Hi my name is Jeffrey Koller from Reading,Pa. If you think it’s quite down in Virginia you need to go to British Columbia. I was there in 1988 hunting. We road horse back 18 miles up the mountain .We were there for 5 days at10000 ft elevation. We didn’t here anything but Mother Nature. It was an experience that I will never forget. As close to heaven as I’ve ever been. I enjoy the videos of you and your family, keep up the good work. God bless you all.

Many years ago, I managed a 900 ac tree farm. Fall or spring was when we dug and balled trees. Soil types and moisture condition also determine when to dig. You need the soil to stay on the roots and not lets the roots dry out. As a general rule of thumb, it takes about 10 inches of ball for every inch of trunk dia. It would be difficult to successfully transplant bare root stock the size you showed under the power lines and remember, it you are crossing state lines, nursery stock may need to be inspected.

I have transplanted many trees and shurbs in south Mississippi and fall and winter is the best time. However you can transplant anytime but you have to water a lot in the summer time. I noticed that you were looking back when unloading your tractor. First make sure no one or anything is behind you and look straight ahead and then back off. You can't steer the back wheels and that is when you get off the ramps. I ha e been unloading tractor and equipment for nearly 60 years and haven't lost anything yet. Have fun and stay safe

Hi Mike, Your land in Pennsylvania is moist from the rain you are receiving. As the dormant time of year is approaching, I would say start planting at your convivence before it freezes. I'm 79 and was raised in northern Ohio. While in the FFA (Future Farmers of America) we planted hundreds of white pines, red pine, locust, and others for various farmers every fall. Now living in south Texas, the best times to plant trees are in November and December. Watering every few days helps. Have a great day!

Mike, my Grandpa told me that pine trees have a sort of pattern for growth. That is: the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap. I have noticed that he was right on. As far as transplanting it seems to me that a good time to do that is in the early fall (now) so they get a chance to spread some roots and when spring comes they will be ready to start growing. I suppose spring is also a good time to transplant because generally there is a lot of moisture because of spring rains. Just my two cents worth. Thanks for taking us along, always interesting! J.R.

In general, wait until after the first frost to transplant trees. Most trees and shrubs transplant best in fall as opposed to spring. Transplanting can be done up until the ground is frozen. Transplants will root over winter, giving them the best chance to survive dry spells the following summer.

When I was 17 years old I dug and burlaped a bunch of pine trees and it's really hard work and theres an art in doing it! And very time consuming!. We started in November and went through the winter until the ground froze up hard!. I would see if you could rent a hydraulic tree spade for skid steer and dig them out and place them in wire baskets for transport. You could unload them with straps at home with the excavator and dig the new holes to plant them!. But when you haul them home lean them back and cover them with a tarp to stop wind burn damage. This is just an idea from my own personal experience. I'd say your close on the weight of the bear maybe a little more I killed one with my bow years ago in Canada and it was 350 lbs.

Well, we used a skid steer with a Vermeer tree spade, wire baskets and burlap squares for most, but if we had to dig a smaller one by hand, we would do our best to shape a ball from where the stem entered the ground, making the ball diameter proportional to the stem size. So, a 1 inch trunk, having a root ball of soil and roots, 10-12 inches in diameter, like a basketball. However, try not to cut off too many of any bigger roots, this sometimes varies with the species.

Good morning Mike! Spring is the best time to transplant pines for minimal work to re-establish. If you do it now, plan on some die back - ball and burlap - with as much rootball as you can handle... then again - white pines are super cheap and super fast - may be better to buy bigger local or transplant little ones...

Good Saturday morning Morgan family! Fall and Spring are good times to transplant. I have a quick attach v shaped spade/root bucket. It is great to get under the rootball and around the trees to transplant. Also, if transplanting in the spring, I suggest an ibc tote for water. Each tree gets a 5 gallon bucket with a 1/2 hold in the bottom. Fill the bucket, and it slowly waters the tree. I also add a fertilizer stick too once a year to help with growth. good lucK!

