That’s EXACTLY what I thought. I’m a Ford guy and I’ve owned numerous F series trucks through the years up to and including the vaunted 7.3 Powerstroke diesel. I still enjoy multiple Mustangs for my performance fix, but I’ve drifted away from the Ford trucks. I had numerous problems with the supercharged 5.4 in my 02 Lightning, and even had problems with my Coyote powered 16 F150 Supercrew. I’m now handling my truck duties with a 17 year old Toyota with 4.7 V8 and 4x4. It’s coming up on 300,000 miles yet has less creaks and rattles going down the road than my 13,000 mile new Performance Pack Mustang GT. Ford has nothing on Toyota’s build quality that’s for sure, and despite approaching 300k, I wouldn’t hesitate to drive the Toy across country. Does the new F150 have better tech ? Yes I’d say in feature and tech it won the comparison, but XL versus Limited trim at the same price point, and factoring in build quality and reliability I’d take the Toyota and laugh my way past a quarter million miles :)

I come from a Ford family. I even drove an '78 in Ranger in high school. All of them had issues at or before 100,000 miles. I just figured all trucks were like that. My Dad was always replacing something, engine parts, transmission, fuel pumps, etc.. However, in 2008 my husband and I got a new '08 Tundra and now almost have 300,000 miles on it and the engine, transmission etc is still original. We haul about 4,000 lbs on it all of the time and it's still got power and runs like the day we got it. Ford still has a home in my heart for the memories but I don't think we could ever go back to another brand of trucks after experiencing the unbelievable reliability of a Toyota Tundra.

@@TheSheepDogPatriot1776 I agree, the F150 isn't too bad. My Dad has a super nice 2017 F150 Lariat which is nice but it's needed several parts replaced and it's about 4 years old. We also had an F150 before we got our Tundra but it had it's issues too, and we only had it for 2 years, leaky this or that. It was in the shop at least 3 times a year at only 60,000 miles. But our Tundra hasn't been in the shop for almost 7 years now except for maintenance. Before that, we had some upgrades done like custom lights, etc. I don't think that counts as being in the shop though. We trek across rough dirt and muddy roads when deer hunting etc. I mean, it's still got everything original except our Bilstein shocks. I still can't believe it. I'm almost convinced that it will make it to million miles. 🤞🙂

I've had many brands over the years. The ONLY one that allowed me the distinct "pleasure" of wearing down my shoe leather was a Toyota. (No cell phones back then.) Had more Fords than any other. One minor problem, on one car, noted and fixed within the first 10 days of driving. My comment, and yours, are anecdotal and really mean almost nothing in the long run. The realty is that the consumer will spend their $$$ on what they want. Have a junk product and people will stop buying it. So who are consumers spending their truck $$$ on? Generally speaking, Ford will sell as many full sized trucks in 6 weeks as Toyota will sell in a whole year. Oh and speaking of '08 Tundra, --- have you had the frame replaced? (I'm not joking.) Here you can see it being done in time lapse of about 2 minutes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJK1cpmerJ2NaqM Search "Toyota Frame Rust Recall", you can find lots of articles about it.

I've always been a Ford guy and I love F-150s but if you're going to keep your pickup for 10+ years then the Tundra is the one to have. It's a simple truck that just works. The gas mileage with the Tundra is a bummer but I'd rather pay for gas than repairs.
@daniele.644
@daniele.644 2 жыл бұрын
This is my dilemma in 2022 with national gas prices averaging well above $4.00 a gallon, and trying to decide between a used F-150 and a used Tundra. As I calculate it, at current fuel prices with the Tundra I'd be spending over $3,800 more than the F-150 over 100,000 miles of driving in fuel costs alone. What are the odds I'll have $3,800 in repairs on the Ford considering I drive 20,000-25,000 miles a year? Repairs suck, and you do have to factor in the cost of your truck being out of commission for a few days while broken down as well, but it seems like I might spend that money with the Ford, but I'll definitely spend it with the Toyota. Kinda leaning Ford for that reason.

