In this video I replaced the turbo actuator / wastegate on my 15g turbo. The main reason I replaced it is because the rod was severely corroded and it could not be adjusted, to rusty. I was also hoping it was defective because I am under boosting.

I like when you're on the same project that I am. I haven't heard my turbo whistle in years so I'm trying to work on it. I ordered a new turbo control valve with new hoses. I read the old one can be frozen in a position that won't trigger an error code. Parts are coming in today and hopefully will find time this weekend to install it. Good luck with your turbo!!

I like your video and the repair you made. Is there some reason other than cost you are not using new parts instead of gambling with ones out of a wrecking yard? I'm asking because this seems like such an important part.

Just cost. I've been out of work for about 9 years caring for a relative. OEM parts are very expensive to me and most after market parts are not as good as used OEM.

Which kind are you leaning toward, mechanical or electric? I'd like to get a mechanical gauge but I like to have a peak recall and alarm function. Those functions seem to only be on electric gauges. The search continues.

I couldn't believe how smooth it went to remove the heat shield and loosen the nut on the rod to test the wastegate after reading many horror stories. However, I think now it was too good to be true because after all that I believe I may have destroyed some diaphragm in the wastegate. When I tried to loosen the nut, I spun the rod. I realized that too late and then clamped it down to finally loosen it. I just read that if that rod spins you have broken the diaphragm inside. Is that correct? Did I just screw my self?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Schwarz That is possible. I think the diaphragm is fixed / attached to the rod. If you need another one let me know. I probably can get you one cheap.

Hey Robert, I have a 04 v70 2.5t. I have a three code I’m trying to figure out. P0299, p0337, and p0017. Iv changed(new) both cam sensors and housing even checked the voltages(good). I’ve changed(new) camshaft sensor and mount also have good voltage at connection. Replaced pcv system and am going to replaced the waste gate to hopefully fix the under boost…..where can I find specs for the waste gate psi to make it or is it just the 4 psi you had done with yours? And can you help me with any other ideas for the cam and crank codes? I hope to hear from you. Thank you for the great videos

Hey Robert my name is Jason by the way I went and subscribed to your friends stats channel so that he could get paid but here's the question how do you know if it's your turbo control solenoid or your wastegate is it not easier and cheaper to start with the solenoid if you are getting some overboost hope to hear from you

I'd start with the hose to the waste gate actuator. Then the solenoid.

Do you think that if I was still able to apply pressure and see the rod move in and out, that it wasn't damaged? Or would I still see it move with the applied pressure being damaged inside? Any ideas to confirm if it is damaged or not?

You know something,, I cannot find that there is a code for it either, but the other day my check engine light came on (I have a 1997 Volvo 850). I thought it was for the fuel evaporator since that has caused the check engine light to come on in the past if I top off the fuel tank too much. I decided to have it checked out and the mechanic that read the code told me it was a turbo wastegate code.

HI! Robert, I have some problems with my 850 T5, problem is underboosting, I think that problem is in turbocharger, because iI tried to drive car without vacum line on wastegate and it was like before. What could be problem bad waste gate or bypas valve, and turbo is in good condition.

In my case I have a 05 auto Saab 9-3 2.0T my boost needle goes up and goes down normal I get what I put in needle doesn't shake or acts up and I don't let it get to the red . My question is on a stock 05 Saab 9-3 everything stock do we need to hear the wastegate make a sound when it release pressure like a blowoff valve pshhhh because I can hear my turbo sound like a turbine pick up quick but I don't hear any pshhhh sound when it releases presure is it normal not to hear the sound of a blow of valve. The car drives normal I just once hear the pweee sound of the blow of valve since the I hear the turbo built power but I can hear no blow off valve sound

Robert DIY Is the turbo itself going silly, can you move the lever without stickyness or does it move itself with nothing connected, like some kind of internal suction? Sorry i know nothing about the subject, sorry. What about locking the boost lever and see if it stays the same, just in case the turbo is playing up? Other than that, where is the suction coming from to drive the fresh actuator you fitted, is it the same source as the dashboard boost meter, can it get too much?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 жыл бұрын
The car is fitted with a BCS (Boost Control Solenoid). The computer is suppose to read the metered air from it and the MAF and control the pressure on the waste gate actuator by the BCS. When to much pressure is building in the turbo, the bypass valve is suppose to dump the excessive air back into the intake manifold. The other day I actually unhooked the waste gate arm from the turbo and I had zero boost and no turbo power. So, my educated guess is that the old BCS is either getting stuck intermittently or it is simply not functioning properly. A lot of people remove the electronic BCS and install a manual boost controller so they can control the boost peak/max points.
@zx8401ztv
@zx8401ztv 10 жыл бұрын
Robert DIY Ooow more complex than i thought, well the wastegate actuator is a fresh one so thats out of the loop, the turbo does shut down if the lever is set, so yes it does sound like you have nailed the problem to the bcs. So its back to the car scrap yard for a bcs.. Hope you do fix it, it would drive me potty lol.

Sebastian Schwarz Well, if I have to go to the junk yard, pull it out, package it up, ship it to you, it will cost me way more than $20. So, if I go get you a used one it would cost you about $50. Check around and see if you can get a new one for close to that. Also, I can NOT guarantee that I can find a rust free used waste gate. That is part of the exhaust and it will likely have some minor rust but it would be serviceable.
