When my brother and buddy's were kids it was an exciting time to go to the army surplus store. Mostly Vietnam era stuff. We bought MRE's. They were about half the size of a shoe box. Probably weighed 4 pounds, the food was packed in cans painted army green with black writing. They also came with mini packs of cigarettes. I think four in a pack. Benson Hedges, pal mall brands. Much later when my kids were little we would eat MRE's while in the mountains hunting, hiking or doing whatever. The kids were fascinated with the heater that was shown on this video. By chance MRE's became a big thing for the kids and me. It became a fun and different way to eat, visit and talk about our plans for the rest of the day. Who would think that MRE's would turnout kind of special for us but they did. The kids have started there young lives now. One is working to become a Veterinarian and the other is a Marine. He says he still likes MRE's but it gets old eating them for a long period of time. Semper Fi.

Had my first experience with the MRE package in 2003 during a military skills event in Germany organised by a US forces unit in Bad Aibling. As swiss army we don't have them. Ate it, not bad, thanks to the kind help by a gentle specialist of the US Army who most probably avoided us getting badly scalded or hurt. Finished eating, turn the next corner and there is the finish line. 20 metres after that line there was a 3 metre long barbecue with a ton of stuff cooking on it.

When I was in the Military, my favorite MRE's were the ones with the cranberries in them. Made a lot of trade offs with other guys and girls in the Military to get the MRE's with the cranberries in them. I loved those cranberries. The bread in the MRE was also good.
