Loved the Clark Terry Ellington plunger mute demo, and also the sound of the wooden mute, and the copper Jo Ral harmon mute. Great to hear these mutes demonstrated with melodies and the backing tracks to put context into the impact of the mute on the traditional open trumpet tone. Fantastic!

‘Someone took my mute by mistake’ haha pretty generous assessment of the situation

Ive gotta admit the bucket mute did soften it up and sound allot like a flugelhorn. you may have saved me a great deal of money. thanks for the demo of the mutes

Great sounding demos on all the, really getting the style and individuality of each. I read that the HB pixie is really slippery in the low register but you’re getting a great sound with it. I was thinking to get a best brass straight mini or a tom crown pixie but maybe I shouldn’t ignore the Humes & Berg after all.

The Humes & Berg is THAT classic sound and you should certainly pick it up (in my opinion) even if you also end up buying an alternate mute. Also, I think the key to getting the mute to speak in the low register is to find the right amount of cork that fits your trumpet. When the cork is super thick or too thin then it can lead to problems.

@@ChrisDavisTrumpet thanks, that’s a helpful answer, especially as going to a music shop is not possible in the UK at the moment and mute practice is about all my neighbours can handle.

Great music, incredible playing, and very interesting. One thing - it'd be good if we could see the mute while you're playing - you're obviously doing a lot of work with your left hand, but it's all off-screen!

My favorite mute is the Yamaha Silent Brass mute. I can play my horn at any time using that mute. I have a Harmon mute, straight mute, cup mute, bucket mute, and some wah wah mutes. I want to get a pixie mute one day. My mutes are made by Humes & Berg and Jo-Ral. I use a country crock butter tub as a wah wah mute to give me that Tyree Glenn trombone wah wah mute sound.

JazzFan76 I love the Yamaha Silent Brass! Is very quiet and free blowing throughout the registers. Very good for a practice mute! 😂 pretty funny that you use that butter tub as a wash! I never considered that! How does it sound and how does it feel?

@@ChrisDavisTrumpet I love the way it sounds and feels. It sounds just like Tyree Glenn's sound. I can only use that mute and my plunger mute on the cornet because my arms are too short and my hand can't reach the trumpet bell with a wah wah mute. 🎺

Thank you! Man, sometimes I freeze up in front of the camera . . . still . . . and have brain freezes and say things that I don't mean. But thank you for this, nevertheless, I really appreciate your help!

How does a pixie compare to a straight mute by itself?
@ChrisDavisTrumpet
@ChrisDavisTrumpet 4 жыл бұрын
Andrew the straight mute cuts more. In comparison the pixie has a softer attack.

A little taste of Clark Terry with the plunger? :-)
@ChrisDavisTrumpet

Stephen Hill Yesir!!! He was the best with the plunger, in my opinion! One time I got a quick plunger lesson from Steve Turre and he asked me who had the best plunger technique on trumpet. I paused then said Wynton Marsalis. Steve looked at me like I was crazy and said ‘expletive’ no! It’s Clark Terry!!!! 😅
