they use scrapers for this. that is a bot that downloads images from the internet automatically, instead of manually searching for millions of pictures and downloading them. besides, i don't think it would be possible to ask hundreds of thousands of artists for permission and actually getting it from them, judging by how angry some artists get, i think maybe 1 in 100 would actually allow using their images for ai. so basically that is either an ai that can't generate anything besides photorealistic stuff properly, or an ai that can do that at the cost of pissing off a lot of people. btw, not trying to defend anyone, but just honestly curious - since there's a lot of actual artists, hypothetically, if there wasn't proprietary generative ai like dall-e and midjourney, but instead all of it was open-source and the result image didn't belong to anyone, would you still be angry at the fact that your art was in the dataset? again, no offence, no defence, just curious

That'll probably happen eventually because it's ability to imitate humans is already causing problems with things like identity theft and slandering, it's already being rampantly used for political purposes, it upsets advertisers since they want humans to see their ads, not bots... If it fuels you further, the current state of ai is literally just a tech bubble. It’s not even real ai, and it’s definitely not the “future” or anything techbros claim it to be. AI doesn't copy anything though. It learns from it. It can only copy if there's an overwhelming amount of the same exact image in the dataset instead of many different ones. It just learns how to abstract concepts and then recreate them. It does NOT mix and match like many say it does.

To train one, images from a dataset have associated keywords and progressively added noise, then the noise is progressively removed to try and return to the original image. The goal here is to get as close as possible to the original image, making a copy. That is what would make it more "accurate." How a completed model generates images is by taking an image that consists entirely of noise and just mix and matching for the number of steps specified. The entire process is the AI trying to copy what it has been trained to associate a certain keyword with.

There are multiple anecdotes of people doing design work for a company where the company used all their past designs over years of work to feed into an AI to generate new designs, then firing the original designer. The company can do this because under work contract the company owns all designs that the designer makes for them.

Worst part is, you need a TON of data, a LOT of time, and a bunch-a money to make an effective AI art generator. AI currently can't animate, AI currently sucks with position, size in relation, and AI can't make it's own art style (and neither could it keep it consistently). Surprise, surprise, but AI might not take over human creativity for a few hundred years. Any corporation that tries, most likely, will end up biting the dust (unless they have REALLY good writers, to which I'm pretty sure you can't use ChatGPT to write something so good that no one cares the animation of your show is garbage).

Here's a long, kinda rambling explanation as to why me and a lot of artists find AI art "bad" even as placeholders: It's not really the act of doing it that's the problem, but rather the fact that AI, no matter what you use it on, is being trained on artist's work without their consent to do so (which many artists including myself don't feel comfortable with/morally object to). AI art no matter what it's used for takes a part out of the artistic process an actual artist could do anyways. The main deal is that use of these AI programs even if it's for non commercial use supports AI and AI companies as a whole, which have pretty morally questionable/objectionable practices, and negatively impact artists. SO many of these companies have shown complete disregard for any sort of REAL artists that it makes it hard for me and many others to look favorably upon companies that want to screw over our hobbies (and a lot of artist's incomes!) and the people that support those companies in any way. Also, there's more of a moral problem people have with it too, which is about AI taking away the actual fun of creation. However it's obviously an emotional response to the matter (not one I could personally disagree with though lol). It's not my intention if this came off as rude or anything, just wanted to share WHY people like me disagree with AI in most/all forms of art including placeholder and personal works since i see a lot of people in this comment section asking. Sorry if this made no sense, this was kinda just me ranting a little bit lol 😭😭

Please read the full thing. I kinda think you may be hating on ai a bit much. I do agree that ai should never be used by big companies or for profit. I belive ai should just be used for silly things. Like those ai song cover of spongebob singing metal gear songs, or just random memes like those ai wizard memes you might have seen. Speaking of the ai wizard images, it actually helped some artist. You ever seen the the animation of wizards at a place called shmarbys? It was inspired by a collection of silly ai images. Ai is fun and that's all it should be. Just something to mess with to pass the time. I apologize if this was just headache inducing to read, but I don't like when people hate ai too much or even if they support ai too much. Also I'm sorry if this is a jumble of words. I'm not the best at writing.

I'd be in full support if that's all it was But the thing is, the way most AI (AI art in specific) gets its material is from stealing If say, a artist agreed to having an AI take their art for material, it'd be completely fine But the thing is, it doesnt, its just built on theft And for that, I just dont believe it should get any sort of support until they stop just... The augments about previous technology for making things completely fail to realize that makeing something easier and makeing something do it FOR you are different things A sewing machine still requires you to actually make something it just makes it faster Tractors do the same as horses but better but still need a driver AI just does it for you from a few sentences to the extent you don’t legally own any of the result because YOU DIDN’T MAKE IT

As somebody who makes art of many different types, there's definitely a difference between "haha look at this funny image an ai made of sonic and spongebob jumping ronald mcdonald in an alleyway with giant sledgehammers haha hehe hoho. i acknowledge that ai art isn't art and should never be used to create things for a career or anything like that, i simply like making funnies for the sake of funny, and I do not consider this "art" by any means, hehe hoho" and "LOOK AT THIS *AMAZING* PIECE OF ART!
