I take a look further into calibrating my TV with an LCD Hisense 65-Inch TV. I calibrate SDR multiple times and failed. I slept on and readjusted my thinking. I simplified the process and I think this way worked out really really well.
Please let me know what you think in the comments, and if you have any questions let me know.

Its really nice yeah. I think what I'll do is get an extension cable so I can always keep my phone plugged in. Because, the charge cables that comes with phones is only 6 feet, and in some situations we might need a longer cable. It really drains the battery on my phone fast, its an old Samsung phone.

I think you did a great job, I totally agree with you. Discover what the TV can do and just adjust it so it is more consistent. Honestly, I love the 6000k picture I got out of my C1, and my eyes don't prefer a cooler temperature, although I do like the picture at 6500k more.

Good to know. I think this comes down to the capability of the TV. some may be able to perform around 5800K, which still looks good if it's balanced. And some TVs, especially OLEDs can definitely get to 6500k and look superb. We've just got to find out the capabilities of the TV in its most accurate mode.

It is very important what you pointed out: going down is preferable. For example, I realized that raising the Low raises the blacks on my C1

Exactly, so Imagine you've just setup your display. The black levels are correct, the color is correct and the contrast is correct. If your calibration was wild with huge sweep color changes then the calibration results are going to effect brightness, color and contrast. Sometimes by a significant amount, and brightness, color and contrast will need to be looked at after the calibration to see if things are correct. This is one benefit of a 2 step and not being so heavy handed with changes. I'm trying to keep changes on the TV as small as I can, especially on these low budget TVs. Then use an 11 or 22 step to fine tune, but if you're having to fine tune by 50 clicks, we have to think about what this is doing internally to the TV and the colors we see. On any of my TVs, whenever I've had to max out a color in either -25 or +25 it hasn't helped and cause the image to look wrong after it's been calibrated. I'm going to start writing down some notes and approach each TV in a similar way. The smallest changes are always better. Getting my Hisense almost fully calibrated in 6 clicks felt great. -6 on blue on a 2 step and I have a near perfect grey scale. Thats what I want to see. Big changes means were going outside of the capability of the TV.

I'm glad to see you're enjoying it as much as me. Ony thing that I do is to switch back and forth between picture mode that's calibrated and one that it's not and the difference is clear, the results with the app are not just a placebo effect, they're very real
@hdmoviesource

That's a great idea! So what I can do is set up a calibrated version which would use calibrated dark, and setup calibrated day mode with the exact same settings as calibrated dark with no color calibration changes and switch between them both. Day modes usable use higher gamma so that needs to be checked also. What I do on my 4K Player is switch between SDR and HDR10. Because this disc allows you to instantly switch between them both. SDR looks better on my cheap office Vizio TV, calibrated and uncalibrated. To me it looks as though the TV is tone mapping HDR content to less than 100 nits, because SDR has more pop and better color. And SDR is actually using 100 nits and calibrated better also at exactly 6500k. Another thing I'm going to do is put SDR, HDR and Dolby Vision modes in their most accurate settings with no calibration and switch between all 3 to see if HDR really is better on the TV that I'm calibrating. Because I could tell a friend that their TV is either better in SDR or not. I would know right away if a TV was poor at HDR If run that test at the beginning. Going to test this on my Hisense and see if the HDR formats are actually better with HDR first, because you don't know what the manufacturers are doing with these cheap TV with HDR. Its a mess from what I've seen so far.

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 Yeah, SDR on these budget TVs looks much better than HDR. It's definitely a dynamic range issue. But, as long as I can a setting that is good to use I'm fine with that and I will force my devices to use SDR.

Yes, Native color gamut of the TV will go beyond Rec709 and allow the TV to perform at its full potential. Auto will clamp the color gamut to Rec709, reducing the colors
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource Жыл бұрын
Very good to know, is there a reason to not use native vs auto?
@plasmatvforgaming9648
@plasmatvforgaming9648 Жыл бұрын
@HD MOVIE SOURCE The only reason would be "accuracy". The problem I have with that is this: WRGB OLED with "accurate" SDR colors looks significantly less saturated than my Plasmas, even with the Pioneer Kuro I got having the option to clamp the color gamut to Rec709. I bet same would happen with a QDOLED or a reference monitor. So for me limiting the performance of the TV brightness and color gamut wise for the sake of accuracy is basically turning down the picture quality we paid for.

