American here. I was USA military at Adana in 1984-86. 12:24 Family culture was similar to my rural living in Indiana. I really liked how close the families were with each other. Turkiye is rich in history and diversity. Absolutely the best years for my family! I lived in Adana at a large apartment building. My family felt safe and we had terrific friends. Liked it so much, I volunteered to go again in 1993-95. The second tour in 1993, Adana was not as friendly. I don’t know what happened but, we only visited the city twice in two years. Instead, we toured small towns and traveled Mersin to Alanya. The coastal people brought back the memories of happy friends and good strangers from the 80’s. Hopefully, Turkiye is still full of happiness. I wish my grandchildren could see the Turkiye I fell in love with.

i worked with a turkish guy and he was really nice. he was smart. i have nothing against the few people in the video that had negatives thoughts about us. our cultures are vastly different and we mostly only know about each others cultures from the media, and that can give some bad impressions, but that's normal. overall i hope to visit turkey in the near future and make some turkish friends

A couple of them responded accurately, but most of the people interviewed have no idea about American life. Most of us are not living easy care-free lives, we are uninsured and living paycheck to paycheck with no real economic freedom; and the government is definitely not looking out for our best interests. I lived in Türkiye for 2 years when I was in the USAF and I have to say I loved the Turkish people. I travelled the country extensively and will always have a deep fondness for the Turks. I have been back to Türkiye a few times since and hope to go back many more times. The Turks and their country will always hold a special place in my heart. Even those people in this video that had some negative things to say about Americans I still like them.

Can, what a great video! I am an American who lived in Turkey many years ago and visited several times since. I loved everyone’s comments, both the good and the bad as there is some truth in all of them, although a couple of comments described extremes that are rare in my experience here in the USA. For those with the really negative comments, most of us are not that bad. For those with the glowing comments, thanks. I had friends in Kadikoy and stayed there several times while I lived in Balikesir. Someone posted a “walking tour” of Balikesir and it has changed so much since I lived there. As a New Yorker American(family from Puerto Rico). Who loves Türkiye very much. I have to say. We have many cultures and religions here. Americans are not all the same. Our economy is not that great. We struggle to survive. Even the rich go bankrupt. No one is secure here. And we know it. We don't care about politics because nothing changes. We dont look at the world because we are concerned with our neighborhoods and survival day to day. Educated people have time for world news. We dont travel overseas because it is expensive and takes time 8 hours minimum. Some people can't pay 100 for a passport and then pay for that country's visa. We are getting fatter because of processed food. Organic is expensive!! We don't have the same beautiful culture Türkiye does because everyone forgot where their parents and grandparents came from. Anyway I love Turkish people music food and culture. But it's hard in America. Family values dont exist anymore. It's sad. I am 48, and a lot of people do not have children because of the culture safety and economy. I don't want to be here anymore. I have friends in İstanbul. Maybe I will go see them and not come back to New York 😂

From the viewpoint as an American, I’d say there’s truth to alot of the different peoples opinions to which I agree. I believe most Americans don’t travel to Europe because it’s expensive ticket, and for most of the middle class to bring the whole family is alot of money. Overall I think everyone has a lot more in common than we think or are told to think.

It's very interesting to hear the stereotypes -- both good and bad -- that other countries have about us. I think the biggest difference between the Turks giving their opinions about us and US citizens giving their opinions about Turks is that there are a variety of opinions in Turkey, while most Americans have a more limited view of Turkey (and everywhere else for that matter.) There are extremely kind Americans here, and also very self-centered and cold Americans. Most Americans are more socially liberal than most Asians, Africans, Mideasterners, but perhaps less liberal than citizens of many European countries. But one thing I think is fairly true of most Americans is that they have (although perhaps unconsciously) this obnoxious idea of "American exceptionalism." There is no "best" country in the world in all areas. For example, socially I perhaps have fewer restrictions on me than people in most of the countries I have visited or lived in. But while I was a young woman living in Japan I could walk around anywhere in Tokyo -- one of the most populous cities in the world -- in any district at night without fear for my safety. In that respect Japan was (and I think still remains) far superior and "freer" for me (as a woman) than the US is.

