Using a korean bow, I usually do a slight string twist as part of getting the arrows to fly straight, not curved. Basically, it is part of my khatra (a bit to the front, a bit of torque, a bit of string twist). From my experience, over-doing one of the techniques (like string twist) just reduces accuracy. While a strong string twist clearly throws the arrow to the side at the beginning of the flight (which is good to get it clear of the bow), I doubt that it is as effective for curve shooting as the nock offset you demonstrated so nicely at the end of your video. After all, it was just a movie.

String twist was more used to make a not quite tuned arrow to fly better. In the movie he was not aiming at the tree, but the camera doesn’t show the target being in the back of the tree. A camera play is not a good measure. I took it as a good method to shoot further untuned - lighter - arrows.

@@CharliesRunningArchery You can take that scene as a proof that he was a “well above average” archer. That group past the usual (150m) training distance is impressive.

Maybe you would see the results better at a longer distance? I think there might not have been enough time for the spin to take effect on the flight... Either way, I'd love to see like a week's worth of practicing this in a timelapse! :)

listen to the sound the string twist makes the arrow jump away from the bow so it doesnt slide down the lenght of the bow

In my experience, what the string twist does is, that it moves the arrow's end - where the nock is - in-line with the tip (since when you load your arrow, it's slightly off-set due to being not a center shot bow, and depending on the arrow pass width), making the arrow flight straight, nullifying the archer's paradox - if executed correctly.

That makes sense and it’s very close to what I experienced in video. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting the experiment. My method is a split between james jean and lars anderson. I have an arrow with fletchings on both the point and nock ends, looks like an air to air missile. The shooting method i use is to nock the arrow much higher on the string than normal. And the bow is held at a steeper angle, almost parallel to the ground. Thumb draw, finger draw does not matter much, although i mighy have to try string twist again.

nice video 👍 the string twist is to add more tension to the string and bow limbs so more speed for the arrow this was a technique by imam Tohir due to his short draw length, so he compensated it with a string twist for extra arrow speed and penetration

You can twist the Cring all you want and that arrow will not curve ..in fact it will only make it fly straighter

Spot on. Whet it doest is actually gives a bit of rotation of the arrow which makes it more stable. Basically like a bullet.

Bom trabalho. Só faltou colocar uma câmara filmando na sua lateral; aí seria possível ver a flecha voar fazendo a curva e acertando o alvo. E lembrando que você utilizou um arco turco. E se você tivesse utilizado um arco coreano??.

Arrows drift slightly in the direction of their spin. Twisting may theoretically cause a faster spin, but I doubt it would curve the trajectory in a "C" shaped arc, but I'm no expert. It does look like fun tho! I think I'll try it out. 👍

@@CharliesRunningArchery it's 100% possible to curve shots with normal arrow fletching, but the technique doesn't involve twisting the string! With some calculation, its easy to do, but is tricky to master. There are 3 factors in curving shots 1. Nock the arrow 4-7cm higher or lower than normal. This determines the direction of the curve. The tape on your hand is a good idea since the arrow will cut up your hand while doing this) 2. Cant the bow 30-90°. How far to tilt the bow. This determines the upward flight and angle of the curve. 3. Distance from target. How far the arrow flies in a curve before it swings back to center infront of you. This is the tricky part and requires practice. Turning arrows is easy, but actually hitting what you are aiming for is another story. Twisting the string would be sooo much easier and cooler imo. I just found this channel recently. You have cool content and I wish I had a place to run and shoot like you have.

At one part of the movie didn't he rip off one of the fletchings with his mouth to make the arrow twist and turn ?

First you should use male ring (I know it sounds wrong but in Korean it’s called Su Ggak Ji) and one if the arrow he used is light short arrow called aegitsal. Second manjak, which means fully drawing(string touching your right ear) (only tip of the arrow should be out of the bow). And more but too lazy to write. Haha

With thumb draw release the same direction you pull then drop your elbow. By the time your do the curve motion with draw arm, the arrow has already left and what matter is you released straight.

in medieval ghunyah al ramyu archery mameluqe scripture it's called furq (separation: like opening imamah with rotating movement) or farqah or mafruq (the people who do the "furq") , it's purpose to spin an arrow even more (you need to using left wing feathers for furq), like a drill. BUT NOT TO CURVE IT'S FLIGHT, either those movie director gave a wrong interpretation of mafruk or other version of it for the sake of entertainment or just because they don't know? wait until people interpret the purpose of katrah to make arrow's flight like throwing axes in the future. for the sake of entertainment or unknown.... great !!!!!!!!!!!! yeaaah. learn archery from the movie its great, but this mafruk effect on war of arrow movie... its false and sucks. you qurve it perhaps because you are using the right wing feather to do mafruk which is we avoid or else it's because the arrow spine not so suitable for mafruk, remember that mafruk would increase arrow's flight speed wich is spine would affect as well on it.