I worked at a Plant Nursery & landscaping supply the whole time I was in High School. I worked after school part time & all day on Saturdays & Full Time all summer long from 15-18 years old. We raised in fields from seedlings from our greenhouse. So when trees got 6-8 feet tall we would dig then up from the fields for Transplant. Rule of Thumb on White Pines Dig then up in early fall before the first Frost!!! Burlap under the dirt ball then tie up & around the base of trees then wet the burlap good & transport. Setting them out Undo the burlap from the base of tree but bury burlap with it. Because it will decompose in the ground & roots will grow through the burlap. Purpose of the burlap to hold that dirt ball around the roots to assure it survives. But answer to your question on white pine is early fall before first frost hits the ground. So in WV I’d say late sept to mid October. Check your area to know usually when first frost is & transplant before the first frost and you’ll be more likely to succeed. Edit: I’d focus on 6-8’ tall pines to dig up and transport the smaller ones will survive easier because the roots aren’t so long yet and not much disturbance happening to the root system by digging them up. Don’t worry they’ll be 25 feet tall in 3 years, white pine grows fast. The landscapers seemed to want 6-8’ tall for planting because they’re more successful in planting & surviving. Also if you transport them best to do it with a trailer with sideboards or covered with burlap over the body of the tree to minimize wind damage on the ride from WV to PA. That’s the Best I can help ya Mike.

Ive used an excavator with a big bucket to transplant or store small trees and shrubs on remodel projects. Just scoop it up, keeping as much soil as you can and put it on a pallet with a one side to lay it against, wrap it with burlap, build a cage with some 2x material, or a box of plywood to contain it and keep it moist until replant. Replant with some transplant root enzymes after pruning exposed roots. With the pallet we could move it around easily if needed. It works amazingly well; my landscape guy and designer think it's crazy- just buy new stock they say... but it works. I would say the ideal times would be late fall before ground freeze and early spring after thaw, but I've done it at any time with few losses- usually because we didn't keep enough dirt, or neglected water. I saved a small Japanese maple for a good customer, scooped it up and stored it for a few months, landscape guy was going to hand dig and such for 3500 dollars, for a few hundred we stored it, and if it died the owner would buy a new one for 1000. it's a grand tree now Good Luck, always enjoy your videos

Considering the distance involved transplanting will be difficult but possible. Spruce or the white pine never go full dormant. generally pruning and transplanting work best in the fall and early spring. With wild trees not nursery grown the roots are going to be why it survives the transplanting. You need to get a large area so you do not damage a lot of its roots and have the hole prepared ASAP at the new site. Myself I'd pick the most perfect smaller White pines, get some grow bags off of amazon 7 gallon ones... and some potting soil made for pines for the transport.(or use soil from that area.) The key is not letting the roots go dry.. Smaller the better on the trees so you get all of it's roots. Even those 4 foot ones you want have long horizontal roots by now and you won't be able to transport it with out killing the tree. I'd go with 1 foot tall ones. Do most of the work by hand and shovel. Except digging the new holes, which should be up to three times bigger then the original hole filled with enough new top soil mixed with the base material. keep the hole wet for the first few weeks. It's trial and error and be prepared that the effort put forth may yield no results. The 1 foot trees will be 4 feet in about a year and a half.

I had a company from CT come to me about 5’ pines 20 plus years ago, offered me $20 each per tree. They sold same trees in CT for approx $150 to $200. Point is 2 to 3 guys with spade shovels dug around trees then popped trees out of ground with soil. Lifted trees into root ball wrap, burlap works because it breaths and you can water trees if delayed in replanting. The spades they had were curve opposite of regular shovel. This turned handles away from trees so made work easier to work around tree and easier prying tree out of ground. Went fast, of course they did this a lot. Oh yeah, one thing they did first once tree was selected, tied a rope to larger bottom branch and candy coned the tree like wrapping a Christmas tree for shipping. That folded branches up and into and towards center and compacted tree so they could get more in truck and protects branches from damage and makes handling trees easier. Those small pines less than 3 to 4’ should be easy. Pines like sandy softer soils so little easier to dig in. Spring would be best time to dig and replant as trees are dormant and any potential frost wont heave trees out of ground. We have Christmas tree plantation and in Maine spring is best season because frost vs fall planting. If you dont suffer much frost prob can plant fall…

Here in south east Texas we haven’t been able to grow anything much less grass . I got a new zero turn mower almost two months ago haven’t been able to use it yet . Our grass is dead, from looks we may not need the mower until late fall or next year. I will need to weed eat in spots that’s it ! We have had some rain but it’s just a few minutes and very little. I’ve been measuring 99- 102 in the shade on my porch almost every day some days even higher .