I have been to America for 9 months, traveled through different states, was invited to eat and sleep with people who had Navajo backgrounds, never seen more homeless people in my life, you will see plenty in San Francisco, I found the people in the South very friendly but this was before Trump was elected president, I told people I met in the South I was European, slums and ghettos in Turkey are a walk in the park when compared to America, my navigation had troubles in LA so I ended up in a non tourist neighborhood in South central, I had a rental car with a license plate from a different state, I realized it could draw attention, luckily for me the locals understood my situation and told me how to get on my way to my motel, Turkey is heaven when compared to America.

I got onto this channel 5 days ago to learn Türkiye whilst I am in the country. I memorised a few greetings before coming to the country and using your channel to learn more. I will be getting a tutor for a few lessons as I wish to do a country tour next year. American society has gone down hill, values, culture, education, lawlessness etc. what you have here in Türkiye may seem to some as restricting and boring but at least you still have culture and identity, where people still have a respect for the law and each other.

An interesting comments several people in the video made was about us being carefree, and not caring about anything. I guess it depends on what they mean, for example, 61% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. It's hard to be carefree if you are broke😅. I would say we are a bit carefree in regards to certain things, like school for example. ln some countries kids have to study a crazy amount of hours.

Geez - interesting to know their view points about Americans. Everyone has their own perceptions both good or bad, mostly funneled via social media networks. There’s no truth or false as one can find them in certain people exactly the same way we can find them in Turkish culture. I have many Turk friends of all ages and somethings are puzzling to them, as some of theirs is puzzling to me. I visit Turkiye and lived for sometime as I say the perception and realities are quite far apart. Even when I tell them about our culture they don’t believe unless I have to show it to them. This is true in every culture and society. 🤣

I have lived in the US for almost 20 years and I have spent a lot of time in Türkiye too (5 trips, 6 months). I certainly miss the hospitality of Turkish people, the food, the history, the beaches, and, in general I felt safer than in the US. It made me sad, however, that LGBTQ folks in Türkiye do not have the same rights and acceptance that we have in America.

there is no freedom in America. I am a Turkish American. We work our asses off to be able to pay our bills. We're condemned to have a car, to pay for car insurance, pay for the lease or the finance of the car. If we can manage to buy a house, we have to pay for the mortgage for the rest of our lives until it's paid off. We have to pay for health insurance. If we don't have an insurance card, we are charged a lof of money to go to the doctor.

I would like to add that--in any country-- the impressions we have of people from other countries are usually based on our impressions of tourists. And, of course, tourists are generally very well-off compared to the great majority of their countrymen and quite relaxed and carefree while they are on vacation. So, when we give our opinions of "Americans", "Europeans", "Brits", "people from India", "North Africans", "Australians", etc., we are usually describing a very tiny portion of the people. Added to that are the stereotypes we see from pop culture on the Internet.

I'm always open to answering anything people from other countries ask about what it's like over here. When I used to go on cruises I'd run into people working aboard the vessels that came from other countries and they'd ask me about places. For them to understand how the people live in the US is pretty much the same everywhere. We look at each other as if things are good until you speak to someone then you understand. Or live here for several years. I can't base my view on Turkiye just by their music, entertainment, culture, politics, etc... All I have is a window. I can't judge it just by that. I'd have to live there for several years and then I still wouldn't have learned everything. But it's a start.

Depends, sheeps will hate it because they are told to. My father is 78 yo and he loved America because American people donated vaccines to Turks back when he was young. This really touched him. I think general sentiment towards the US is negative, but its purely because of the American government, their Iraqi invasion and support for PKK, if these never happened Turks would love America, most of the old people grew up watching Dallas, and kids nowadays like American music and pop culture a lot. Hell, we even have Trump supporters and Reagan lovers.

Because it tends to generalise a nation of 350 million people from probably over 300 different nations. I am very disappointed by most of the negative comments...😥 I have been to Turkiye twice for extended stays from Istanbul to the Hatay region ( Antakya & Samandag ). I stayed with a Muslim family in Hatay. I lived their life. I was treated as part of the family. I hand picked olives for 2 days & wore a head scarf... I gave love & respect & got love & respect back... What could be better than that??

