A friend of mine had a mouse problem. He set up a compressed air tank, a section of PVC pipe, an air valve, and a photosensor. He put some peanut butter inside the tube just last the photosensor. When the mice went for the peanut butter interrupting the photocell released the compressed air launching the mouse about 3 meters head first into a steel plate over a bucket. Local cats learned to recognize the meal-time gong. Rats have more mass than mice but an adaptation of this method may have some value...

The best mouse / rat trap is a large bucket with 6 inches of water in it and either a hinged plank that drops and auto resets or a slippery round rod that spins when unbalanced on it. You could also try adding a barrier or something slippery / not climbable around the tree stump and prevent them from jumping onto the tree from some other surface.

Try wrapping the trunk of the tree with metal garden fence, and connect an electric fence charger to it. Isolate the fence from the tree with pvc pipe or pool noodles

Ecologists in Brittain did a study on that: asking locals to keep the rodent bodies their cats brought home. The neighborhood pet cats were definitely keeping the local mice population contained. They were better at it, than any of the wild predators; who were choosing to raid poultry yards, rather than chasing mice for a meal [foxes.] Mice, however, are not the same as rats. Rats tend to be a City problem, not a rural problem. Cats don't eat the mice; they are toys for the cats. Rats are truly a different problem; honestly, I think cats would not be the best answer. What I would question, why aren't there any local predatory birds that would eat the rats? What about the local snakes? That's why rats AREN'T a problem in rural areas in Brittain and the States: we have owls, falcons, hawks, eagles that would much rather eat a big rat, than a small mouse. The same is true of snakes here in the desert southwest of the USA. I have a family of Great Horned Owls in my city neighborhood that we have to keep little pets undercover at night, or those owls will make a meal of them.

@@Objective-Observer I'm in a different part of Australia to Turner but the same principle applies: our native wildlife can't reliably compete with rats OR cats. Sure, the snakes and crocodiles will eat rats, cats, dogs and people, but the possums and other marsupials can't protect themselves. As such, cats, rats, rabbits, cane toads and pigs are an absolute NIGHTMARE for our local wildlife. Not to mention all the introduced fish species. Native predators like the Wedge Tailed Eagle have a great time eating them, but they just don't have the numbers. Finding ways to kill feral cats without harming native wildlife is a surprisingly big industry here. The last one I read about was automated poison sprayers, since cats would lick themselves clean and die from the poison whereas other animals wouldn't.

I found a way to make a snap trap bait robbing proof. All you need is: 1: snap trap/traps 2: cheap dog cobble or dog cookies/biscuits. ( the crunchier the better, and you can set multiple traps with one cookie / biscuit.) 3: hot glue. 4: hot glue gun, candle, or if you have a gas stove you can just use the burn. (But I do find the hot glue gun works best) All you do is hot glue either a dog food kibble or a chunk of dog biscuit 2 the trigger of the track. The only time I have seen a mouse or a rat steal the bait is if it was already snapped and most of the time they were crawling over the other rats remains. I have had one rat that was able to get the bait without getting snapped and I have found then he would chew the pain at the back of the trap to trigger it. For best results I have found that if you leave it unset for the first night and leave it unset randomly you will catch more. I had one rat that we nicknamed Einstein figure out how to snap the traps so what I started doing is leaving the traps unset and when I noticed he started going for the bait straight away I started setting the Trap and bye-bye Einstein. That is when I started doing the random unset traps. Or if you take multiple strips of chicken wire and put some kind of rubber between the chicken wire in the tree you can Electrify to wear when the mouse climbs between the two chunks of chicken wire they complete the circuit and get a good job it's more used for squirrels but I'm pretty sure work but I'm pretty sure work on rats as well

Honestly this next solution is 100% gonna work. Aluminum foil tape around the circomferance of the trunk. But with a shocking twist (or wet). HOW TO: 2 lines of foil tape going around the tree trunk, taped close together but not touching. One is positive, one is negative. Rat tries to climb base of trunk touches lines, closes the circuit and explodes, obviously. You can use those popular fly zappers as the circuit. . If thats too cruel for your liking, you can use the 2 lines as a capasitive sensor and set off the plastic explosive detonating the whole tree instead (or 10 of your cat repellant devices).

Most entertaining. Rats are far craftier and intelligent than many give them credit for. Had a feeling they would get used to the deterrent very quickly. As they can jump quite a distance a tree collar or some such device would be of no use to you. They will also get use to people quite quickly, learn your speed and how much time they have to escape if you come after them, and when they are out of your reach. Glad you got your tangerines in the end.

