Living in Chicago and riding the el regularly as a child, in tow with and waist-high to my mom who commuted downtown as a stenographer for public works court proceedings, BART was such a cool concept. A purposefully conceived holistic rail transit system (you could say space age) was so different from the old systems of the 19th century, geared for private gain to develop real estate on the outskirts of then-growing cities. And yet, not so different from the old school systems in how it tied neighborhoods together the way roads just can’t. As a pre-adolescent my mom handed me a Chicago Tribune article on the then in-concept BART system, explaining it would travel under the bay, through mountains etc. using aerospace-grade technology. A few years later we visited San Francisco (I think I was 12). Of course, I immediately abandoned my parents and sisters to take long solo excursions on BART, while they experienced Ghirardelli and Alcatraz. As a teen we returned, by that time I was able to experience the Transbay Tube (as well as the new MUNI subway under Market Street). I was so enthralled that I chose a career in public transportation, and in my adult years as an engineer, was fortunate enough to participate in design of the extension to San Jose. A powerful reminder of what a grain of inspiration can lead to. Thanks Vincent, for creating this film to remind everyone just what is possible in a brief moment of time when polarization is trumped by possibility and dare I say, idealism.

I wish you repeated the audience members' questions after they asked - while the answers do provide context I still wish I had heard the questions. But bro the film you've made is brilliant - you're really taking transit-oriented slow tv to the next level, the associated youtube communities are gonna go NUTS for this shit. Please do more! Thanks for this film. I recently started commuting from the East Bay to San Francisco and appreciate the time savings not traveling on the roads and freeways. Regardless of the public image it has garnered over the years it still a viable and necessary service for the entire bay area community.

Nice job Vincent. The appreciation of this innovative infrastructure is awesome. I’ve always been intrigued by the construction and development of systems like this. Especially as commented in Tunnel Vision the building of a system in an already developed area.

It's interesting that BART is one of the few American transit systems that doesn't have tons of forward facing footage all over the Internet. Some trains are setup so there is a window in the front where a passenger can get to with little difficulty, and some systems (most notably Chicago's L) routinely post front camera footage on their official KZbin channel.

Pro Trip: do not hold wireless mics at the bottom, that is where the antenna is. Every time you hold the mic at the bottom you had signal problems.

The mic is cutting out because the transmitter at the base is blocked by his hand. Notice when he puts his hand higher, it doesn't cut out.

I have 2 questions that no one at the Roxie asked. Is the film really one long, continuous shot, from SFO to the eBART transfer platform? (If so, that must set some sort of cinematic record!!) How many trips did it take to capture this footage?

It was one take! I think I probably made no more than 5 attempts. I do think there are a lot of other filmmakers who shoot long continuous takes or timelapse, though.