American travelers should always be very mindful of their behavior and interactions with local populations when traveling abroad. You serve as an informal representative of an entire nation and culture. You might be the only American that somebody interacts with, and leaving them with a positive impression can change their entire world view on Americans. And it goes both ways, a positive interaction with a foreigner can leave a lasting impression on any American. Of course this does not change the fact that American foreign and economic policy is very dominant, but people tend to retain emotional memories from direct interactions better than synthesizing informed opinions based on encyclopedic political history. Always be a polite, friendly and respectful traveler and you can actually help sway popular opinion and effect international diplomacy in small ways. Bring small goodwill gesture gifts. Respect local customs. Better to be too quiet than too loud. Try to be a bit informed about what locals care about and some of the challenges they face. And always learn how to say "please" and "thank you" in the native language whereever you go.

In America the majority of people work paycheck to paycheck, 50+ hours weekly, not by choice but according to needs. The US government has absolutely no interest in helping the citizens. Refugees can arrive in America with UN paperwork, and have full coverage healthcare, dental, and vision, but a citizen working 50+ hours must pay and can barely survive due to healthcare costs for a family. America is too busy caring for others instead of fixing the inside first. I agree that there is a MAJOR drug problem in America, highly ignored mental health issues, and a daily increase in crime. Having been to Turkey before, I believe Americans overall could learn from the hospitality and luxurious lifestyle of being able to walk everywhere instead of needing a car like in America. I think Can could do more interviews of people aged 40+, the young minded interviews are only focused on entertainment, and lack of life experience.

When I was living in Germany as a American I thought the Germans people were cool if they liked you being there young as a civilian in Germany but not the military. The Turkish people I met were very interested in me to gather information on my life as an American made for some good cultural exchange conversations. Allot of Turkish people came to Germany first jobs and to improve their lives I guess wanted to broaden their horizons if they could further travel into Europe, North America and Australia.

Turkey is already a sufficiently developed country. It has been dragged into an economic crisis only in the last 5 years. Turks went to Germany 60 years ago upon the request Germany, Turkish workers. I’m going to say something that really shocked me culturally about Türkiye standards. It may not sound like a big deal to most US women but if you’re gonna marry a turkish man please know that the definition (and act) of “clean” is NOT the same … no one talks about this but to me cleaning is a chore and not fun and I’m not really that good at it but since I’m married now… nobody warned me that I was going to have to go “above and beyond” (with no outside help - yes my husband is stingy with money) in cleaning +organizing +maintaining +designing +replacing +updating +moving +the household on a daily basis - and yes ladies this also includes patio, lawn, backyard… their standard is so high that sometimes I wish I was like “OCD” about cleaning because it’s something they can constantly criticize me about. I don’t blame the high standard - it’s just something you can’t really feel good about. Anyway, just something I noticed recently because I’m not a dirty person but I guess I am based on their standard lol 😆

It’s so funny to hear them. 10 years ago I would have said the same but then I moved to California. I know,I know , most of you think everyone is rich in California but it’s not true. Homelessness is a big issue in our state. Many of you think Americans are rich because they have cars,money,they can go to the beach all the time but the real luxury in America is health insurance and I’m not kidding. We’re a family of four,my husband is disabled and we have 2 sons. I have 3 jobs and I work 6-7 days a week to get the money we need for our daily life. But I’m not complaining! We have a roof above our heads, we have a car, I cook daily and we even can save some money. I never regretted to move here though I miss my Hungarian family and friends a lot.

Both my parents are Turkish, but I was born in Canada and now live in the United States. I never lived in Turkey, but I've been there many times. I think I have an interesting perspective as I find turkey takes care of its people better than the United States does. For one, you have free government hospitals. Here there are many uninsured. Turkey, especially Istanbul, cares for its street animals and gives them right to exist. Here we euthanize, millions of healthy cats and dogs every year. There are good and bad on both sides. The politics here are a mess and the culture is beyond understanding.I still love both countries!