Thanks, I did SDR on my CX with 2 point and 10 point and 22 point no problem. All 6500k 0.002 green. HDR and Dolby vision is definitely more difficult im finding. I’m going to try to lower the back light and try again today. The back light I think is too strong my camera jumps around more.

Sounds good Adam. If you can see if you can find a nice balance using the 2 step and then try tightening things up with the 10 or 20 step. I'm noticing each TV has its own quirks and ways of doing things. Going to try HDR on this Hisense soon to see what can be done. Grey scale looks to leaning blue again down the low end of the grey scale. Typical stuff. Good luck 🤞.

I started experimenting with this last night on my LG B8 OLED with a 2 step process in the "Technicolor" mode. I was shocked. The TV was sitting around 7000K with a good 5-8% green tint. That's crazy to me. I had to really take the blues and greens down a good -12 to -15 clicks to get them in check. I pretty much left red alone. I was originally going to try your "leave green alone" method but it wasn't possible on my display. I'm going to go back in and play with the 22 step process (I think it might be 20 step on mine) and see if I can rein it in but the two step did a lot of the heavy lifting where I don't think I'll need to adjust as much in the 22 step. Now that I've seen my display without so much green I can't unsee the green in my other picture modes. Do you think adjusting the tint a little bit before doing this would help? If my TV leans to heavily green should I take the tint a couple notches to magenta before going this or should I keep my settings neutral? It's a shame your OLED is already calibrated. I'd love to see you do one of these on a high-end display with it's out of the box settings.
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 6 ай бұрын
Nice work, yeah, I'm finding that you could leave red alone, or blue alone on OLEDs, Green, you can move around a little bit. Red is a tough color because it can clip very easy.

I also found that my black levels are darker now and I can actually raise my black levels above 53 without raising the black levels. Have you noticed this? I wonder if it’s because when I was doing the 2 part I started on low instead of high. Not sure why I did but I wonder if that’s to blame.
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, depending on how you got to 6500k it could lower or higher black levels. Do you have 11 point or 22 point calibration or only 2? It might be worth trying different methods like, never bosting colors, just cutting colors. If red needs increasing, try decreasing green and blue first. Try different ways. Some TVs respond in different ways.@@michaelviers6461

@@hdmoviesource Great advice. I don't think there's any points where I had to raise any colors, but I could be wrong. I also haven't messed with any of the "luminance" settings under the IRE. I have an LG B8, so it's got a 2 point and a 20 point. I'm also going to go back in and re-try it by doing the "high" 2 point first. I did the low point first (for some reason) and I want to see how this changes my settings. Gamma is set to BT.1886 and my brightness was set to 52 which was to squeeze out a little more near black detail. I tried your method for setting contrast and it wasn't working for me, but I couldn't find that exact app on the iphone. I'll report back.
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 6 ай бұрын
Do you have test patterns? Or a Spears and Munsil 4K test disc? BT.1886 is the correct gamma for SDR. The 2-point calibration might be able to get you close before you start a 20-point. Also, you could try starting at 65-IRE first and balancing from there, or start at 100% white and get white right first and work your way down. It will be harder to get perfect as you go past 20% into some of the darker areas. OLEDs seem to be good, but on my LCDs, below 20% is almost impossible to get right.

i am doing this on a tcl c835 a mini led tv with my phone on a tripod very close to the tv And it looks like the lower grayscale is very cool And just one click in the rgb from 22 point wb correction Is changing the temp like crazy For 2 point wb correction What images im supposed to test them on ? 50-100% ? For high point ? Low point for 5-40%? And then 22 point on 5-100% stacked on the 2point? Im having to push the blue a lot and i don't know if this causes clipping or raised blacks in mini led tvs Should i just lower the red more ? Rather than lowering red a lot and pushing blue Should i do like -5 both channel or -10only red?

30% and 80% ae typically the best for a 2-point calibration. Sometimes it's the limitations of the TVs, certain colors can clip more quickly than others. I would lower or increase by equal amounts, so you don't push one color too far.

@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 7 ай бұрын
cuts for 30% and gains for 80%. When using a 22 point calibration, you need a grey scale for every single point. 5% to 100% with every 5% step, but you can get 4,3,2, and 1% test patterns too. 22 point or higher will yield the most accuracy. But, you can tighten things up from the start with a 2-point calibration.
