Turning LARGE Hitachi EX2500 Mining Hydraulic Cylinder on Lathe | Machining & Welding

This video is of a job we did for a large Hitachi EX2500 excavator hydraulic cylinder barrel off a 250 tonne mining excavator lift cylinder. We had to machine off both barrel end and barrel head flange, machine up a new barrel, then fit and weld on barrel ends to the new barrel. We had electricians through the workshop that week and unfortunately missed out on capturing some great video footage of the new barrel being machined up *sad face*. Watching this in July 2024. Kurtis and Karen have come really far and grown the business and channel to a level other look up to. I have not seen a hydraulic cylinder this size in his workshop later. It is impressive

I was just notified about your reply today. Apparently 6 months after you made it. As far as your comment goes, I see your point. My lathe only has a 6' carriage and a 10" swing and i dont think i haver gotten through a project without a few colorful expletives. Next instead of bleeps just turn up the volume on the machine noise.

Finally i found what i have been looking for at 0:33 seconds on this video clip . I did scour all your videos and it is this video showed 800x4000 on right far end below the lathe . Win Ho lathes ( Taiwan ) are 760x4300 that is their biggest . Thanks a lot Boss .

Always impressed by your work. In my opinion today’s high tech CNC machines remove so much skill from a machinist, not that there isn’t a place for them there certainly is in high volume production, however manual machining is much more satisfying. Just my opinion.

That live centre is a heavy duty aussie made and good for 6 tonne, the barrel is about 2 tonne so she was good 😎👍

Nice job Kurtis, that looks like the cylinders we used to drive the electrodes on our steel furnace, just about the same size with just the one port on the bottom. The hydraulic guy told me they were from a mobile piece, can't remember what though. Enjoyed, cheers mate.

Very impressive to watch, i would have continuous sweat running between my buttcheeks machining this piece and quadrouple check tailstock fixed in position and tight. But luckily i am only a hobbyist and don't have to worry about these kinds of projects. So the steady rest is only installed just in case shit hits the fan to catch the barrel from falling down ?

If you really want your mind blown then just know that is only 1/3 of the weight that the live center is good for. It's a 2 ton cylinder and that live center can hold upwards of 6 tons.

to blow your mind even further, Daintree Tools only rate their centres at 50% capacity it's actually good for 12T! 😱🤯

Hey mate thanks for watching. In my opinion the reason for this failure was from factory submerged arc weld left a hole in the first welding pass. On many excavator cylinders this a common reason. We stock some high volume barrels and rods 😎👍

I notice a lot of smoke while the welding operation is going on. Is there some sort of fan or air system to remove the fumes and smoke. This process does not look very healthy.

Mate can you find any bigger bits to play with. These pieces you are working on just seem to be getting bigger and bigger, no wonder you had to get the big lathe. Beautiful work there, and I notice the shop foreman keeps a close eye on you and your work piece, he looks like a hard worker. Stay safe and COVID free.

So what is happening to the mining excavator that this hyd. cylinder is off while you are working on the replacement cylinder? Is it undergoing a deep maintenance cycle or something like that?

Hey mate. Most of the cylinders we work on are our service exchange cylinders so they have one ready to go straight away and minimal stand down time to change out the cylinder. Downtime = money lost for the customer.
