I own a z51 vette. Video is accurate; I can promise you they are setup to drive 70yr olds to the golf course. The car is soft and the bushing deflection makes turn in unpredictable. They have lots of grip, but only once the car is set in a corner. Making them ‘dance’ like this gets the car very unsettled and light. The Active Handling is THAT intrusive, although I don’t like running it; the car needs to slide more to rotate imo. In unbiased comparison, I also own a Flyin Miata tweaked NB, which is about 100x more confidence inspiring and tossable. I’ve owned a variety of track focused cars; they all put the vette very low on my list in stockish form. I’d like to ditch the mono leafs for coil overs and see how it changes. I expect to be pleasantly surprised...still likely need Delrin control arm bushings tho to get some feel out of it. Great cruiser, shitty tight course racer.

yea this gen of corvette sucks still no japanese cars were close to it N.a if you want to be all purest, z51 package comes with cheapo stiff shocks (and if you bought used defiantly needs to go after 100k) so simple coil over would allow better suspension tune. z/51 package comes with 3:15 rear diff ratio witch is not anything close to Japanese cars . final drive ratio with will change alot of the drive experience mainly acceleration

@HankyGT
@HankyGT 6 жыл бұрын
The Z51 isn’t a bad package really. The 3:15 you are referring to is for auto cars. I have an 03 Z51, which includes a power steering cooler, the Z06 front monoleaf, a specific rate rear leaf, carry over z06 shocks (larger body) along with the metal end links and sways. The c6 z51 received basically the same but included larger drilled rotors, the shorter 2-3 gearing of the m12 z06 transmission and I think trans coolers on the later c6 cars. It’s always been an under the radar package until the c7; which really gives a lot for the option box. All 6spd cars get a 3:42 final drive however. It IS a bit long on tight stuff no doubt. Vettes are awful for that, and get worse with the tr6060 cars. You obviously need a certain final drive to achieve the top end numbers these cars can hit, and within the stock rpm range. Many imports use gearsets closer to 3:90-4:30; although they need the tq multiplier and generally have lower top speeds. My car with 4:30s would be a handful, as it’s already loose through all of 2nd; which is around 70mph if you can drive out the gear spinning. The ring gear starts to get weaker as you make them taller too. A 4:10 is the highest offered by Corvette trans builders. I’ve driven a c5z and it was really good vs a base; or even my own car stock - most of that due to wider tires and non runflats. They also behave best near stock ride height. The turn in is still an issue. It’s all a trade off for NVH vs performance. The c7 actually uses a 5 chassis link in each wishbone to prevent against deflection without increasing harshness with a poly or delrin bushing. It’s quite genius and I’d like to see it adapted to the older cars. C5+ chassis is actually quite phenomenal. It just needs the right accents to make it work. That said, it’s never going to drive like a short wheelbase car, or a 2300lb car. Wheelbase is rotation. It feels great when it’s tight, but you need a longer one for stability at high speed tracks. It’s all give and take. I guess I’m blessed to be able to enjoy both. I also understand why the carbon monoleaf is there. It’s all the weight down across the lowest point of the car. Also makes for easy height adjustments unloading and loading cars. I kinda want to try a set of T1 bars and good shocks, but it wouldn’t be effective at my desired ride height. Coilover setups on vettes invert the shock and use a shorter, wider body to increase travel. I think the c6 already has 3/4” over the c5 there. Makes a big difference. That and too low puts the roll center underground... but at this point my reply is already too windy lol

It’s in the culture.. In America drag races have been strong for years.. in Japan they have a lot of mountains and winding roads, So their cars are made for light weight power and hammering corners.. not that any car can be set up to do both but in general I believe this to be true.. but I’m no one sooo🤷🏻‍♂️
@rockytalavera3399
@rockytalavera3399 3 жыл бұрын
I believe a awd WRX or Mitsubishi would be the best of both worlds. Although they may lack the straight power of a traditional drag car they can be pretty quick on the launch. Although I feel they are built to be a little more meant for tight corners and such. As all AWD do quite well in sharp corners where light quickness is needed. That may also be an advantage in drag racing, that hard fast launch could give them the gap they need and hopefully fix the lack of power. There is also the point of who’s driving and any possible mods to the cars. If anyone comments please bear in mind I’m 15 and seriously into cars and such. So please don’t destroy my soul with the “He PrObAbLy ThInKs SuPrAs HaVe oNe ThOSuNd HoRSe PoWeR StOcK” I appreciate all cars and try and have unbiased opinions about what is better. A drag car isn’t meant to take the hard sharp corners of Japans mountain roads. Small quick little high rev cars aren’t meant for racing in a straight line where power matters I wrote a lot so I’ll stop now. Have a good day to anyone who’s sees my comment!!!

