Turbo Everdrive Flashcart for the Turbografx-16 and PC Engine

Episode 8 - This week I review the Turbo Everdrive by krikzz for the TurboGrafx-16, TurboDuo, PC Engine, and SuperGrafx consoles. This device allowed you to play any HuCard game directly from an SD card. The entire TG16 and PCE library will fit on one SD card, so this is an incredibly convenient device even for the seasoned collector. You can also play homebrew games and ROM hacks!

Just as a general thing: V2 has faster loading than V1, but I got the V1 because my version has a region mod which means it won't work on my system properly.

I need this. I also need to find some place to repair or replace my CD unit. I'm guessing the laser has gone out of alignment over the years. I used to take it to work and plug it into a boombox as a kinda ghetto CD player.

I don't know about ever drives because I like playing the original carts but it is definitely good for trying games before you output so much money for some of the games that may not be good not that I car I collect them so I want a full collection of games and thank you you answered my question if the games are the same as on the carts

My everdrive came with a half shell. when it it is inserted in the console, it is protected. Now, is there any reason why I should not just keep it inserted?

+Mark Hayden No reason that I can think of. If you have a Duo or CD system, you can just use the ED to load a CD BIOS file and it will kick the CD player on. If you just have a straight TG16 or PCE, then there is especially no reason to take it out.

I just want to make sure the TG16 does not have that issue. I have a standard American unit, recapped. I made the AV out from a RCA cable. the back still fits on. It cost me a fair sum, so I baby it. The drive looks cool in the console. the shield is clear.

Aaron Poukkula Unfortunately you can't do that with the current version of the Turbo Everdrive. But there will be a "Version 2" of the Turbo Everdrive coming out soon, and I suspect that it will have the ability to act as a System Card 3.0, although I don't know that for sure.

You wouldn't be able to try to load it, because the Everdrive will only show you HuCard roms. A TG16 or PC Engine lacks the needed hardware to run a CD game, anyway. What you would need (outside of a CD drive for the console) is a Super SD System 3.

No. The Turbo Everdrive doesn't have any RAM so it can't act as an Arcade Card.

To me it sounds like you probably have bad ROMs. The Internet Archive has complete ROM sets for pretty much every system ever. You can also just try downloading individual ROMs on the web (just do a Google search for whatever ROM you need).

I don't get the Reset button on the EverDrive. Pushing [Run]+[Select] simultanuously on the controller will actually reset the system. At least the US consoles work that way. I don't know about PC Engine, and I assume it would just do the same.

Hey, Will! Resetting the system from your Turbo controller will take you back to the title screen of the game you're playing, while pressing the reset button on the Everdrive will take you back out to the ED menu so that you can choose a different game.

Have you ever had any problems with the Turbo Everdrive breaking or having its circuits catch dust and stop working? I've always wanted to buy a Turbo Everdrive, but unfortunately, it only has a glass cover that only protects the front of the card and does not protect the sides or the top of the card.

Hey why not get a 32Gb card and put ur directory folders in there for all systems and put all games on there from all consoles, then just change out SD card from one everdrive to the next. The system only going to recognize that particular directory folder as well as the games.

The problem is that I got all of my Everdrives right when they came out. Plus SD cards are ridiculously cheap, so there's not much to be gained by only having one, because then I'll constantly be looking to see which ED my card is in.

Why use the reset button? Hold Run & press Select to soft reset the system in virtually all TurboGrafx16 games.

Classic Gaming Quarterly I'm really not sure since i don't have an everdrive to test it out. I believe it's a console soft reset for 2 reasons. I learned of the run + select & run + select, select commands from the console manual back in the day and with the CD games it sends you back to the CD Bios screen instead of the title screen of the game. I'm intrigued to know how it functions with the ever drive. Also note that some games that relied heavily on the run & select buttons had the combo command disabled or you had to press select 2x, so it also relies on the game being played. Example: the command in "Shapeshifter" and "Last Alert" doesn't work at all, but in "Asuka 120%" it only works if you hit select 2x and it sends you to the CD Bios screen that loads via the CD hucard which makes me believe it is a console reset versus a game reset.

