NATO is a multi-party system. We fell behind and need to catch up. Maybe that will light a fire under those not seeing a "need" for their vote.

Four years ago while voting, I saw serious mistakes by the poll workers. Whipped home, fired up computer, became a certified poll watcher and returned. Stayed until voting stopped. More mistakes, but now I had status to correct them. Called the person (I don't remember her title) in charge of organizing poll workers, disagreement, she agreed to call state and check. Called her back the next day, and I WAS RIGHT. She was ticked. One was a released felon, here in MI, they turned him away until I stepped in.
