In this Slay the Spire gameplay, Baalorlord does an Ascension 20 run with Defect. First, he gives tips on choosing a path and a starting bonus. This deck had so many damage solutions: get a bunch of energy to multicast dark orbs, get a bunch of energy and create 100 lightning orbs, get a bunch of energy and skim repeatedly for 0 cost streamline (before Sneko), go infinite with meteor strike -- all while recycling the cards that were the damage dealers in other fights.

This run is really illustrative of why recycle is one of my favorite defect cards lately. Need energy to play meteor? Exhaust some other garbage! Is there an X cost in hand that isn't useful this turn? That's just double energy at home, baby! Is playing meteor impossible, or is the fight too short for meteor to matter? Exhaust meteor itself and play your whole hand instead! By the way, your whole deck fits in your hand now because you recycled all of your bs, so with some draw and energy generation you're infinite! It's great with dead branch. It's great with pyramid. It's great with snecko. It turns slimes from -1 energy to +1 energy. It opens up cards like amplify and consume, that don't exhaust themselves but can only be usefully played a finite number of times. If going infinite isn't viable for your deck and your scaling plan is something like creative AI or Hello World or Magnetism, you now have an unlimited supply of recycle targets. Much like the meteor strike synergy or the X cost synergy, these powers themselves can also just be recycled for frontloaded energy if you're in a short fight. You do kind of need reasons to pick recycle, but it is an insanely versatile card; much more so than I think a lot of people realize.

Btw, the meteor strike infinite didnt need multicast both before and after sneko. Because 3 plasma orbs = 6 energy evoked. 5 for meteor strike+1 for skim is 6. With sneko, 3 (max) for meteor strike + 3 (max) for skim is also 6. No need for multicast (but its nice insurance)

weird. I found this very hard to watch. his inability to take advantage of the obvious infinite he set up, mostly because he chose snecko, but also his inability to do basic math in his head had me gritting my teeth far too often for it to be enjoyable.

@@thomasneal9291I’m sure in his 7k hours that he’s definitely miscounted the math and faced the consequences enough so that he will prefer to double check with a calculator just to be sure. It’s not that he can’t, it’s just that sometimes, human error exists, and a calculator is more consistently accurate. He also plays the other character(s) currently after a few clad runs at least, so brain fatigue can be a factor too Edit: and sometimes baalor chooses not to do the obvious thing because he wants to try something novel, more entertaining maybe, idk. I’m still surprised he’s still playing even after all these years and hasn’t gotten bored yet. Yes each run is unique but there’s definitely many that seem very similar to each other. He’s a streamer primarily, not a gamer, though they’re definitely very close. Choosing the most optimal gameplay option may not be the most optimal option to keep his audience engaged/intrigued/attentive. Someone does something or something happens that’s unexpected/surprising -> others pay attention more. Also, out of genuine curiosity, why do you keep coming back to the channel, for years even, if most of what you have to say are criticisms/judgments against him or his play style?

Boss swap into P box is always fun, recently had a watcher run where the boss swap p box included a Blasphemy, Judgement, Omniscience and Lesson learned. Took a bunch of damage Act 1 without defends, but we really didn't care because with Lesson Learned I could just always rest without having to worry about Upgrades.

Agreed. The deck was frequently bricking on turn one (with Boot Sequence, it only had 4 slots for cards to draw that advance the deck's plan), but with sneko, it can brick on any turn.

If the card isn't drawn (i.e. taken from the top of the draw pile and put into the hand), but is instead "put" into the hand (Seek, for instance, or Secret Technique/Violence etc.), then the cost isn't randomized.

Baalor doesn't like winged boots much either, but it's still far better than matryoshka for the flexibility it offers. It can be shop, campfire, elite, or if you're feeling bold and daring a ? room.

The best scenario with matryoshka is that you get 1 uncommon relic weaker early game for an extra relic in the late game, when your deck probably has most if not all it needs to win anyways. Having almost any other uncommon relic immediately will arguably snowball you into more power than one extra common/uncommon relic in act 3 anyways. So in almost all cases, all matryoshka does is make you weaker. Sincerely, definitely not biased fuck matryoshka gang

Baalor once said that if you use orbs as your main source of damage or block you should use your cards for the other. Like if you're channelling lots of frost you would be better off taking damage cards, but if you channel lots of lightning take defensive cards. I tend to agree with that, but early on in act 1 you tend to want to take damage cards first as act 1 elites can brutally murder defect if you can't output high enough damage.