+Lorfarius No, there is not. Based on my rudimentary understanding of how the system works, I do not believe that it will ever be possible to run CD games off of the Everdrive. What may end up happening at some point is that someone will make a separate device that would plug into the expansion port on the back of a TurboGrafx or PC Engine that can emulate a CD drive and load games from an SD card, much like what has been done with the Playstation and Saturn.

+Gamingnight I believe the maximum is 220 per folder, but I don't have that many. I have my games split up alphabetically into maybe 8-10 folders. Ex. "A-D", "E-H", "I-L", etc. Makes it easier to find your game. I also have them separated by TG-16 vs. PCE. So when I first boot the system, there are PCE and TG-16 folders, when when I open one of those, I see "A-D, E-H", etc.

If you have a TurboGrafx-16 system, then to play CD games you will have to buy the CD drive, and a System 3.0 card (which is pretty expensive). If you really want to get in to gaming on the Turbo platform, I would sell your TG16 and buy a Japanese Turbo Duo (preferably the Duo-R). You can get one for about $200 and it will allow you to play all CD games without needing to buy anything else (except for the few "ArcadeCD" games that do require an Arcade Card). You can either region-mod your system if you want to play US HuCards, buy the PC Engine versions instead, or just stick with the Everdrive which will play both no matter what region the console is. There is no way at this time to play CD games in the same way that you can play HuCard games using the Everdrive.

AlucardMorgurth Krikzz has said the same thing. My Duo-R is region-modded and works just fine with the Turbo Everdrive, but obviously your mileage may vary.

Your comment about the game being not emulation is actually incorrect. Roms that you get to put on these things sometimes are missing some aspects of the original game. I will say most games are perfect to their original, this isnt always true. Star Ocean on SNES is a perfect example of this, the rom has sound errors not present in the orginal game due to the data compression that was done on the game prior to people trying to port it to emulation. This made Star Ocean and Tengai Makyou Zero visually unplayable till 6 years ago.

Darc Vigilante Yes. You just have to make sure that you set the region switch on the Everdrive so that it matches the region of your console. So you would want to set it to "PCE", but you would be able to play games from both regions, yes.

Replying from 3 years in te future relative to the question. But. basicly the cd module pc engine or turbografx cd does more than just read the disk. The card slot has only so much io and was well utilized for everything they did with it. However the rear of the systems have a very large connector with much more io. This is necessary for the ammount of data being handled across the bus.

I also purchased most of my flash carts on retrogate.com I currently own the sd2snes, mega everdrive, nes-n8, ez flash 4 and the 64drive. I am currently looking forward for a gameboy everdrive that will be released at retrogate in the future and maybe later I get the game gear everdrive. I purchased the 64drive over the everdrive 64 because at the time I purchased it it was the best between the two and I still think its the best or maybe there are some minor differences but nothing major. the 64drive can be purchased on retroactive.be in case anyone might want to check that out and compare both of them. Sorry for the late reply. I would suggest the SD2SNES because its the best flash cart currently available and its also updatable. The sd2snes almost has near full compatibility with the snes library. Some games use special chips like kirby's super star and super mario world 2 amoung a few others. I suggest you do a Wikipedia search for more details but I assure you if you want the best of the best for he snes you cannot go wrong with the SD2SNES. I do not know about the sound in the nes apart from the fact its only in mono and that certain modifications can be made on the console so it provides stereo sound and the nes-n8 would have no problem with that. All the flash carts I purchased are the best because I did my research on each flash cart and i compared it to others in the market and are simply unmatched. I do not regret purchasing any of my flash carts. If I were you I would purchase the 64drive over the everdrive 64 simply because it uses micro sd cards and compact flash..so if one malfunctions for any reason you can use the other but aside from that minor difference both flash carts are the same. If I were you i would buy the everdive 64 because its $100 and the 64drive is $200 and both are pretty much the same..good luck and if you have more questions feel free to keep asking :)

At the time I made this video, krikzz didn't have his shop.krikzz.com storefront yet, and retrogate was the "official" seller. Anything I bought through there came out of the Ukraine, which is where krikzz is located. StoneAgeGamer is fine, but in my opinion overpriced.

I imagine the big driver is 100% accurate representation of the hardware - emulation just can't perfectly emulate the underlying hardware yet, even for something as simple as a 68k-based system.