Mostly fairly accurate assessment. Obviously, not every American have a good life. Like everywhere else, there are rich people, middle class who live fairly comfortably, and then the working class many of them struggle quite a bit. But, if you are willing to work, there are plenty of jobs, and you can make a decent living. Basics like food and clothes are quite cheap compared to wages, but housing is expensive, especially after the pandemic. Yes, people are more free, and also respect different opinions and life styles. But, obviously, not every American have the same views and attitudes just as not every Türk has the same views and attitudes. Most of them don’t pay attention to what happens outside of America. Because America is so big and diverse, it is enough to keep you busy.

I kept on seeing that we live Free lives and we're leading the economy? Most of us in America are living pay check to paycheck and there are still issues in the country that need to be updated. We are weird people but it wouldn't be interesting conversations without the occasional weird. I like Turkish people they seem nice, I'm talking to a Turkish guy online and he's a nice guy

About the economy, living paycheck to paycheck is now a luxury in Turkey, at least if you are just starting your life without any help from your parents. Because there are universities everywhere in the country (more universities less quality of education) everyone is either overqualified for the job they do or doesn't have a job at all. In the early 2000s the minimum wage in Turkey was only given to people who just started that job or to people who do specific works which do not require much effort. But now even people who gave their whole life to a company as blue collar workers make minimum wage. When I went to primary school my father was the only one who worked and he took care of us well. He used to buy bags full of snacks and food I love before coming home every evening. Now my both parents are working. Thinking about what we eat tonight? I must add that we own a home in Istanbul which is a miracle come true for a Turk right now. Thanks to my grandma and granddad who gave us money to close our debts every year. They own a hazelnut garden. Now think how on earth a Turk just got his papers from a university would be able to afford a living with minimum wage while house rents are near double in some places. You may say "go to a place where rents are lower". Those places are usually out of Ankara, İzmir, İstanbul and such which are just made up of farmers and provide near no jobs to someone who is in his/her 20s and wants to live their life to the fullest. I meant to at least see some places beyond Turkey and have fun some nights. You already can't afford it in rural places which don't have anywhere to have fun. Also have people who will not tolerate the modern way of life. They might not say anything directly but will talk about you just behind enough that you will hear them but they won't face consequences.

Also America is a big place with a stronger passport than Turkey. So one who is ambitious, has goals and has a lot of opportunities in America or they can try it in a different country. Turkey does not have that.

EVERYTHING you see from far is GOLD. The thing you lived in is coal. First of all, there is no place in the world where you will find all the people are happy. Not even in the so-called happiest country in the world Finland. Americans think their life is thrash and people who are not from there think america is heaven and vice-versa. I think Türkiye has a very good life standard to offer its citizens. People of the USA think all the Arabs are rich and people in my country thinks Turkiye is much better than our country and america is a dream. So, this is a common scenario all around the world. Most people in this video have literally no idea about life with the exception of one or two. And most of them have serious misconception about american life.

The older guy who claimed Americans wouldn't even give someone a glass of water, that couldn't be further from the truth. He clearly knows nothing about America, but what he hears from countries that hate Americans because Americans wear their clothes freely. As an American who travels the world and visits various countries, Turkiye being the one I'm currently in & I'm dating a Turkish man, some of the people in this video made me changed my mind about Turkish people as a whole. They call us selfish, but I'd rather be selfish than ridiculously over judgmental and spitful based on never visiting a country. Those calling American selfish, like the man I mentioned above, has clearly never been to America. His experience of Americans in Turkiye, are clearly based off of how Americans react to his judgmental assumptions of the world. 100% I would get along with most of the people in this video, but that man and a couple others who spoke like he did, you couldn't pay me to be nice to them. 🤔Hmmm, even money wouldn't motivate this "selfish American" to be nice to judgmental people. Funny how that works.

