So the 385 is now the 295ES or 695ES. I would either go with the 295ES or the 790 and that is a tough choice. Depending on how close your seats are the Sony has more detail but the JVC has higher brightness and slightly better blacks and slightly wider color, either would work but I'd probably go with the JVC this case as that size could use the extra brightness. You will not be able to compare the current 4k with e-shift 4k on such small screen sizes. The larger the screen, the larger the pixel size and the greater the difference between the real and fake 4k. I would use at least 120 "for comparison. You use 50-60" and for this screen size you should sit 36-44" from it. Sony gave clear recommendations for using their 4k projectors: distance from the eyes to the screen should be equal to 1.5 X height of the screen. Thanks for review.
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
Your viewing distance of 1.5 X screen height is correct, however the close ups and viewing for these comparisons are much much closer than than. If you look closely you will see we are up as close as 12" on the dual 70" screens (140" together) so, much closer than even 1.5x. Also, take a look at the high res stills at www.tvspecialists.com/sony-vpl-vw385es-vs-jvc-dla-x790r-projector-comparison-part-i-2/ for more additional comparisons on these two projectors.

You say the 2 projectors are calibrated. But why in this case the JVC is brighter ? With their Iris they can be set up to the same brightness.
@Tvspecialists5 жыл бұрын
Great question, the JVC is Brighter than the Sony which is an advantage for HDR 4K images. If we had used the Iris to bring the JVC down it would not show one of the JVC advantages. For other than HDR images some would argue that they be set the same but for this comparison we chose to show their actual light output.

@tedbollinger33065 жыл бұрын
Unless your screen is larger than 140" I would personally go with the Sony for two reasons. The first is that it is native 4K vs eShift5 so depending on your distance to screen the Sony will be more detailed. The second reason is contrast and HDR as the new Sony's are on their 3rd generation (or more) of this 4K technology and their blacks in 4K and their new HDR tone mapping is now very good. Either would be good but the Sony definitely has the edge in my opinion between these two.
@georgepopescu13275 жыл бұрын
Ted Bollinger thank you , I have read some oppionions that this Sony isn't capable of real blacks and in scenes like night sky the black will look gray. I haven't seen the projector my self so I don't really know what to think. By the way the screen is 120 inch and the viewing distance is somehow simmilar so it's pretty close.

@tedbollinger33065 жыл бұрын
That is a tough choice, both would work but I would probably go with the JVC due to the larger screen and higher brightness of the JVC. The Sony is now the 695ES and has improved blacks but the blacks on the 790 are hard to beat. The Sony has the advantage in detail and sharpness due to its native 4K so either would work so choice is either slightly better detail on the Sony or slightly better blacks on the JVC.

If they're both calibrated, why has the Sony a green overtone? Also, looking at the edges of shapes up close, the convergence on the Sony seems a little off.
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
We've learned a few things about shooting these comparisons videos and as much as we try to get a close calibration, usually within a few hundred degrees, the camera almost always seems to overemphasize the differences. To the eye they are actually much closer as far as white point and skin tone, but there are some differences. We do not do a full greyscale tracking calibration and so some differences could also be attributed to to that as well. In this comparison we were mainly interested in the differences in color gamut, black levels and contrast. As you may also be aware the 285ES has been replaced by the VPL-VW295ES which has improved the black levels and the HDR brightness as well. We hope to do a comparison of than in the next couple of months.

Hi, does the JVC dla x590r do blacks as good as the x790r ?
@Tvspecialists6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for inquiring about the JVC projectors. The X590R does have a lower contrast ratio than the X790R. The 590 is at 400,000:1 where the 790 is at 1,300,000:1. We haven’t specifically tested the 590, but knowing other projectors with a similar ratios, the 590 will not have as good of blacks as the 790. However, without seeing the two projectors side by side, you probably won’t notice a difference. When we’ve tested projectors individually, black level look great. Once the projectors are tested side by side, this is when we really start to notice difference, especially with similarly spec’d projectors. Hope this answered you question. If you have any more, let us know.

You might have 100 000$ for the whole HT, so you might have a 10 000$ budget for the projector. Who knows, maybe someday displays will be so cheap, that you can buy a 120-150 inch 21:9 OLED or whatever the future technology will be screen. I recently read somewhere that a company made a cinema with an LCD screen that has better blacks than even the Dolby cinemas. At one of the tech shows this year i also saw how you can just stitch together frameless panels and sync them, making them 1 big display without bezels. So yea. I wonder that the future display/sound tech is going to be.