Tundra is also simplest truck without many bells and whistles to brake and give you headache. If you really work your trucks HARD and drive lots of miles you need a Ford F-150 unless you have extra money to throw away. I get 300k miles+ out of my F150's before I replace them for another one. I drive 90% of the miles on Texas gravel/oil field back roads, which are rough and dusty to wet and muddy in places so I use my 4x4 several times a DAY. I feel like a person who drives on the highway and takes care of the F150 could easily get a whole lot more miles out of them than I do. I normally average 17-18mpg. I like the Toyotas but they just can't compete with the Ford in cost of ownership divided by the total miles driven, not even close. I had several issues but my main problem was with the 4x4 servo/switch whatever so my 4x4 hardly ever worked which benched it for me because it spent a lot of time in the shop. It also averaged about 10-11 mpg. So in 180k miles, the Toyota had already cost me more than what it usually cost me to drive 300k miles in the F-150 and the Toyota brakes and front end were fixing to need some real money thrown at it so it had to go. The Chevy couldn't handle it either, it had 2 transmissions replaced and the A/C went out 3 times in only 240k miles. I traded BOTH the Toyota and the Chevy off before reaching the 300k target due to time and money loss. They simply cost TOO much to operate. On my F-150's you have to check the front wheel bearings and blow the radiator/intercooler out once a year and you're good, but I also change ALL the fluids, hoses, belt, and trans filter every year which for me is about 75K-80k miles. Like I said, my miles are ROUGH. Ford has just ran completely away with the 1/2 ton truck market especially in technology for the work truck owners. More power with more fuel economy and reliability equals lower cost of ownership i.e. profit$$. When everyone finally goes with the more efficient turbo technology in their 1/2 tons, Ford will be over a full DECADE ahead of them, maybe two, and Ford isn't looking back.

Just picked up a CPO 2018 Tundra 4x4, 50k miles and so far I’m happy with it. Yes, it’s basic when compared with its counterparts but so is the maintenance on them. This would be my third 4x4 vehicle and reading the manual, it does say to switch it to 4HI once a month to avoid issues with the transfer case actuator becoming seized or such. As a consumer, I see Ford’s value proposition in terms of bang-for-buck. The 3.5 EcoBoost blows the iForce 5.7 out of the water in performance and economy. As a mechanic, the 5.7 iForce is a durable proposition on Toyota’s part. Yes, it’s MPG isn’t necessarily stellar (I manage 14-15 mpg in city) but not many have come across with engine problems. What I have seen is a solid number of 3.5 EcoBoost engines with a failing water pump. For those folks who do not know, the water pump of the EcoBoost engine is located inside the engine and ran by the timing chain. When the pumps fail, the least of the issues is catching it on time and having to open the engine timing covers, remove timing components to change the water pump out, then reassemble the timing components (lots of labor hours involved = $$$$). The worst I’ve seen is an internal leak of the water pump (nothing out of the weep hole externally) and essentially the coolant and oil mix and the engine ends up in a bad shape requiring replacement or rebuild at best. Yes, the likelihood of a water pump failing on a new truck at or under 100k is low, however, paying $2000+ for a water pump regardless of how old the truck might be is a terrible proposition, especially for those folks who cannot afford a repair bill of that size. All in all, I recognize the Tundra is visibly underpowered but unmatched in reliability. P.S.: A Magnuson supercharged Tundra will give you north of 500HP and TQ (it’ll run you $6k but hey, it’s an option if you can foot the bill).

