I struggled the most with the software. Which is odd, since I had a Hyperspin with MAME set up built and stored on a hard drive for 10 years. I put it on the PC, everything mostly worked fine. I ended up having to get a whole new MAME version, new rom set to match and then give up on the more flashy Hyperspin and use Maximus Arcade. You should invest in a smart power strip. It's a special power strip that let you plug in one device as the "master" device. Im really interested in your pc build. Are you doing a tutorial on setting it up in back like you did, to run Maximus arcade? or do you know of any good vids we can check out for the pc board install?
@KillerArcadeGames6 жыл бұрын
I'm working on a video on that now. Its going to take a little longer to release. It may end up being multiple videos, so I might not have that part of the set up out for a couple weeks. Maximus Arcade is very easy to set up if you've already got MAME running. As far as the PC board goes, I dont have anything planned for that just yet. The really short answer is: If you can fit your PC case inside, just do that. If it doesn't, you can just remove the components from the case, you likely won't need the CDROM drive so you put that aside. Then put it all in the cabinet, make sure its all wired properly and you're good to go. I'd recommend using the mounts I linked in the description to keep the board from just sitting on the floor of the cabinet. I will put this video idea on my list and try and get to it.

The USB encoder only works for raspberry pi or a PC. I think you can solder the wires to the Happ buttons and still use the original A1U board, but the joysticks probably won't work since they'd require too many connections.

Love the cab....great job on it so far. Love that you didn't go too far in keeping it a street fighter cabinet and still relatively looks like how you bought it in the store from the outside.. Can you do any videos and more details about where to purchase the mame computer board..Does it come with the games included? or did you have to go through a while rom/emulator process in order to download onto the system? I would love the easy way out and buy whatever has the most classic games that came before like 1998. I.e. killer instincts, dragons lair, space ace, lethal enforcers, castlevania, Indiana jones and the temple of doom, rolling thunder, original punch out, ghostbuster, altered beast, ring king, and paperboy.. The other pandoras box's and raspberry pie comes with all the rest, but not these...which drives me nuts!!! I would be willing to spend the cash if it comes with all the games and systems. Any info or added videos on this would be great appreciated...Thank you for posting this amazing video

Awesome video bro. I eventually want to build one my self but I want to do a 4 controller cabinet with at least a 42 inch lcd screen using hyperspin. How do you compare your front end to hyperspin?

Its a functional front end, but Hyperspin is far prettier. Maximus is very easy to set up and you'll have it running in minutes. Hyperspin is not nearly as easy to get up and running. I spent a couple hours but kept running into issues and eventually just said screw it, and went the easy route lol. I might give it another shot in the future though.

If you're trying to use a PC or Raspberry Pi, yes, you'll need the USB encoder board to plug in the controls to the PC. If you're just interested in changing the buttons on your stock Arcade1Up, you can plug in Happ buttons to the stock A1U board under the control deck. The joysticks won't work though.

Love the video and I’ve been thinking of doing something like this. I have been wondering though.. is it worth spending the $300 on the cabinet if your going to end up swapping everything but the monitor out ? Wouldn’t it be cheaper to build from scratch ?
@KillerArcadeGames5 жыл бұрын
Thats is a good question. Its worth debating if you have the tools and skills to build your own. One drawback to build your own: If you ever play to get custom art you may have trouble finding some that will fit. As of now, there are a couple of companies selling precut nearly perfectly sized art for these cabinets. If you build a cabinet that's an odd shape you will have to work closely with a printer to make the art. Other than that, building your own will be more sturdy and customizable.

I don't like buttons on these cabinets. The joysticks are bad enough -- cheap knock-offs -- but the buttons are probably worse. The Japanese parts -- Sanwa, Seimitsu, or Hori -- are MUCH more sensitive than these but the problem is the MDF board is TOO thick to mount the parts with proper clearance and security and not sized to accept anything but screw-on buttons. You'd have to change the faceplate to a metal replacement install Japanese parts easier. By the time you get done modding this stuff, it's more expensive than buying it stock! I'm not a fan of Happ-iL parts, either. They used those in American cabinets through the late 1990s when arcades were still a thing in North America and I've never liked the response of those sticks. They're not the most sensitive and responsive of controls.

There was one when I first started using MAME in 2005. It wasn’t great but you could play online here and there. I've noticed real arcades, especially Midway cabinets (MK, KI, etc) have bolt mounts. Mine came with screws so I just made sure they wouldn't poke through the top and screwed them into the control deck. So far, it's fine. I was worried since the wood isn't high quality. I was only able to use 3 screws after having to cut off some of the mount to make it fit. It was not an ideal situation but well worth it for Happ controls. If mine fails somehow, I might just bolt them on.

@@KillerArcadeGames That lighted marquee that you're talking about did come out really nice, but he made that thing way more complicated than it needed to be. You could take the measurements of the area for the marquee and go to any crafts store that does custom framing and get a frame for the insert made easy enough and then either do the led light strip like he did or just go to harbor freight or any hardware/home improvement store and get an led light bar and use that. Yeah I've seen a couple of those coin mech stickers and they do look pretty good if you're far enough away from it, personally with growing up in arcades and knowing how much of a beating those front panels took from people accidently kicking it, etc. I'd end up replacing that front panel with a thicker piece of wood anyways so it'd end up being able to hold an actual coin mech.
