@@sirdiealot53 All in the Family and Good Times. Start there. I think those were his two most influential works. As a 57 year-old white American, a kid when those shows were on, I was shocked, entertained, and I laughed at the reality those shows presented - in their own silly way. Lear was a fearless writer who upset people on the left and the right, but he gave us a lot to think about, and he thrived when he wrote about the imperfections in all of us. Like, being a bigot is an awful thing, but even bigots are human, and they deserve love. Somehow he navigated that. It made sense when he told those stories. We are all flawed humans with a lot to learn, and we all deserve a chance, and love.

bro Kimmel is so disappointing. I guarantee at some point in his life he was a cool guy you'd like to be friends with. Or maybe not honestly it's hard to say, because making weird comments and videos like this make it clear he has a hatred for trump. I'm not a trump supporter hating on him. I am an individual who uses my own brain to think and whenever I see ANY person push so hard for one side, it has become more and more clear, it is either become they are paid off, or very ignorant. In his position, he is more than likely paid off.

So many of his shows gave life lessons on prejudices, racism, being a good neighbor, women's rights, and so much more. The humor helped us to see that many of those who spout hate, often do so in ignorance, from every race, color, and creed. He had and will continue to have an impact through his shows and characters. He lived to 101, that says a great deal about who he was and how he lived. A pioneer who is now a legend. Rest in peace until the rapture.🕊️

The knob was so full of tiny numbers that it definitely wasn't precise. Remember that the knob on the left had to be on the "U"!!! And wiggle the rabbit ears every time we changed the channel. I bet cumulatively: our generation spent a month of our lives trying to adjust the knobs and antenna.

I agree about Norman, but I disagree about how things are today. We can still say what we want, with as much freedom as ever (thanks in no small part to Norman Lear). Do you think complaining about non-PC speech is a new invention? Introducing someone like Archie Bunker was risky for that very reason. He said offensive things in every episode. All Norman Lear did was to add context. It's not the words, it's the intention of the speaker that really matters, and today people are just as likely to confuse the two as they were in the 70s. Lear was loved and hated. He was a lightning rod for the left and the right. His gift was in revealing the deeper truth beneath the words. People today might be more afraid to push those boundaries, but that's their own fear, not the world around them. People aren't more sensitive or critical. I think people are just more afraid of that criticism. Norman Lear thrived in that world. That kind of criticism didn't stop him, and I'm privileged to have grown up during his heyday!

The tribute was perfect. It reminded me of better times. Back when we could laugh and not take everything so seriously. Then reality hit. We are close to possibly having a dictator in charge.

Nice personal tribute to Norman Lear. Growing up, I think all of his shows, often controversial, occupied our family television almost every night. His wit allowed him to broach controversy, and we all benefitted from the discussions spawned by his works.

Who else is reading the comments and crying? I'm so sad the world has lost such a genius, trailblazer, and gold-hearted man. He was a pioneer, and there's no doubt he faced incredible backlash, but he insisted on humor his way, with the subject matter he wanted, treated with humor, compassion, and humanity. Norman Lear's comedic accomplishments were his gifts to all of us, and they multiplied thousandfold. He touched so many hearts and made so many of us think, and feel, and laugh together, realizing me are more alike than unlike, and encouraging us to drop the facades of hatred and division, and accept each other as we are, coexisting in peace and joy. It may sound corny, but my heart aches and longs for the tolerance and universal understanding and humanity and good will toward one's fellow human that existed back then. It truly was a golden age, and I can't believe we've gone so far backward. It's like we've been shell-shocked for years. We need to turn it around, or it will be an insult to everything he gave us. And no, that absolutely cannot stand.

All in the Family may be the greatest comedy in American history. Brilliantly written, acted, and produced. A time capsule of its time but also relevant for all time. RIP Mr. Lear. Great words honoring Mr. Lear.

R.I.P. Norman Lear! He made audiences think while laughing! He made shows my parents love, shows that my generation loved, and came back after a short retirement to demonstrate how timeless his ideas were. He was an activist and hero as well as someone who changed television forever!

I think Norman Lear would approve of the sketch. It's presented with a strong satirical bite, but has empathy, goofy comedy, and honest talk. Well done, y'all. (Santos Clause killed me)

Years ago, we were vacationing in So Cal, and had the chance to see a show live. We had the choices of a new Joe Namath sitcom, an unknown new show called Three's Company, and Maude. We chose a known, Maude. After the taping, Norman offered the audience a free meal at a local restaurant to anyone who went there. We had to get back to our hotel as it was late, so missed out in seeing if that was a real offer. What a treat if we had gone.
