I like how the opening screen for this DOS game has a 'press fire' instruction to start... without informing the player what the button would be.

Obviously you'd be playing this on a joystick. Perhaps even with a whopping THREE buttons!

Mega man is giving "bad trip" with those eyes
@Blues_Light12 күн бұрын
Of all the things I'd have expected to be played on this channel...this was definitely not among them. Edit: Since SGF's memory was hazy on what Mega Man's about: Mega Man/Rockman was always a robot. Dr. Light built him to be an assistant along with Roll. When Dr. Wily stole and reprogrammed Light's line of robots for world conquest, Rock stepped up and volunteered to be modified for combat. A theme of the series is that artificial lifeforms can be more than what some would see them as, which is nothing more than objects. Also, Wily's only ambition is world domination, though he does care for his robots just as Light cares for his own. He's certainly not a "champion of humanity", quite the opposite. He's given more depth later on, shown to care for robotkind just as Light does but sees them as superior, in fact, to mankind, and wants to bring out their full power and potential, whereas Light wants humans and robots to exist side by side and not in a servant/master relationship. We see the results of both their ambitions as the series goes on from X to MM Zero/ZX and eventually Legends. He won't read this but just wanted to give the rundown anyway because I enjoy doing so.

I will say, the smooth scrolling looks very impressive for a 1990 DOS game. Commander Keen had just come out, level scrolling on the PC was entirely new. Up until then, PC platformers had to have screen transition. This looks great for the time. I always heard this game was a disaster on the scale of the Super Mario PC version, but it looks like something I would have actually spent some time with as a kid.
@forestsavior11 күн бұрын
I played this game as a kid in the early '90s, and while definitely not a great Mega Man game, it's certainly better (well, more functional, anyway) than a lot of PC platformers from that era. And it's shockingly good for a solo dev effort, especially given it was written in the C/C++ era where all sorts of stupid memory-management errors could happen. I have never once seen this game hard crash. I understand why no one can really LOVE this game, but I'll always respect it (and its sequel, which is...well, it's not any WORSE than this game).

Capcom played really fast and loose with their Mega Man license back in the day. I remember there was a Mega Man comic series where after like four issues, the writer and artist dropped all MM characters and just turned it into an angry tirade against the publishers. And I swear that even after that, they let them put out a couple more issues.

I had this game and MM3 for DOS, before I ever touched a console. Even then my thought could be summed up as, “this ain’t right”. But it gets so many things so close to right that the problems become infuriating. If the small enemies were done better, if the enemies were a little bit slower or faster, and a few little details, it could have been “fine”. As it is, I don’t think it’s hilariously bad, even.

Ah, the PC Speaker sound effects. Did you know that these horrible screeches had no volume control, and didn't come from a speaker, but from the beige box itself? So you'd type in Play_Game.exe and horrific screeching bleeps would erupt from your computer in a vague imitation of music and sounds, scaring you senseless.