Hey, i realize i'm 2 years late, so the likelihood of you ever seeing this is beyond _miniscule_ but, i figured i'd give it a go anyways. If you've not yet had any success with other conventional (or not so much) traps, i got one for you that's a guaranteed winner, we use em on the wee island i live on, in the barns and generally speaking one trap will catch between 1 - 2 dozen rats a night before their are so many rats in the damn thing that they just climb over each other to escape. Anyways, what you need are some five gallon buckets you don't mind yanking the handles off of, and some long & skinny plastic bottles. Bonus points for a plank of wood and a brick/cinder block for each trap. The Build: Rip the wire handle off the 5-Gal (whatever-many liter, sorry, i think it's like, 13-ish?) bucket, then take your handle and hammer it out into a nice straight line, or use the straight section of an old wire hanger, or just some metal rods if you got em. It's relatively important that the metal bit be nice and straight, as it's going to form your "Axle" for the trap. Now that you've got this straight bit of metal wire, heat up one end to nice orange-y glow with a torch and then poke a hole through the perfect center of the cap of your tall skinny bottle (Smart Water is my preferred brand for this) and then one at the dead center of the bottom of the bottle. At this point, you likely know where i'm going with this. Once your metal rod cools down, thread it through the water bottle and make sure that it's spinning nice and freely on the rod, like a paint roller. Now you're gonna shove that metal rod's ends into the two holes left behind in the bucket from when you yanked the handle off, so now you should have a bucket with a free-spinning balance beam bridging the gap. Setting the Trap: So, now that your trap's built, you gotta bait it, what you wanna use is any brand of creamy Peanut Butter, honest to god, the shit is like crack for rodents, they just can not help themselves. Take your peanut butter and slather a thin strip around the bottle roughly equidistant from both edges of the bucket. Now, bring the trap to wherever you want to set it, put it down, and now finally you know what the plank and brick are for; Lay the plank as a bridge leading up to one of the ends of your spinning balance beam, and tuck the brick/cinderblock behind it so heavier rodents don't cause it skip back and fall, potentially knocking the whole bucket over, as they climb up. Et Voila! You've got the cheapest, easiest to make, most effective rodent trap ever devised by man. If you don't want to catch & release the buggers you catch somewhere in the woods away from any homes, add like 6-10in (I'm gonna guess like 18-24cm) of water at the bottom and the rats/mice/voles/whatever kinda rodents will simply drown eventually leaving you with a no-mess kill, unlike those old-school flipper traps which when they rarely do work will sometimes straight up fucking decapitate the animal, or worse, remove one of it's limbs and end up killing it in a horrifically inhumane way. Extra Credit: If you do find yourself catching hundreds of rats a week like we did in all the barns on the property, you can then take the detainees to your local pet store or reptile sanctuary and sell them for live feed or fresh-never-frozen dead feed and make a frankly ludicrous amount of extra cash on the side. (Seriously, i figured the dude at the Reptile Sanctuary'd offer me like 20cents a head, he offered me 20$ for each bucket that had like a dozen rodents in it, bringing in 5 or 6 of those a day, every day for a month added up quick.) Anyways, cheers, thanks for taking the time to read my TED talk to whoever sees this, and uh, i'd say good luck with the rat problem, but if you follow the steps above luck shouldn't even be a factor, honestly.

About the snap spring trap: don't pile the bait on the trigger in one lump. Instead, put a tiny amount UNDER the trigger. The rodent will smell the bait then struggle to get it and it will be the last thing little Mickey does.

I made horizontal platform around the trunk of the tree. Rats and other rodents can't climb horizontal surfaces. 25cm from the trunk is wide enough. But it had to be at least 30cm off the ground. I've hung the disk with rope from brances. The clearance around the trunk has to be relatively tight, not more than 2cm. But it's really effective cheap and without a lot of maintenance.

I like using chicken wire and electric fence transformer. It's a pretty good deterrent , but I don't know how many access point to the tree you have. It might help you out. Rats also like chicken coops too. Eggs and chicken feed brings them in. Rats don't get use to electricity and much safer then poisoning. I forget - use old garden hose and zip ties by cut down the length of the hose to hold the wire so it will not ground out. You'll figure it out.

