This is a small thing but when the Doctor said to Yaz "You're one of the greatest people I've ever known. Including my wife" i hated that so much. This era has not built any where near enough of a relationship between these two to earn that line

I think that's one of the biggest problems about this era. Watching the series 11 fam bts was really fun but on screen they didn't have much chemistry so I feel like they rely on the actors getting along as their proof of chemistry. Same with Thasmin. I think they have much better chemistry than the fam used to have and Jodie and Mandip are a great duo off screen but they're telling us that Yaz is so important and special rather than actually showing us and it ultimately falls a bit flat

Thinking about this is just kind of depressing, because there's so many key character moments in previous series that feel like any version of the Doctor would have done that 13 and only 13 wouldn't have. In The Beasts Below, 13 would probably have just made a decision, smile about it and just run away with the moral high ground praising her own solution/ethics. 11 had the decency to have this immense rush of guilt and pain and have the amazing line of "I'll need to find a different name because I won't be The Doctor anymore.' Judging by how she acts in Rosa and Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror, would 13 have been so understanding and respectful with Vincent, and been so genuinely comforting to Amy at the end? Would 13 have gone out of her way in The Christmas Carol to go back in time to show care and love to an abused child to correct the future? Probably not, she'd probably just bullshit in some technobabble gizmo solution and blow up the skyfish tower thing or something. Would 13's first instinct against Akhaten been to offer herself up first before even thinking about letting anyone else suffer? Would 13 have willingly stayed behind for 900 years in a small little town defending it to her last breath, knowing that was where she would be buried in the near future? Well, definitely not because we have the Timeless Child and running out of regenerations isn't a thing anymore, but even if that weren't the case, I just can't see it happening. What about The Doctor Falls? Would 13 staunchly refuse to live knowing she abandoned innocents, preferring to stay and fight a useless battle, knowing she cannot truly save anyone by doing so, only delaying the deaths of the people she's fighting to protect by maybe only weeks or days? I just can't imagine her doing exactly that. She would either try to find a way to sneak onto The Master's TARDIS or if she did stay behind, she wouldn't have given Nardole the line about how protecting the scared and weak children was a far harder task than blowing up silly tin men, and how only the strongest of them could do it, in fact, she'd probably leave Nardole to fight the robots and just do something else.

The thing that I still cannot find adequately explained (and I can follow the rough outline for the most part) is that Madame Ching chisels away at the Sea Dev statue (which we have established was created by the key stone) and breaks off a piece which has some sort of symbol on it. It's like she was looking for that and later I feel like it is handwaved away that it was part of what would lead her to the treasure or something? So I can buy she is on the hunt for clues I don't need that part explaining. But like...why?...Who put it there as part of the statue? How did she know to chisel it away? Why did she need to do that? What purpose did it serve? Like when they started going on about the key stone in the episode I was like oooohhhhhhhh Madame Ching is going to have accidentally unlocked this super powerful piece of rock and she has no perception of its significance but then it was another separate rock around another character's neck so idk. When people don't understand your story--even longtime fans of the series--it should be a major warning sign. And too often, the writer/director comes to the conclusion "The audience is to blame, they're not smart enough/paying close enough attention/etc." Impatience with an audience is a very, very bad trait for a storyteller to have. Because a confused audience isn't the sign that viewers are too dumb; it indicates that *you're a bad storyteller*. I was dumbfounded when a reviewer (different discussion, different series) commented, "Look, if you don't understand the plot it's YOUR fault, not the writer's. It's not his job to hold your hand and explain things to you." Say what? Of course it's his job! In fact, it's the *entirety* of his job, he literally has no other purpose! I think what makes Chibnall worse than Moffat in terms of writing, besides the fact that Moffat can at least make his episodes interesting and had Matt Smith, is that Chibnall has made writing decisions that literally changes the entire foundation of Doctor Who and can't be written off, while Moffat's are easily skippable. Like, I'm glad RTD is coming back, but I'm not viewing it as a hail Mary just yet because he now has to either work with or complexly write out the ridiculous timeless child reveal (judging by the god awful sounding prequel show announced I think it will have to be the former) Its something the show cannot ignore, and I think he knew this. Every writer from now on has to deal with the consequences of Chibnall's actions, and I think that's what pisses me off. Before, if you didn't like certain eras of Doctor Who you could just skip them and move on. Even the sprawling Gallifrey and Time War plots of classic who had cleanly marked off certain Doctors with certain storylines, such as 3's exile arc or the War Doctor's existence, with only occasional references to past events when necessary. As long as you understood the premise of the show you could hypothetically jump into any season and still follow along with very little loss. I actually started with 10 at the recommendation of a friend (basic, I know), however I wasn't told about the christmas special (which was his intro) and accidentally landed on a random early episode. But I still managed to follow along, and am currently working through classic who. That's what makes the show so great, is that even the worst writers couldn't break the whole series because it was just one interpretation, and you could still appreciate the underlying canon that sprawled over the 50+ years of this show's history. After this Doctor regenerates though, this awful plotline will still be around, and both new and old viewers, along with the writers, are going to be stuck with a 14th Doctor cleaning up the previous incarnation's mess. TL;DR, Chibnall is a selfish bastard who has burned bridges for the show no one was ever supposed to, or even allowed to touch, and it makes me mad that even announcing a great writer's return doesn't make me feel secure of the show's future because of the bs he pulled on show canon