There is a huge hatred against America in Turkiye but truth to be told that in the past America did bad stuff towards Turks like supporting the seperatists groups and also since that old guy you mentioned was a muslim since elderly people or middle aged people have biased thoughts against Americans. It's a complicated situation in Turkiye since our history is pretty old and ever since Turks came from central asia to anatolia we've been fighting everyone non stop so they can't stop being so judgemental and it doesn't help that most of Europe also hate us and make alot of propaganda against Turks. However in my opinion that most of American people are very kind people but America's government is awful like ours.

This is how old people in Turkey often talk about Americans. Because they look at it from a political perspective. But when you look at the young part, you see a lot of American sympathy. They constantly dream of living in America. If we look at the middle-aged segment, they approach this issue neutrally, or rather, they do not care about America. So just because one person talked like this about America and American people, not all Turks think that way. Regarding helpfulness and stinginess, yes, Turkish people are more helpful and generous than Americans, but we cannot generalize about the American people as in the previous situation. It is very wrong to call all American people stingy and selfish.

Have you heard what your fellow Americans think of each other, ever? I've seen the most brutal insults to Americans, from the Americans themselves. This was in general a positive video, considering your state sanctioned us several times in our history, in a war time when we most needed an ally, and still actively supports PKK which is a designated terrorist group, simply because it serves to American interest. Imagine we did that to you? 90% of americans would want to nuke Turkey.

I like the conservatism in Turkish series. I haven’t seen nudity, sexual behavior or anything immoral. I think American culture is too radically liberal in movies, TV, real life, etc. We are very diverse. Life here is different depending on the neighborhood even more so than the city you live in. I have friends who won’t even come to my city because of violence and crime. So we can’t even generalize about a city or state or U.S. Government is different than culture, many opinions on that also.

@@oulawd6281 I watch movies and series with subtitles in English.. Some are dramas, romance and crime dramas. Latest series was Black Money Love. Love for Rent and The Club with Baris Arduc. Any series with Can Yaman. I see Turkish youth is more respectful of their elders. By conservative I meant morally. A couple may kiss and the camera moves away from their lips. You hardly ever see people naked in bed. They either have their clothes or pajamas on. If nude you only see naked shoulder.

Hmm - very interesting! I am Irish by birth, but have lived in US for decades. Americans are not as care-free as the Turkish people think we are! It all depends on which administration we have. Under the Liberal Biden admin., life has become stressful, our economy is horrible, we have high inflation, disrespect for law enforcement, disrespect from the liberals for the family, for religion, and the result is chaos. I envy the Turkish people in some respects as they are much more polite, have solid family units, they are more conservative which provides stability to their communities. They are better educated as in the US the liberals have infiltrated our school systems. Our society is crumbling and our freedoms are being taken away. Turks should never envy America as it is now. Under our prior administration, America had no wars, energy independence, and plenty of jobs and stability. Now we are heading down a destructive path. Our media lies constantly. Liberals cities are a hotbed of violence and drug use, our border is open with no vetting of who is coming in. We are forced to support, with our tax dollars, the war in Ukraine, which the majority of Americans do not support. The American people, in general, do not support what is being done. I will add that I love the Turkish people and respect their upholding of their traditions - don't allow anyone to change that!

Well said! I'm an ethnic Türk, but born in Canada now living in the United States. Everything you said is 100% fact I would add the crimes in US are incomparable. Drug addicts killing their own children, crimes so horrific that if even one happened in Turkey, it would be on the 24/7 news cycle. You also can't say we have freedom when Americans don't even have mandatory holidays given by companies. People work until they die of heart attacks. My father-in-law still works two jobs to maintain his health insurance. If you use the wrong pronouns in our woke culture, you could be canceled. That is not freedom. Don't even get me started on how many millions of healthy animals we euthanize in our 'shelters'. That in addition to everything you stated above sums it up. Turks only know what they see on TV and from our lying media or social media influencers.

I think the vast majority of Americans never think about Turkey, even when it’s mentioned in the news. Further, I would be stunned if more than 5% of us could accurately point out Turkey on a map, identify your capital city or the name of your president. America, for all its good qualities, is still obscenely parochial. I often thought I would like to visit Istanbul, especially the Grand Bazaar, but as long as Erdogan is in power, I will spend my USD (30TRY:1USD!) elsewhere.
