Good to be able to catch up with another of your videos Gord while my wife is having one of her needed naps as she continues to slowly decline with her Dementia & Parkinson's. I'm Glad I did as this is a beautiful little bowl with very interesting grain & beautiful finish. Great helpful commentary as always. Keep well my friend, Don from South Australia.

It's nice to hear from you, Don. I'm so sorry about your wife's condition. I wish you the best as you deal with it. I have an appointment for a Petscan on Oct. 12 to find out how far my cancer has migrated. Once I get the results of this test the Cancer Center here in Red Deer will be able to decide how to deal with it. It sounds like they are leaning toward chemotherapy. There's always something! As we begin to prepare for winter, I guess you are preparing for summer. As I am not a big fan of winter I would much rather be where you are for the next 6 or 7 months! Oh well, winter is nothing new to Canadians. I hope you have a good summer, my friend. Color me jealous!! LOL! Take care, .....Gord

I am absolute novice at wood turning from Wales in the UK. I've been using my lathe for two days but collecting wood from my local woods when walking my dog and cut the blanks for bowls all end grain. I then realised I may have wasted time and energy carrying logs on my shoulder. Your video was a real relief to find. Thank you.

It is so good to see just a simple end grain turning project that is nothing to fancy but shows the correct way to use the tools to produce a lovely end grain bowl with great wood grain. And it was a good reminder to keep our tools razor sharp. Thanks Gord Great video

Hi Gord! Thank you so much for the Shout Out, dear friend, and for your kind words! I love that little end grain bowl, the grain is beautiful, and The hook tool is really interesting, I have seen some homemade tools in Latin America in which they use an old wrench in which they give a sharp edge to the circular end. I never use it but saw people doing it with great skill and the hook tool seems to work in pretty much the same fashion. I bet it has its learning curve but must be a great one for end grain since you are working from the base towards the mouth in the inside (to have grain fibers support) and that is not an easy task with other cutting tools (scrappers aside, which also should work if very sharp). Great video and my apologies for the late comments, I am way behind in watching the videos to the channels I am subscribed, too much work and travel. Cheers and once again, my appreciation! Cheers! Daniel

+Daniel Vilarino You're very welcome, Daniel. I don't do a Shout Out very often but when I see something as exceptional as that hourglass I think everyone should know about it. The hook tool is great but I need to do a lot more work with it. I find it a bit tricky but I'm sure I felt the same way when I first used a bowl gouge or any other turning tool. I won't even start to tell you about my initial frustration with the skew chisel!! Late comments are better than no comments. I'm guilty of getting too busy with other things and sometimes missing videos by other turners for weeks at a time. I do try to catch up eventually. Thanks for watching, Daniel. @@GordonRock1 appreciate the return. Its not as bad as it has been brother, 9/2/14 I was given 90 days to live, stage 3 lung cancer, right side only, entered into chemo and radiation treatments and BEAT the cancer just not all the side effects of the treatments, LOL. Hey, I'm still on the top side ofthe grass, LOL. I took a friend to a hospital last week, he did not have a ride. I walked right into a wall of germs I guess. They say hospitals are the worst. I came down with the bronchitis and tonsillitis, just one of those things that happen. Guess I still haven't learned I not the guy I was before cancer. Other than this little episode, not bad. I'm still active. Kinda forced retirement so I turn to my backyard woodcraft shop and I rebuilding/remodeling a 31ft travel trailer I hope to put on some land in the ozarks....... Take care of yourself Gord, I'm now 62 years old and I can still remember my mothers home cure for the common cold. I've never ate cooked onions again since 1965, LOL. have a good one brother.

I picked up a lathe and some chisels for xmas but im really struggling. I cant get anything to turn round without the chisel biting (stopping the piece turning) and/or ripping out big chunks of wood :/
@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 5 жыл бұрын
Lance, with no idea what your turning process is, this is a very tough question to answer. How much experience do you have turning? What particular chisels or gouges are you using? Are you riding the bevel? It may be that you are pushing the gouge in too straight and just tearing pieces out instead of riding the bevel and slowly removing the wood along the length of the blank. Can you give me a bit more detail? If you like I will make a video demonstrating the basics but I'm down with a very bad cold right now and it will be quite awhile before I can get to it. I would suggest doing a search of Mike Waldt's videos. He has a series of videos where he covers the basics on a number of different chisels and gouges. Sorry if this isn't a real good answer but it's the best I can do right now. Please let me know if I can help more in the future and I will try my best to help you. Best of luck to you, Lance. I remember starting turning and it was a fairly frustrating time. I hope I can help more once I'm able to get back to the shop! Take care, .....Gord

Great video. This is the first one of yours I've seen. I subscribed and I'll be back ! I am a newbie at turning, and a super-newbie at endgrain turning. I have a total newbie question (be kind). At about 7 minutes you are talking about reducing the diameter of the bowl. You say be sure to cut towards the tail stock so you are cutting downhill. I'm confused and hardly know how to ask this question. You said this is endgrain turning, and the grain runs parallel to the axis...OK, I've got that. You say turn the outside of the bowl from the center towards the tail stock. Is cutting downhill because you are reducing the bowl diameter, or is downhill because of the end you picked to be the bottom of the bowl?
@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 7 жыл бұрын
+Abter1 Rockville1 Think of the grain of the wood as a bunch of drinking straws. If you cut from the tailstock end towards the headstock, cutting UP to shape the bowl, you would be cutting into and across the end of the straws. The straws would be fighting back, if I can use that term. On the other hand by cutting toward the tailstock and shaping the bowl down toward the bedways you are cutting across the grain in a direction that lets your gouge slide across the straws and not having them tend to flip up as they would in the opposite direction. Does this make sense? I'm not sure I'm explaining this very well. Please let me know if it's not making sense and I will try to put a short video together to explain it. Sorry I took so long to answer. Somehow I missed your comment. Thanks for watching. I appreciate the support!! Take care, .....Gord
