I accidentally ordered a spiral wrapped black hole challenger 2 years ago thinking I was ordering an offshore spinning rod. I loved the rod so much I bought another 7' MH version of it paired with a Fin Nor Marquesa 12. No lie the rod is sensitive enough to bucktail fluke inshore, and strong enough to jig 12oz jigs for cod and pollock and everything in between. I believe there is also video of the same rod catching YFT up to 120lb. I get asked about the guides every so often. I am sold on the concept. I think the rod weighs in at 6oz without a reel. Its truly a joy to use, even with heavy lead.

Not conventional but I have a Shimano Trevala that brings me similar action and joy. Super thin and light rod yet rated for 5oz and 20-50#. I have used up to 8oz of lead or similar Bucktail for Fluking on party boats. Great action on the hook up compared to the telephone poles I was accustomed to prior. Awesome stuff as always Mr. Skinner!

Hi John, love your videos and your books. Is there any chance you could do a video on your boat? I'm hoping to buy my first boat sometime soon and the setup you have looks PERFECT for fishing. Small enough not to be a fortune and big enough to be stable and safe out in the ocean. I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Have a great 4th!

got one of these from J+H mostly based on this review. I am in awe of this rod. If it does what I think its going to do as well as I think for rock fish and ling cod at the Farallon Islands in northern california. The rod feels so damn light it feels like a freshwater medium bass rod. But it has backbone that defies how the rod feels in hand. Thanks for your content John. And if any of your followers havent tried J+H tackle yet give them a shot, Josh helped me with my orders and the process was effortless.

Hi john recently discovered your channel with a friend of mine love your videos and advice. I actually ended up buying the 6 foot 8 inch version of this with a shimano 501 hg to have a new setup. I used it once for porgy fishing so far ( I admit the line I was using was over kill 30lb braided) but I mainly bought it for the bigger fish and wanted to get a feel for it, loved everything about it the feel, the action, everything. I am not going this weekend but I'm going on the 17th for ling or blues/stripers will update you on how it performs with them. Other than that thank you for you're videos I will be taking more advice from you.

Great video, thanks! Quick Q - Tsunami put out two new lines of rods in the past year, these (the slow pitch jigging rods) and their Slim Wave line. Both seem to be similar construction (these being acid wrapped and faster action seem to be the main differences). Have you used both, and if so - any preference between the two?
@JohnSkinnerFishing7 жыл бұрын
I have white Slimwaves, but they're not acid wrapped. If you need a little backbone to bounce a jig, I'd go with the slimwave. The slow pitch rods have more bend toward the tip, but incredible power for such little weight. What's your application?
@JohnNanasBrooklyn7 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of using it for heavier (>1.5 oz) bucktails either while fluking or for bass/blues. I have a couple of the slow pitch rods, which are great but seem to be a little too fast to work a bigger bucktail effectively. Not sure how heavy I could go with a Slimwave either though, the ratings claim 2-6oz but not sure a 4-5 oz bucktail would work.
@carloss48197 жыл бұрын
John, you talk about the line weight on a rod, but not the lure weight. Are you implying that for bottom fishing lure weight doesn't matter? Because that rod is rated to 5 1/4 ounces. Thank you

I used a 6-ounce weight in this vid.

You talked about making your bottom with a weight of some sort that can also catch fish. Here in FL we use what we call a "Grocery Getter" rig. It's a 3-way with 2 small squid skirts over smaller hooks (1/0, 2/0) tipped with squid and FishBites (targeting Trigger and Porgies) with an 8oz Alien glow-in-the-dark jig for the weight. This jig is hit as much as the rest of the baits on the rig and as the name implies, produces plenty of table fare! www.tackledirect.com/c-and-h-alien-jigs.html
