Trying Procreate on the Oldest iPad I Could Find 😲😲

Hi everyone,
Today I wanted to try something new, let's see if you can draw in Procreate on a very old iPad model. And I mean very old! 😂😂
Now, why would I do this?😲😲 I mean I already own two different iPads Pro so why use such an old iPad? Well, I did it to encourage those of you who would like to learn how to draw, to start an illustration career but can not afford an expensive iPad. You guys, just use whatever you have or whatever you can afford! A tool is just a tool and I promise that having an expensive iPad won't make you a better artist.

The tablet I'm using here is a 2017 5th generation iPad with an Arctika stylus and the drawing app is Procreate.

I use iPad mini 2 (2013 model iPados 12.5.7) procreate older version. Works on it it's hard to do but I still love making art on it

I have an iPad since 2011, I can't even tell the model, it's so obsolete that it doesn't accept any apps, it wouldn't accept Procreate, so I draw on Ibis on my smartphone, which is about 8 years old. Amazing how it still works

I am using an iPad that dose not support Apple Pencil. I mostly draw with my finger now a days since an Apple Pencil is expensive and my stylus pen sometimes dose not work. I have a 2017 kind of iPad that I am using right now. It works fine. It’s decently perfect. I dint upgrade my iPad yet. But I will have to because this iPad dose not change all the time, it’s randomly charges. It sometimes dosing. It sometimes dose. That’s why I will upgrade soon. What do you think about this Irina?

I have an iPad mini 1st generation (2012) and an iPad 10th generation. (2022) I can attest that it’s not about the tools it’s more about skill. Sometimes I prefer drawing on older devices to refine my skills

The iPad device is not the issue here… actually the pen is the weakest part. The 6th gen iPad supports the Apple pencil 1st Gen and also the Logitech Crayon! The latter one is a nice and affordable pencil alternative. It lacks pressure sensitivity though, but has tilt support. IMHO, those are the minimum to start drawing and sketching on the ipad platform.

I am this kind of person, if I'm gonna choose an old device then I'll jump head first and choose the oldest I can possibly find 😂 Now in all seriousness, I wanted to use a really cheap stylus just cos there are so many people writing me that they absolutely can not afford an Apple device. I feel my drawing experience in this video must be pretty similar to most of the cheap devices out there. So I wanted this to somehow encourage them to start using whatever they have. But yeah, you pretty much can not beat the Apple pencil. I haven't tried the Logitech one, but I did play with the Samsung new stylus and I'm not crazy about it.

​@@illustrateria Agree with you, and I was in the situation myself! Back in the days, before there was an entry iPad 6th gen... where you had no choice to use an Apple pencil and an expensive PRO iPad. I searched for many months and was about to buy an ADONIT stylus... was it called Pixel? Probably the best none Apple solution in those days. Also not cheap and even that one had issues and drawbacks. So, I waited for the 6th Gen iPad... started with the CRAYON. After a while I got the PENCIL, because of a certain app, which required the pressure sensitivity for the contextual menus and functions. TODAY, I would not recommend any other solution, a cheaper one is going to lead into frustrations and bad experiences. TODAY, older iPads, even PROs are quite affordable! Try a used one, or refurbished with warranty! No need to buy a new one with the latest and greatest processor. iPad 6th Gen minimum... or a PRO 2nd Gen if you want a big screen. The power of those machines is more than enough for drawing and art. You may have to choose the right RAM config though. Happy drawing ;)

I used to have to do this. As I branched out more, I had to stop using my finger because they were going numb. I still haven’t gained all my feeling back. Idk if that’s common, like when someone plays guitar etc… but it’s very annoying to think that drawing nonstop with my finger may have been the reason. So I wouldn’t recommend it myself.
