Personally I usually find the gear the car typically wants to drift in, then make that gear longer. If it was 3rd I would then make 2nd and 4th really short. A short 2nd gear helps get wheel spin going on a lower powered car so I don't have to use the e-brake on every turn. The short 4th is just in case I have to up shift mid-drift . I then adjust the final drive so that 3rd gear sits right below the red line at max wheel spin. I will have to try your method though, looks good.
@HokiHoshi5 жыл бұрын
Yep that is almost exactly what I used to do in FH3! A lot of my old drifting Buddies still do something similar so I'm all about going about it that way, but I found for me personally making all the gears short has been easier
@frederick1235 жыл бұрын
after your drift tuning video and helpful reply in comments, I ended up doing some frankenstein gearing, figuring out the best stock gear, then getting one gear before and after closer, but not as close as you do, but more similar to formula drift tune, meaning if I need to really slow down, I downshift, and if I'm going into really fast corner, upshifting. And then I ended up keeping the rest of the tunes as close to stock as possible, if I need to straighten up, speed up and catch up to someone.

That 4-gear NASCAR tuning is perfect for me as a beginner. It's simple and reliable and lets me to focus on improving my skills, instead of fine-tuning the right gear. By the way, I would be happy to see a more elaborate video on technique. I still have troubles to grasp how to drift in a more sharp corners and how to control the angle during the drift. You're a great teacher and your videos vastly improved my tuning and racing skills, so it would be great if you did a video like that.

@DDxRaptor5 жыл бұрын
I guess the overall idea behind your attempt of making the gears shorter for drifting isn't bad, but i'd rather do it the other way around. My drift style is based on the knowledge that I want to have more velocity in the back tires to initiate a drift and holding it, therefore the tires have to spin faster. This will only happen if the gear ratios aren't too close together, so the gap between the gear change is big enough to let the torque on the tires decline and rise back up again which causes spin. Shorter gears might give you a bit more precision, but longer ones will give you more control. I mostly use 2nd & 3rd gear in normal corners, 4th gear on longer ones and straights. It will heavily depend on the car, engine output, weight distribution and such, so one might be best of to adjust the gears for every car differently.

The method of having short gears close to each other is helpful for keyboard drifting, since you don't have control over the throttle. Also, a small tip: at least on pc, you can enter the load tune menu to see your car's data, including your weight distribution. That way, you don't have to jump out into the part menu.

I usually tune mine to stay in as few gears as possible, usually one or two, i tune them so they don't bounce very much on the limitor that way i have room to use the throttle to turn the car, for medium powered and greater it's usually fine to take any turn with one fine tuned gear ratio, low powered may need one for medium and sharp turns and one for long turns, i just tune the one closest when trying out the stock tune

Hoki, gotta ask - What's one car that isn't in FH4 that you'd like to see in it? Personally I'd love to see the kit car, the SLC Superlite - Depending on it's options for quality of life (Things like Air Conditioning, etc) it would weigh roughly 2000-2500 pounds when complete (Typically around 2400), but it doesn't come stock with an engine, and is designed to accommodate as many possible engines as it could with a very long and wide engine bay. So you could put a 500HP Inline-4 in, or put a V10 in. A V12 might even fit in it (Although I haven't seen anyone do that, although I do know there have been V10s put in). It also doesn't come with a drive train, so you could put a 4 speed manual, or a 10 speed. Whatever fits in the car and budget is your choice. It also has incredible grip and downforce. It holds numerous track lap records. Roughly speaking the Car IRL starts around 48g, but configuring it on the website (depending on how track insane you want it) can push the price well into the 80,000+ range. Typical street builds run around 65g, Race builds somewhere around 85-100+ depending on configuration.

Well, and I know its an easy answer, but I'm really bummed Toyota isn't in FH4, because I own a Toyota that was in FH3! So I'd love to see the mk3 Supra come back. Aside from that, funny enough the other missing car that always sticks out to me is the 300zx, but that's coming to the game now! I'd love to see some more oddball daily driver cars, and some more obscure old JDM cars though!