Yeah, it is shocking to think an award winning professional screen writer signed off on that script To say the story telling followed Dream Logic would be an insult to dreams. The sea monster is bearing down on the pirate Queens ship, so they fire cannons at it which fall into the sea then are somehow spat back out and explode(?!). The monster then disappears and is never mentioned again. A Sea Devil has turned into a statue because of a magic gem, but then they arent because a bit is chipped off that isnt the gem - this lone Sea Devil being released somehow summons a boat load of them, who had been doing what exactly in the last 3 hundred years? They cant navigate by instruments, so have to use the stars, but the stars then just start swimming about randomly for no plot reason (I think this might have been a Flux plot point rewritten when this was bumped from the Flux series? Even that doesnt make sense as the Flux event occurred in the 21st C and wouldnt have affected the past) It was also a feat to make the Doctor's reasoning for not having sexy time relationships with humans sound so feeble. "I'll get hurt". hmm, you'll get hurt not doing it if thats your only objection! Beyond incompetent and I would still argue the inevitable end result of all the apologists over the years who said any complaints about plotting in Nu Who were kill joy nit pickers

I was 6 back in Series 1 and I was probably missing a lot of stuff but I understood what was going on without it having to be explained. In fact, I used to have to explain the episodes to my Grandad. So if 6 year old me can understand every episode of Season 1 without even thinking about it but 23 year old me is trying to figure out who made the Key Stone and why it has the power to flip the magnetism of the Earth around and so on..... Yeah it can't just be me.

Last I heard, Doctor Who had an arc going on about a battle between space and time. How did that turn out? It sounded like the most bizarre thing ever.
@boogiebot22792 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah that thing destroyed almost all of the universe, then the doctor stopped it via contrived bullshit. The writing, characterisation and humour was all consistent with the rest of this era, that being abysmally bad. How did the universe get fixed you ask? Umm… it didn’t and the show just pretends like it did? There was no attempt to try and explain this btw, it’s just accepted that the universe is fixed again.

As someone who has nothing against Chibnall and can appreciate several episodes of his era, this episode sucked. The editing was bad, Thasmin was made canon on both sides even though the Doctor never showed romantic feelings towards Yaz ( seriously, are you trying to convince me Yaz is as interesting as River ? Fan service isn't always a good idea), the CGI was not as good as the impression given by the trailer, Madame Ching is a very interesting historical figure yet she's wasted here and another character sacrifices himself for the Doctor without her feeling any remorse. It could have passed in the middle of a series as a filler, but when you are waiting for months for a single special it's very disappointing, especially since it's the last episode before Jodie Whittaker's regeneration episode. It's not worth the watch, it doesn't seem important to the finale except maybe for the Thasmin stuff.

It was kind of a mess, but I did like that part where 13 and Yaz were bathing that stray dog in the TARDIS and when the fleas jumped off Yaz collected them and rolled them into a joint, and 13 said "Yo, dawg, we're smoking your fleas!" Then as the dog shook dry the suds caused the console to spark and the episode started over.

I think the yaz/doctor relationship is getting real weird. All the male doctors since the revival have had some form of romance or kiss but as soon as the doctor's female they can't seem to commit to it. I don't even like the doctor's weird relationships but it feels especially obvious that they don't want to commit to a 'lesbian' romance. The end scene on the beach I genuinely thought might result in a kiss, even if it's a pity kiss. I've been quite lenient on the Jodie Whitaker era. I acknowledge it's shit but I've at least enjoyed watching it. But I think this episode might be the worst. It straight-up feels like entire connecting scenes are missing, but then they'll dedicate a scene to characters explaining something the audience literally just witnessed. It's genuinely bizarre the decisions that have been made.

Not that I feel much of an incentive to defend this franchise, currently, but the 'trap that couldn't have been' could be down to bad editing, either because stuff got cut out due to time constraints, or just turned out to be unusable in the final edit. Not saying I support the return of Tennent return theory but. . . . if any of the companions from Whittaker were to be kept on for a Tennent return. Which one would you think would work better with him as an actor? Would you want him to return? If so, would it be as a continuation of the 12th Doctor personna. Or would you want him to be a whole new different kind of Doctor with merely David Tennent as the actor ?
