Trusting the Wind - Coastline Gliding New Zealand

Is it scary to fly at the coastline without proper outlanding options and without motor?
Yes, for sure! But it is endless fun to fly in this beautiful landscape. From the objective point of view the risk of an outlanding is marginal. You really need to check the wind forecast properly and ask the locals for advice. The wind is a constant factor, not to compare with pulsating thermals.

I did the section between Kariotahi and the Manuka Heads and back in a home built hang glider on 11 May 1980. It took 2 hours. The wind was 15 kts SW not quite at right angles to the beach. I tried to circle the lighthouse and nearly got caught out by the wind curling around into the entrance producing no lift up the cliff. At least I could have landed on the beach, climbed back up a little and resumed my journey, or that's what my emergency plan was.

i like this ridge soaring as you can really see the glider gaining altitude with the sounds. When you are in a cloud thermal its hard to visually see that you are gaining height.

Btw. having lost two friends lately (aviation accidents) I must say please be careful and most importantly emphasize to your audience that you are a professional and you have a lot of practise ... under the last video I read a comment from a new sailplane pilot who wanted to do the low pass next year (may his instructor stop him) - we all know that this might be his first and last low pass.

beautiful view, but relatively bad work with the camera, it is better to have a static camera firmly anchored than working with a hand in an airplane ..... shaking, quick changes of direction and zoom ....

Gliders don't have engines, and the sound means the pilot doesn't have to keep looking at flight instruments all the time
