Economist Robert Reich, the Clinton-era Labor Secretary and prominent Democratic pundit, gives a rousing talk on how the intersection of politics and economics led to the rise of Donald Trump and describes the concerns he shares with Republicans who fear that Trump’s way of governing is harming American institutions. Reich is the featured speaker at UC Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy’s Board of Advisors Dinner held in March 2017.

@@llewellynkereiff1235 good point. I'd be more specific - being rich is not the same as being a robber baron. Being super rich is a sign capitalism is killing itself. It's interesting how people like Fuert are not only mistaken but turning their back to the true principles of US capitalism. I really like markets! Markets are great for products - but what are products? Products are things you can choose from several suppliers, you can purchase later or you can choose not to purchase at all. Education and health, for instance, are not products. I don't want to make this longer. I first heard Richard Reich on a Adam Curtis documentary - he is clear and succinct, no BS and uses good data.

@Fuert Neigt Milton Friedman, colegue of Friedrich Heyek at the Chicago School of Economics. Did you know that in Friedman's last op ed, three months before he died, he said the Katrina was an opportunity to privatize the school systems in the affected areas? There's a fundamental problem with these ultra-liberal ideas: they assume selfishness as a universal fact. Hayek fled the Nazis in Austria and was traumatized by the experience: when States try to be a facilitator of social justice we always get Nazism (but never Sweden or Norway, of course). The problem is that this idea got so much hold in our societies that even the left started to behave like that - not think, it was behavioral absorption, not a cognitive one - and everybody started to think this is an a universal fact! What I'd like you to do is look for a book called "A View to a Death in the Morning" and read the first chapter, "The Killer Ape". It's not a book about economics, socialism or capitalism - it's a book about anthropology. "The Killer Ape" is about how perceptions are molded by the circumstances and how they change with time. It all starts with two skulls and bones ... no, it's a joke, just two skulls. It will be fun to continue the debate. I don't know if you know but some people can't leave their houses these days ... lol. I apologize for my English since I'm not a native speaker. I like capitalism and market competition - and that's why we have to keep them healthy. Did you know Germany exports around 74% of what China exports? In Germany, AFAIK, there are less companies with open capital. Schaeffler, for instance, is family owned - and a family can do long term plans while stock holders think only about the next quarter. But I'm going too far ... "The Killer Ape" is what's important - that humanoid that liked to hunt baboons and eat their brains while their body was still hot and blood was flowing through their veins! I hope that last line enticed you! ISBN-13: 978-0674937352 and ISBN-10: 067493735X

MAKES ME SAD THAT SUCH A FOOL AND CON ARTIST LIKE REICH IMPRESSES SO MANY PEOPLE. ------ IS ANYBODY READING VON MISES? OR HAYEK? OR FRIEDMAN?
@Syncopator
@Syncopator 7 жыл бұрын
Von Mises, Hayek and Friedman ignored facts and relied on some theoretical maxims that are clearly proven false. Hayek, postulated "spontaneous order" ignoring the fact that spontaneous DISorder occurs as well. Von Mises' "praxeology" is superstitious nonsense, and he took the economic calculation problem to mean that all economic planning is "central planning" and is always counterproductive, which is also nonsense. Friedman took many of these same ideas added a few of his own and then tried to push them beyond reality. They all got quite a few things right, but then overgeneralized their findings, presuming their resultant conclusions were correct, ignoring all evidences to the contrary. They have done extraordinary damage to economic thinking, having developed an economic Lysenkoism that unfortunately, still persists today because of its popularity within the looting class. That said, Reich's heart is in the right place, but he's been terribly naive and impractical. His observations are mostly correct but the optimistic solutions he's offered fly in the face of practical realities. "Assuming we survive" suggests he may finally have realized that to an extent.

The way I survived all the economic turmoils from 2008 to 2012 was working part time to sustain myself through school to graduate. I never took any of the opportunities in education, student health care, and unemployment benefits for granted. Now I am a working professional giving back to society in ways I know how and contribute to the common good.

I was working as a cashier and I'll never forget the woman who fell asleep, standing up, in front of me at the check out. She then woke up and explained she worked three jobs and was exhausted. I thanked my luck that I had a free rent situation or I would have been in the same situation.

I didn't want Bernie Sanders to be President out of anger but because he wanted the United States to become a social democracy and I want that too. Another reason was how seriously he was taking the climate crisis because of his grandchildren. I also have 7 grandchildren the same as he does so climate change is a huge issue for me. One of my top priorities. I believe he would have fought very hard to mitigate climate change and money in politics.