I would very much like a stock engine drift tune set-up for the AE86 in this game. I've learned so much from your videos about tuning but the AE86 is the most troublesome for me ,and that's saying it's my favorite car. Everything else I did perfectly with your tuning methods but the gearing is where I really struggle. It just seems to over rev. I guess Bunta was right when he said the 86 is a car that teaches the driver.
@factoryrider95375 жыл бұрын
I personally prefer some well spaced out gears because I also like to do high speed drifting, definitely suit it to the power of the car but I feather the throttle and steering very smoothly so I personally have no need to have the gear ratio help me much more and I use for example second for a similar type of tighter corners, 3rd for most regular drifting and 4th to 6th for anything from 100 to 180mph drifts. I also use the clutch so dropping a bit more in rpm isn't a big deal to me. Great vid though I'm sure it will help plenty of people :)

Nice video! Although I didn't see a poll at the end. Lol I've got an idea/suggestion for a video that I would like to see. Could you do an in depth look and comparison of all the different tire choices and which would be more beneficial for each class? For example, would it be more beneficial to use street/sport compound tires for >A Class cars and Race/Horizon Race compound for high BHP A to X class? I'm curious as to just how much grip each tire gives. Some cars I've put sports tires on feel no less grippy than if I put race tires on. Other times, street/sports tires feel grippy-er in wet weather compared to race tires. I'm eager to see what you think on this, because it could help out with deciding on a PI budget between horsepower upgrades or better tires for car builds.

I usually start with making 1st be 2nd. 1st is basically useless in most cases. The car wont move. Then i tune the gears so the car is always on the power band like you did with the difference that i get a useful 1st gear and a mental top speed
@hazmatcinemaxxx5 жыл бұрын
I prefer to use 3 main gears for drifting with added gears for speed. 1st gear goes to something around 120mph, 2nd gear around 145mph, 3rd gear around 165mph. Really gearing all depends on the torque and hp of the engine. Basically make the 1st gear go as high as possible while still maintaining enough power to spin out the wheels from a stop. Then tier following gears so you still have a large power band but not too large that switching to the next gear drops your rpms too low.

Oooorrr u could simply put 6th gear as a one to one ratio, (1.00) adjust ur final drive to 170mph not sure for kph, line up the gears using the gear board on the bottom right, and adjust from there, works best for me, also lower HP cars will use a lower mph as a base, 120mph is lowest I've gone with my drift cars that have 200hp.

@hokihoshi Can you go into detail about which upgrades are most important with your drift cars? The different modern Corvettes and the MB SL65 AMG Black Series are awesome, but you have to be cautious cuz those things will mess you up if you don't pay attention. A fun way I found is swapping an Acura RSX to RWD + the full built Rally engine, it's not as fast but it's fun to drift.

This is no good for someone on a Sim Rig. I use a H pattern shifter with Clutch and wheel. With this method I'm changing gears to much. I personally prefer mainly to use 3rd and 4th gears to drift as they are opposite each other. I use the same method of finding the correct power band for the engine but I will stretch these gears out so I'm always in 3rd or 4th and only ever drop into 2nd for a very tight bend. Hope this helps anyone on a Rig. I find most my drift car set ups are similar with Sport tyres and between 650/800 BHP depending on weight of the car. The lighter the car the lower the power. My PB on needle hill in my Rig was with a BMW E36 RB26 TT maxed out tuning on sport tyres = 476.000k points.

So I felt like in drift with this car you were going quite slow and when you had a tandem guy come up on you he passed you and you couldn’t get close to him again because it felt like you didn’t have enough speed to stay with him. Is that due to the 240 just not having a ton of power with the engine set up the way you have it or is that a gearing thing that you could somehow fix? If so how would you fix that by tuning the gear ratios?