They shape everything apples to square melons, which is then sold at a considerably bigger price than the regular stuff, and i'd think that then means that they aren't effin up the taste. Attach sound transducers to the branches and have them turn on when a rat is detected climbing on the branches. Sound transducers work by sending the vibration into the surface. The rat being attached to the surface would then hear the sound as it travels through their feet, to their inner ear directly. This is the same as the hearing aids that work by sending vibration through your jaw bone rather than sound directly into the ear. The advantage of using this is that it's likely to freak the rat out more than normal sound, and it will also be relatively quiet to people in the house, but loud to the rat attached to the tree.

Are you familiar with GoodNature A24 rat trap? Made by a New Zealand company to eliminate invasive rats from an island. Very well regarded although a bit pricey... not sure how you could hook it into your channel... maybe retrofit one with a compressor replacing the CO2 cartridges? Or maybe make your own with pneumatics or a linear actuator? Good luck!

I found instead of putting the bait on a platter that is easily licked clean, put it under the platter. They get a free sample and when the get greedy and move the platter... I bait the underside of my trap bait pans. Flip it up, bait, place more on the floor under the pan, and wait for them to clean the plate on the bottom.

We had sparrows that helped themselves to our apricots. Two trees sharing ½ meter squared space on a 10 acre lot. The nasty feathered ratasauruses would peck two, three, four holes in a just ripe apricot then off to the next one! Dirty buggers! Put shock pads all around the base of the tree. You could also block off the entrance at the base and make a shock rat ladder the only way up. Somehow code the rungs of the ladder to be active at different times so they cannot learn which ones are safe

There is a guy that put a free spinning paper towel roll in the middle of a 5 Gallon bucket. They walk far enough onto it they roll off into water and die or you can relocate them without using water. By far the best and most clever trap I've seen. Has even worked on squirrels! So you know a rat or mouse can't be to big.

Okay... We have rats and rock squirrels destroying our garden and especially of all things the young Carolina Reaper Pepper plants. My best solution has been a .25 caliber FX Impact Air Rifle. Traps have been a mixed bag for controlling the buggers.

We had a rat problems at our farm, I installed 850nm IR lights around the building and we purchased 2 ATN 5x20 night scopes and mounted them on our Air rifles. We have a blast ridding them. We don’t poison them cause when they die other animals will eat them. Best night ever we scored 24 in under 4 hours. Inside the building we used time-delay electric shock pads when they step on both plates it senses the continuity and gives them a lethal dose of electricity and in the morning we go collect them and feed them to the birds & possums on the back side of our farm.

@@DinnerForkTongue I used to shoot rats for a local farmer. Pellets cost money and back then Promethius pellets cost a fortune (100 was more than 1000 standard pellets). Therefore I spent a hell of a lot of time with my bolt action air rifle practicing. My grouping was so tight at 25m basically you had one small hole for 10 shots. I was using the targets with 5 individual 1 inch targets on one sheet. When your shooting is that good you can take a head shot every time. I had to use promethius because of the steel body as it was an organic farm. Hence no poisons etc and no lead allowed. I managed to get better kill rates with the rabbits too. Use a shotgun and you'd get one and the buggers would sit underground all day. Shoot them with a supressed air rifle and you could easily get 50 in a day. When the local butchers found out where they were from they paid me near £1 a head. A hell of a lot of money back then for a kid. This was the early 1980's.

To prevent them getting used to it over time, I suggest: 1. recording your voice telling the rats to piss off, with multiple variations and have that play in random rotation with varied time periods. 2. Program variations for the crank to turn so it's not the same predictable rhythm every time. 3. To make the lighting easier on the eyes, use a bunch of different directional lights aimed at various parts of the tree, and make the lights move around a bit (while aimed at the tree) when they turn on. Putting them on a bent Axel attached to a small motor would do the trick.

Place 1/4 grid screen firmly around tree base.. Atleast 2-3 ft..Use small rubber or pvc spacers to keep it away from trunk..ceramic work best. About 1/8" to 1/4"... Next, make a skirt of any material rubber, pvc, or tarp..Raise about 3-4" off ground..Attach a dc generator to metal grid and use a motion sensor via 18650 battery to activate metal grid..Anything small that can climb under skirt up tree, will only go so far before 1 million dc volts zaps them..Works! I grow citrus in Texas..safe for cats..

put a coil around the tree base. connect the wire to the 110V phase. Boom. done. rats fall off the tree and cant climb it. IF you dont want to hudr them use a transformer to step down the voltage. I used 12V DC to avoid snails from climbing on some plants. works like a charm.