Growing up in the 70's by a single mom who worked in a meat market/deli at Safeway my entire childhood provided us w free healthcare, we were able to purchase a nice townhouse, we had nice cars and lived in a good part of town. I even had health issues. If that were today and her grocery store job was our soul source of income we wouldn't be buying a nice townhouse in the nice part of town. Probably couldn't afford a car. We would not be able to have the kidney surgeries I had back then. I lived through exactly what he explains. And he is absolutely right. And he's funny too!!

The Republicans and the corporate world kept seeding off each other as a reward system. In this way, they precipitated widespread, middle class wage stagnation for nearly 40 years. Not only that, the two separate entities downsized the federal government, that, in turn, made draconian cuts to social services, public education, and other programs, including essential agencies, such as the EPA, FDA, IRS, HHS, CDC... They boldly, steamrolled over our public good.

Income and wealth inequality. That is the root of extremism because money for better or worse is an indicator of power in this modern society. Power struggle is at the root of human nature. It is the definition of life; I.e: the will to exist. That is what gives rise to fight or flight contradiction. Once you have such a high level of differentiation in a society then people look for other means of empowerment. Sex, identity, religion, etc... Without a balance in power dynamics, all other aspects of human nature are bound to become distorted. This is why Romans fed the citizens of Rome for free. Nothing is more dangerous than a hungry animal.. Once you have a state that has kept its promise in return for giving up your individual sovereignty are can be assured of the minimum access to money and reduce the enormous power of the rich by taking away all that gives them that power differentiation in all aspects of life; access to education, health, judiciary (representation) then people become tolerant. They stop looking for fights to replace that sense of empowerment and then other aspects of human nature can develop like empathy, cooperation and rest that are necessary for a stable Civilization. I am not talking about communists or even socialists in their political context. I am talking about Power struggle and its necessary balance amongst the citizens. Without that, you might as well live in the wilderness and stop being a citizen and contributing as a citizen. All you care about is staying alive by hook or crook. You stop voting, you break the law, and you create gangs or tribes. You basically go back to the animal that you are and civilization breaks down.

If my memory serves me right, a work week before "overtime" kicked in during the 60's and 70's was 35 hours for workers who punched a time card. In the 80's work week became 40 hours and salaried workers no longer worked 9 to 5 but rather until the task at hand was completed. Actually the task in hand never seemed to end because most manufacturing went overseas where their workday was just beginning as we were trying to get home late in the evening. There were faxes to respond to asap, which eventually evolved into emails requiring responses. It was a bitch to be a salaried employee where you did not become rich by working 12 hours per day. I am so happy I am finally retired from that rat race.

Ami Mariscal... Wages of employees have declined in proportion to the size of government's growth. As government taxation and regulation increases, it is the "employer" who has to adjust to the costs and of course the greatest expense to him is the employee. So where do you think the adjustments are made? The employer usually raises the cost of his goods or services which then comes around and is reflected in the employee's cost of living and thus the employee would like a raise to compensate, thus the employer takes the hit from both ends, the government and the employee. You see if the employer was not the one in charge of withholding the employees taxes, workman's compensation and other regulations and expense on top of a raise,,, and all were placed on the employee's responsibility you Ami Mariscalget would get a better experience as to what the hell is going on and why you have less to show for your labor. Don't expect the slick little gremlin "Robert Reich" to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth as a common good for your own enlightenment.

@@8Pointbuck As a percentage of GDP, the size of government has been relatively steady except for stimulus spending around the Great Recession. Also, workers are already asked to do more with the same or less. That dog ain't barking.

Mr. Reich- your summation about “ maybe you could have done more?? Stop blaming yourself. Many of us will repeat those words one day. You worked within a system that was corrosive and corrupt, which it still is. The opposition would not have listened. And probably your own party might have balked as well. It is said- “timing is everything.” It was not the time. Now is the time. Regret gets us nowhere!

They also need to concentrate more on bread and butter issues rather than the culture war. I mean in practice, not just in words during campaigns. They will soon see a lot of the anger disapate. Hungry people living in quiet desperation no matter how hard they work become more racist, more xenophobic and more violent. Especially in a situation of extreme inequality when the politicians don't listen the majority but only to those at the top. Until this changes it will be a clear and present danger to democracy. It will be worse going forward because Trump brought the worst elements in our society forward and has continued to rile them up even now that he's out of office.
