The closer “Once A Day” intentionally ends with an unresolved chord that only gets fixed when you play the intro and title track “Circles” afterwards, creating a loop and resolved chord in musical theory. Kevin, I could not agree more when you said “it felt like it was just me and Mac.” I listened to this album the night it came out front to back, with some nice headphones. It was an experience I will never forget. Just me and Mac. Felt like he was truly right there with me. I cried so much. If someone told me I was going to be stuck on a deserted island the rest of my life and I could only bring one single musical record…..it would be circles. Good News is the most perfect song I’ve ever listened to. The instrumentation is absolutely gorgeous and perfectly sets the stage for some of the most heart wrenching lyrics I’ve ever heard. The way he beautifully alludes to the feelings of depression and also death simultaneously is amazing. It’s endlessly relatable to anyone who has ever felt down or fed up in life, but it’s also intensely relatable to people with depression. Like you said, it is like a gift, like an open letter to everyone just saying “I feel the same, we can get through this together, there’s no rush to get to the finish line”. The song saved my life in my darkest times, and it will remain my favorite song of all time for a very long time I can imagine.

I became a mac fan from listening with a 15 year old that was like my nephew. I played a song from swimming and he was all excited I knew of him too. It became our thing, to listen to mac together. He had a hard life, a lot of trauma and things no kid should experience. We were close and when he stayed with us we often played and talked about music. He passed away after I had just seem him in an accidental suicide. Had just jammed to mac with him in my car. It was awful. This album got me through the grief (not that it ever goes away). Surf is my favorite song and I teared up when your dad said he wanted that line tattooed on him. I do as well- right above the tattoo I got to represent my friend who had passed way too soon. I enjoyed seeing your dad become a mac fan- his music really is beautiful. Its so nice to read all the comments too on everyone discovering mac and what he has helped everyone through. Hand me downs is so underrated. Incredible song. Glad he loved it. BTW there is an interview with Jon Brion and Zane Lowe about circles and jons involvement in it. It’s only like 10 minutes. Your dad also points out being able to hear things in the background with the mic. That’s a common theme. There’s actually a lot of sounds on faces like the studio door creaking open and someone accidentally hitting a tambourine etc. mac never cuts it out, and it brings a realness.