Nice comparison. I actually bought that Tundra model. It is interesting, I have all of the things you mentioned that your unit didn't have like bed lights, etc. The one thing that mine did not come with was the sunroof, but I like it that way. This is my third Tundra and probably my last one. I come from a family of Ford truck owners and always thought that I wanted one as well. But when I picked up my first gen Tundra, I was hooked. Every truck model has its pros/cons, but the one that fits your needs is the best one. Oh, and OEM tow mirrors are available with signal/markers lights. About the only thing I wish that Toyota would have kept in my 3rd gen was the tranny cooler. I know what the Toyota engineers say, but I think the $400 in parts would have been nice to have this system in place as a safeguard. I recently viewed your towing video comparisons in the CO hills. Anyways, I appreciate your videos.👍👋

This whole debate and these comparison videos of which truck is better gets old. Just buy what vehicle that appeals to you, and leave it at that. Everyone is different and will have different tastes and needs, that's never going to change. For me I don't want all the new tech, I just wanted something I can run for the next 20 years with little issues, so I went with a 2014 Tundra. And 7 years later and 120K I haven't had to do a thing with it other then brakes and tires. And as far as mpg, if you bump your tire pressure up 3-5 psi (more in the front then rear) from the factory specs, find roads that you can cruise at 40 to 50 mph (seems to be the sweet spot) I average 17 to 18 mpg and have gotten 20mpg a few times. If you like fords then buy a ford, or if you like Toyota then buy a Toyota, but don't bash others for wanting to be different from what you like.

Exactly. The hybrid technology Toyota will put in the Tundra is already refined and perfected due to them using it for decades in the Prius/other vehicles. Toyota is late to the game for a reason. They’re not going to put some crazy loaded truck out there and sacrifice their reliability status. Toyota keeps things practical and simple. They also don’t depreciate like all hell like American trucks do. I work for Toyota as a car salesman. People come in with their American trucks and SUVs to get trade values and get PISSED at what they’re offered. When I see a customer with a Tundra or Tacoma trade I automatically think “okay, this guy has positive equity!”. It’s just a reality that most American truck/SUV enthusiasts don’t want to face. There is a reason Toyota’s hold their value so well and why banks will give better interest rates on Used Toyota vehicles. It’s not arbitrary.

Big Toyota fan, I own a 2020 Tacoma. Have had many F150's in the past for towing horse trailers. I've always wanted a Tundra, but just can't due to poor MPG's. I probably would go with the F150 again if I needed a half ton. I am very interested in the next Tundra, hopefully they can move it forward in technology and maintain some of its reliability. I would note that even the third gen Tacoma took a couple years to work out all the bugs after its initial release and it really isn't all that sophisticated. So I think Ford has a fairly long term advantage in technology which Toyota will need to work hard to catch up with.

Not to mention that the power the tundra produces is more than you'll ever need. Also, try putting 1900lbs in the bed of each truck and see which one actually handles it better. I'm stoked for the official release of the 2022 Tundra for specs, and engine choices. With a solid hybrid option, the fuel economy disadvantage the Tundra's have been know for (albeit most don't care) wouldn't be a disadvantage anymore. That, paired with the upgrade of the archaic tech and interior and such will hopefully be a home-run for Toyota. Here's to hoping.