You could fashion a conical guard halfway up the base of the tree so the rats physically can't climb up the tree. If they use other trees to get to the tangerine tree put guards around those too.

Set up a five gallon bucket with a few inches of water in it and a ramp running up to it, then set up a drop trap or rolling barrel trap, or add some perlite to the water until there’s enough floating to support a handful of sunflower seeds. The rats fall in and drown and can’t jump out due to the water.

2 large Copper tape strips (bigger than rat length) around the trunk with a small gap in between the strips. Hook it up to 18v or more, rat gets a shock when they complete circuit

Just a simple hoop of tin wrapped around the trunk like a possum hoop on a telegraph pole will prevent the rats from climbing up the tree, no power required and non invasive.

You could try adding to contact points around the stump of the tree and running power through them so when the rat steps on the 2 contact points it will give them a little zap

Might try making clear plastic ball that's slightly larger than a ripe Tangerine and put them around each of them as they ripen. I figure that it can be thin as long as its surface is smooth enough that rats can't get enough purchase on it to bite through.

@@starandfox601 a smooth rounded surface. My thought is that if the surface is slick the rat can't get purchase when reaching up to it and the shape ablates the bite's force. It should be simple and cheap enough to be test. Though now I'm also wondering about wrapping them in two layers of aluminum foil with an epoxy and irritant between the two layers.

Sheet metal collar 2 ft off the ground that is parallel to the ground. Maybe a ft wide. They use something like this on ships rope to the docks. Too high to jump onto. Also make sure tree is trimmed away from fence and roof. They will jump down.

Somehow everything is unnecessarily complicated. After all, there is a simple proven method: first of all, it is tedious to exclude access to the tree from everywhere except the trunk, then wrap the trunk with plastic film and spread it with any non-drying gel, and cover the top with a plastic skirt to prevent rain from washing off!

Hey maybe you could also set up something with a fan blade and/or horns to also make sound. And then have the circuit randomly select if it turns it on or not. Also making a bit of a "hovercraft" might be good to scare away the rats with it moving around (just tie it down somewhere so that it does not go completely wild and get lost or destroyed)

This is definitely different from other traps and deterrents for rats out there. Always good to think differently. Best, worst would be to hook up a barb-wire around the entryways and electrify them.

Enjoyable.......I had rats eating my Avocados.......doing the math, I figured I could tolerate them eating less then 10% of the crop and decided to share. It does get on your nerves when they only partially eat the fruit. Solved that by removing damaged fruit to a pile for the Coyotes to enjoy. Enjoy watching them bring their pups using trail cams.

I experienced somewhat similar "guest invasions" to my tomatoes while living in the Texas heat and dry conditions. The neighborhood squirrels (cousins of your rat friends) were helping themselves even to the green, unripe fruits and then dropping them to the ground with no more than a few bites. Really frustrating to see all those tomatoes that had been wasted. I found out that the squirrels were seeking moisture wherever they could find it. It wasn't that they suddenly loved bitter-tasting immature fruit, but they were after some badly needed moisture. I changed my growing method over to using hydroponic planting containers (storage tubs, dirt, internal shelf with access and draining holes, PVC tube for adding water to the bottom). The sun was too intense in the previous garden location, so moving the plants close to the shade by the house helped both the plants and also with reducing the squirrel attacks. I did NOT consider adding a free water or lemonade drink stand to keep the furry visitors off the plants as that would have only encouraged the little buggers to stick around the yard more. So, I'm a little confused about your situation, Turnah. I thought you were in the kitty express lane who came in for the dark-hours visits? (INTENDED TEASING HERE!) Why aren't they chasing the rats and keeping your rodent friends away from the garden? (NO need to tell me >> they are well-fed domestics, unlike the feral) Maybe you need to reconsider your kitty situation after all? *poke in the eye* Perhaps this is the way the kitties are getting back at you and they have signed an agreement with the rat kids? *smirk*

Sean Woods had some rat birth control that he used. They have a lifespan of 2 years. Place the stuff around where yhou see it and you'll know when to refill you'll in 2 years have no rats.

Get some copper strips or whatever. Hook up a mini solar electric fence box to said copper rails. And listen to the squeals of delight as a high amperage tickle playfully nugdes them either- off the tree. Or out of their mortal shell...