@@rockytalavera3399 I don't think 'all AWD do well in sharp corners' is necessarily true. In reality, AWD cars do understeer more than RWD, but some AWD cars are programmed to send power between the front and the back to reduce these issues. RWD is what really gets around sharp corners the best.

100% Agree, having driven stock base model C5 and C6 Corvettes. You really don't want to push anywhere near the limit on a public road, way more horsepower than PREDICTABLE grip/handling/brakes. Also having driven an AP2 S2000, you can lean on that car HARD and the handling is confidence inspiring, which kind of fits the MO of the engine, drive it like you're trying to blow it up.

I've never driven a c6 and I'm wondering if they just don't like the corvettes... I recently bought a C5 that I've been dreaming to be able to afford since high school when it came out. I honestly feel like it handles pretty well even for a base 350hp fastback. Of course it has some tasteful mods :) It was a hard decision from the new brz, s2000 ap2, 350z... Yes I'm a jdm lover joining the darkside. Lol Corvettes are amazing sports car that is relatively cheap to modify in terms of power. Put a CAI in a k20z1 and you'll make 5hps. Put a vararam in a ls1 and easily makes 15-20hps. It's insane. Anyways, redundant to make it this long. I am a lover of all sports cars.

+Jessie Pascual The C6 base was soft. They favor very stiff suspensions for their togue driving because they need responsiveness. The stock c6 suspension and tires had none of that. A Z51 or Z06 would have been another story altogether. Is your C5 a Z51?

+maverick223 no I wished! I can't touch my vette yet, wife is already mad I bought one, selfish of me since I have 3 kids haha but I knew I could afford and still feed the kids. I'll start adding more mods once I get a newer gen sequoia or a 14+ durango rt. idk if you've driven any corvette but they are scary on low gears and hard paddling. I always lose control when I leave it to first gear make a hard turn while gassing it like hell. my type S want not that wild to tame... felt like it went where ever I position the wheel.

@ITrustDoubt If you look at it, and know what you're talking about you'll realize he is deliberately trying to upset the car. Note that he is constantly lifting and stabbing to get the car to shift its weight. Then he comments about how the nanny gets in the way in an odd way. He is deliberately not driving fast, but rather testing how the car reacts to ham handedness. Which it does very poorly. The vette has a good distribution, but the front shocks are a little dull, same with the springs, so if you play with it gently it will still kick its tail. As he says if the car had a rhythm it would be 1,2 345, 6,7, 89, 10. This is not saying its a bad performance car, but rather that it isn't an easy car to control at its limits. The car has an impressive amount of grip, but it becomes a handful when it reaches the end of that grip. As such since the course isn't long enough and loose enough to actually reach the limits of the car, he had to do a few tricks to reach the limits and see how it reacts. Hence upsetting the balance of the car deliberately.
@Jukkaimaru
@Jukkaimaru 9 жыл бұрын
Dani Kimbro This is also an *extremely* early model year for the C6; the very first in fact. The later model years improved the suspension a great deal. Particularly the ones from 2010 to the end of the C6 run.
@mizinoinovermyhead.7523
@mizinoinovermyhead.7523 8 жыл бұрын
Yet none of them changed the fact that the Vette tends to have lots of low end torque and not enough rubber to handle it. As I said ham handedness will cause the car to behave poorly. As you reach the end of the grip in a vette you are going very very fast, combine that with the fact that the engine is very torquey and you get a car that likes to kick the tail very quickly and at times erratically. It also has a transaxle, which means that the middle of the car is virtually weightless, with two hunks of steel at either end. Thus it tends to have some of the characteristics of a midship car when pushed to the limits, snappier oversteer is one of those characteristics.
@Jukkaimaru
@Jukkaimaru 8 жыл бұрын
Dani Kimbro Well, being hamfisted in more or less *any* car will tend to make it misbehave; the C6 isn't special there. The later models tended to ship with suspension improvements and better stock rubber to kill that tendency to snap the tail. Now, if only the LS7 engine didn't have those out-of-spec valves...
@mizinoinovermyhead.7523
@mizinoinovermyhead.7523 8 жыл бұрын
Lol this is true, but while cars like the Evo, and GTR, and a few others tend to not punish you as much for being a putz this one does. Take for instance the 911, the old ones will try and kill you if you attempt to unload the rear during a corner or something similar to that. The new ones on the other hand are far more forgiving and predictable, they are ones that you can sit back a bit more and relax while you drive even while driving fast. A corvette driven at its limit is a bit of twitchy prospect and you have to be far more on the ball to get the same speed out of it as you do a 911 or something like that. Not really a worse car, just more of a handful.