I eventually sold it for financial reasons. I’m on my Third Tundra. (2015 1794) I came back to it again and got a good deal on mint condition with 80k. FX4 trim and the 3.7 litre naturally aspirated V6 was something I was looking at once, for a tasty under $50,000 truck treat, but I love how you equipped yours. I prefer Toyota for cars, midsize trucks and some SUV/CUVs, and this Tundra (and especially for it's age of design) is still a great truck, but there's a reason the F-150 has been the best selling vehicle in North America the last forty-one (41!) years. My dad bought an 07 tundra brand new off the lot. It was the best one on the lot too! 35 inch mud tires, a 3 inch lift, custom rims, a little bash bar with a skid plate, a tonneau cover and the box was rock guarded. All factory upgrades! My dad works in the oil patch in Central and northern Alberta, that means just getting to the rig site involves going through deep mud and water, sometimes a downed tree, that tundra was abused its entire life!! All it needed was oil changes, brakes, tires, fluid flushes, it did need a new wiring harness because rodents love the soy based plastic coating on the wires! It never got stuck, in mud or snow, it never broke down, at one point we had a big 24.5 foot yamaha twin engine jet boat, the tundra pulled it like it wasn't even there!! After Xmas 2011 we were stuck in kelowna cause the Roger's pass was shut down due to bad weather. After a week they opened up the pass again. So we left!! Sure enough the pass had about a foot of snow accumulated on the road, while everybody else was going slow we were going the speed limit! After a while we saw howitzer's on the road side, and avalanche control vehicles hauling ass down the pass. They were doing like 40 over the speedlimit and my dad was like, they know something I don't, I'm gonna follow them! So we did 140km/hr til we hit golden, sure enough we were the last vehicle let through that night. By the time we hit Calgary the sun was coming up, and 1.5 hours later we were back home. We never lost traction, we didn't have a single close call. I blame the luggage in the bed lol, it had to have weighed 500lbs or more! My dad had that truck until 2021, it was driven hard, never babied, it had 450,000km on the odometer, and still, it never left him stranded, stuck in the mud and snow, never! The back bumper was a bit rusty, it had been since 2012! The body and paint were still good, and Aside from that it was ready to take another 450k km of abuse lol! It had the 5.7L I-FORCE v8, it was horrible!! Absolutely terrible on gas!! It had a digital fuel Guage which told you the fuel level in how many kilometers til empty. With a full tank it had at most 497km til empty, and in winter time it was in the 480's. However if you bought a tundra, it wasn't for its fuel consumption. It was for reliability, longevity, and that the truck was simple. The engine design too, it may be simple, sure, but it made 381hp and 401ft/lbs of torque and still lasted forever!! Toyota, even today still uses the exact same 5.7 v8 that was in my dad's 2007 tundra! The engine has been in production for 15 years now, and Toyota hasn't changed or redesigned a single part on it. Also, the 5.7 i-force is made in the USA at the Toyota factory in Huntsville, Alabama!!

Low costs?? Did you see the fuel economy he spoke of? Fed's say their model shows Tundra costs about $1000 more per year to operate than a 3.5L EB Ford. (Not the hybrid, the regular 3.5L model.) Their model uses a fuel cost of $2.85/gal. AAA says average cost today, nationally, is $2.886/gallon. The extra fuel costs alone, could equate to $2000 in repairs every couple of years, and most trucks don't need that level of repairs.

Not a universal design signature, but a lot of trucks with 2WD of a certain weight class will have 5 bolt hubs vs 4wd versions of the same truck will come with 6 bolt hubs. On the 'Yota, I sure wish they'd keep the V8 option and electrify the front end for hybrid power; I've thought about doing my '07 like this as a 4WD conversion, and to see if adding electric power would lighten the load on the V8 for some extra mileage.

I just bought recently a 2021 F-150 with the 3.5 eco boots engine (avoided the power boost option due to high price tag in Canada) and couldn't be happier. I can however understand the folks who comment about reliability and how loyal they are to the tundra for that reason as I've owned it's smaller brother the Tacoma at one point myself but when the family came around I went to a larger truck. What I found is bang for buck the F-150 is the better deal and while reliability isn't Ford's strong suit and any automotive manufacture can have bad batches ford is always innovating while Toyota is seriously falling behind in both tech and saftey. The biggest reason for me to avoid a tundra is the fuel economy, I'm sorry but no reliability rating long term is worth the amount of money you'll spend on fuel over the lifetime of the truck at 18L per 100 kms (Canadian spec for any American reading this) absolute pig on fuel especially since I live in British Columbia and we some of the highest prices in Canada for gas. Just remember as long as you maintain the truck and not abuse it thinking your invincible (get a beater if you drive like that) you'll get many years out of a truck
I've owned both, let's compare: 2022 Toyota Tundra vs 2021 Ford F-150
