If you can get away with the 7.3, its the way to go. Don't have to deal with all the def/emissions crap they put on these modern diesels that makes them unreliable if you don't spend a small fortune to keep up with the maintenance. Side note, I have no idea how the EPA thinks the diesel emissions systems help the environment. Think of the entire supply chain behind the emissions equipment and def production. Could accomplish the same reduction in emissions with a simple clean tune and avoid the crazy supply chain. Makes no sense to me, but maybe someone can explain the numbers behind the def system stuff.

Depends on where you live. If you don’t have these extreme hills, the 1/2 ton is fine. I have towed for 45 years. I said with the current 1/2 tons I would never tow over 7,000 lbs and any more I would get a 3/4 ton. Well I have to change that to 8,000 lbs. especially where I live. I have a 2021 F150 PowerBoost Lariat FX4 with a small lift/level with Roush/Fox suspension levelling kit and 34” tires. I have a fibreglass canopy on the truck as well. I bought an Arctic Fox travel trailer that’s just under 8,000 lbs loaded. I have had no issues, even yesterday with temperatures around 90 - 91 F. The truck didn’t overheat, engine, transmission, no overheating. There were minor hills but it’s going to reach over 100 degrees this week and I will be towing still. I have full synthetic in the engine. The issue I run into are the huge winds we can get here, but they do reach a point where it’s ridiculous to even think of towing a travel trailer in, so you park and wait for the wind to die down. No point blowing over. I have responded even to dually 1 ton trucks pulling travel trailers having been blown over in the winds here. So far so good. The truck is stable even in a cross winds and the brakes are strong enough for the trailer I have, which itself has very good brakes. I would never use a 1/2 ton with 8,000 lbs in the hilly country they live in here on the video mind you. I just really dislike even 3/4 ton trucks for the ride. I have a seriously bad back so any length of time in a GM full size truck (terrible seats) or any of the HD trucks can be very painful. I would chose a smaller more aerodynamic trailer and give up 4 season camping. I just still don’t see towing 10,000 lbs with a 1/2 ton. You need something much more stout.

@@realbigtuna667 The oil doesn't need to reach a temperature where it begins to break down to cause serious issues. Oil that's operating above the temperature it was rated for will become too thin and fail to provide an adequate film thickness to lubricate and protect moving surfaces inside the engine the main bearings being a big one. Also, extreme oil temperatures can negatively affect the anti-friction teflon-like coating on the main bearings, causing the material to break down or wear away (if the oil viscosity is too low due to extreme oil temperatures). @tfltruck consider this: A F-150 has 350mm brake rotors and a CGVW of around 17,000 lbs = 48 lbs per MM of brakes. I’d be curious if you locked out any of the upper gears on the F150. Even in tow haul, the transmission likes to upshift or run the highest gear for as long as it can. With the 10-speeds, 8-9-10 are all overdrive gears. I’ll tow our 8500-9k travel trailer up Vail and on 285. Usually Vail I’ll run 235-240 water temp and 5-6 gear and you have to start out on the grade. Get that motor into the higher rev’s to keep the water moving and still run 65mph. The key is to not let the Ecoboost heat up in the first place an manage with the RPMs. I’ve found it actually gets BETTER fuel econs than just slamming the pedal to the floor because the computer isn’t dumping fuel to try to cool the motor down. 285 was a rougher pull until after Kenosha Pass as the hills are steep and they just keep coming with not a lot of recovery for the cooling system. That’s a 45-50mph road but traffic is usually moving slower anyway.

I thought this was informative, do you really need an HD if you occasionally actually tow 10,000 lbs? The Ford engine management protected the engine, made it up the hill a mere 20 seconds after the HD. Of course the HD is going to have an easier time pulling the load, on the other hand it's huge diesel fumes are a dangerous carcinogen so for those that are thinking every once in a while I'll tow 10,000 lbs, a 1/2 will work. A 1/2 ton will fit in my garage a super duty or heavy duty will not.

I would like to see this same test with the Dodge, Chevy, and Ford half ton V8s, particularly in warmer weather. Possibly a repeat with the F150 hybrid to see if the issue repeats itself, as I believe that was a bit of a fluke. I purchased an F150 5.0 w/10 speed in 2018. I towed loaded 8k to 10k trailers from TX to VA three times in 2 weeks time. It was April, so temperatures were relatively mild for TX. Overall, I was quite impressed with the performance. Granted, the towing was on the flat and near sea level, but I never once wanted for more power or more control, even during some pretty nasty thunderstorms. Obviously, the F150 could not hold a candle to my F350 dually diesel with TowBoss package, but it was never intended to do so. One big word of caution not discussed during the video is frontal and side area especially in crosswinds. Even a light travel trailer (< 7500 lbs) can be a real handful on the highway in poor weather conditions. I have seen too many campers in the median strips and over guardrails in my travels. Weight distribution and sway control are both absolutely required equipment. Even when so equipped, the half ton will be markedly less stable than the 3/4 ton truck. That said, I have done many cross country trips pulling a 20 foot hybrid camper with a properly equipped Expedition and a few with the F150. The Expedition is a much better tow vehicle, especially stability wise. The F150 suspension and lack of rear weight really shows up in tough conditions. Anyway, I know towing can be done safely and I do it regularly, but you will have much more margin with the bigger vehicle.

Payload was coming back at just under 2500. Cost was $57k for 2021. However dealer had an xl 350 diesel crew in 6.5 bed for $54k. I was going that way but it was sold out from under me! Darn! Ended up leasing a 3.0 diesel gm half ton crew. Powertrain is incredible like the 3.5 in Fords. But the truck ride is so soft and dismal I cant wait to turn this lease in. I buy all three brands and used to favor gms. Not anymore. Small fuel tanks and pillowly car ride and average interior means I will probably try to sell this lease if possible.

These videos would be more informative if you ran live diagnostics. A $20 obd2 tool would give live data of all sensors. I would love to see the exact transmission and engine temperatures. This is what really differentiates TFL. The real world tests! Thank you Andre for using your own truck for this. This is a legitimate use case, and absolutely within the advertised limits of the F-150. It shouldn't have overheated. Would like an explanation from Ford, but I'm sure they'd likely refuse to comment. If TFL/Andre are feeling really generous, they should try to replicate this issue and see if it's repeatable. The 5.0 cannot compare to the EcoBoost when towing, anyone who has driven both will tell you this. It's not a fair fight to compare a large diesel to the PowerBoost. Did 10,890lbs up the hills of West Virginia last week in my 2021 Powerboost. Got 7mpg. The truck did start to heat up going up the hill. You will notice when it starts to heat up the actual temperature will appear below the gauge (on king ranch with digital screen). It did shut down the generator until it cooled down. But it never lost speed up hill and it handled it extremely well with the right weight distribution hitch and sway control. I wouldn't do it every day. But the half ton can do the job. Safely. We had two to crash because of the death wobble. The brakes failed on several. Meanwhile the Chevy 4wd 3500s had one fuel pump failure, not a single transmission failure. Doesn't actually seem that bad, it actually didn't overheat. It seems to do what modern CPU's do, that is fun at max power and when they heat up they show down a little too they do off.