2:03 yeah but the S2000 held the highest number of horsepower per liter of around 107 horse power per liter, also had half the wheelbase meaning that at a tougue like gunsai (the one in the video) it would supremely dominate in twisty corners, and it also had double wish bone suspension which for 1999 through early 2000s, it was insanely good for a small roadster. Also the s2k could rev to 9k and actually had an automated soft top so while Chevy was trying to “save” weight by removing the motor, the s2k even with everything still was miles lighter. And to top it all off, the corvettes v8 was “basically” mounted behind the front drive axle, but since it’s a monster v8, it extended past the axle, meaning the front-mid mounting didn’t help with better weight distribution which ultimately kept the weight 51.8-48.2, while the s2k had a smaller motor that was perfectly front-mid mounted, and a perfect 50-50 weight distribution. Oh and did I mention it had freaking VTEC?!?!? I also feel like it’s also unfair to compare a fucking s2k with a corvette MUSCLE car... s2k just outclasses it in every way, and the only way the s2k loses to the corvette is in its short wheelbase. It’s so short, it’s basically like an Mr2/Miata, where if it’s not driven smoothly and correctly, it will snap on you, and you will spin out. Oh and of course it will lose out on the straights

Idk why the c6 and S got compared here. The S is loads of fun on a tight road where you can ring it to death and have a great time. The Vette would be more suited to a more open road imo especially in stock form. That being said, a lot of people hate on the S here. There's a reason why a clean s2k is worth north of 20k still. It's an amazing car for what it is not to mention the interior has aged far better than the Vette has. The S was built to be driven and that's it. Very minimal dash and overall very well put together. Yes torque is a lot of fun, but so is pulling hard to redline at 8 or 9,000 rpms with short gears. Both very different cars with very different engineering mindsets.

One thing I've noticed from watching this stuff is that there's a uniquely Japanese style of handling. Cars like Silvia, S2000, etc tend to have a ton of front grip relative to the rear, which is important for tight and low-speed handling such as touge or autocross. You see corners attacked with a lot of attitude, no-counter 4-wheel drifts, etc. Western cars tend to have relatively higher rear grip and don't take kindly to higher slip angles. They're tuned for the relatively higher speed, wider-corner roads and tracks found outside of Japan, with a big pile of horsepower to control. This made Japan the perfect place for the sport of drifting to originate, because elsewhere these high-slip techniques had mostly gone extinct when bias-ply tires were phased out. A few lunatics would hang it out with their 930 Turbo, E30 M3, or C4 Corvette, but it was understood that doing so was the slow way around. Well, if you were trying to go fast on Irohazaka in an S13 in 1992, a spot of low-angle drifting was probably the fast way. Hence this disconnect when the cultures meet. The C6 Corvette feels like an absolute tugboat on Gunsai, even as it dukes it out with 997s back home. Meanwhile, the S2000 and MR2 harvest course records on Japanese touge roads, but smash backwards into the tire walls on track days in America.