Hi, Ted. How does that JVC picture quality comopare to the JVC x990r?
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
Great question, the DLA-X990R is a higher contrast version of the DLA-X790R. It has hand-picked DLA panels that are tested to be the best of the best. According to JVC it is even higher in its contrast ratio and black levels. However, as in all things with high performance you do pay a premium for that extra 30,000:1 contrast, so a total of 160,000:1 or 130,000:1 in the case of the DLA-X790R. You also get an extra 100 lumens of brightness in the X990R for the extra $2,000 the X990 costs. If you want one you will need to act fast as the X990R are now discontinued and the new DLA-NX7 which is the native 4K replacement in that price range is only 80,000:1 as it is much more difficult to get the high contrast and blacks in true 4K projectors.

What is your opinion. X790r or NX7 sitting 14 feet from a 115” black diamond 1.4 screen?

Since I have only seen the NX7 at CEDIA in the JVC booth with lots of light in the area and JVC is saying that the NX7 is only about 40% of the contrast (80,000 vs 130,000) of the X790 it is hard to say for sure. Knowing at this point how good the e-shift5 is on the X790 I would have to say at this point without seeing them side by side the X790 is probably going to look as good or better at 14' on a 115" screen and at thousands of dollars less.

@truhunk16 жыл бұрын

@Tvspecialists6 жыл бұрын
Claude, between the JVC and the Sony, the Sony will have the sharper image since it is 4K and is displaying actual pixels. The JVC is faking the 4K with the 4K eShift. When a projector does a 4K eShift, it’s duplicating pixels to make the 4K. This always results in a softer image. The Blacks and Highlights look great with both projectors. It all comes down to whether or not you want a nice sharp image in 4K. If that is what you want, the Sony is the projector for you. I hope this answered your question.
@truhunk16 жыл бұрын
TV Specialists dba TVS Pro . Well, your video was quite detailed, but my comment wasn't about picture sharpness. It was about the whites and some reflections being blown out on the JVC. Most of the detail was lost in a blob of white. It may look different in person, but being reproduced on my screen the whites were blown out. You actually pointed it out with the rocket fuel burning behind the ship. It's sort of like a loss of shadow detail, but with white.
@TheBMurda6 жыл бұрын
The camera's exposure capability cannot capture the dynamic range being displayed from both projectors at the same time. If they exposed for the highlights of the JVC the Sony would be underexposed. The JVC would not look like that in person. It would simply look brighter/better since it has much higher contrast.

JVC's e-shift5 is their improvement over the previous e-shift4, unfortunately JVC doe not give any real details that I have been able to to find but I can tell you it is a visibly improvement. Since the DLA-X790R uses the newer e-shift5 it is what is shown here and is very good. It is still however, not as good as actual 4k as in this Sony if you are within the 1.5X the height recommended 4K viewing zone. If 2X or more viewing distance it would be hard for most people to tell. The only current version of e-shift5 is the X790R as the others are all now discontinued.

They both are going for the same price on amazon....so I wanted to know the difference. Thank you.
@Tvspecialists6 жыл бұрын
The DLA-X700R was discontinued back in 2013. It is only 1920x1080 with 4K eShift, just like the 790, however, the 700 is not HDCP 2.2 compliant. This means that it cannot accept any 4K signal or any content that is 2.2 compliant. The 790 is 2.2 compliant so it can accept all 4K signals. Though the 790 isn’t 4K, it will play all 4K content. Also, the 790 is a brighter projector. The 790 is 1900 lumens where the 700 is only 1300 lumens. The 700 also, only has a contrast ratio of 120,000:1 where the 790 is 1,300,000:1. The 790 does have better blacks. If you’re going to purchase one or the other, especially at the same price, the 790 is the better projector. Hope this answers your question. In regards to the Epson 5040UB, see the upcoming blog and video which we compare the Epson 5040UB to the Optoma UHD65 and the JVC LX-UH1 (In editing right now). Proclaiming a projector as 'better' is a much more complex issue than a simple answer.
@networkn6 жыл бұрын
Hi. I wonder if you are able to tell me what your recommendation would be. I am considering the 285ES Sony, the JVC x590 and the Optoma UHD65. I am primarily gaming and hoping for 4K HDR ideally at 60FPS which I know the Sony has an issue with colour banding. In your experience is turning off HDR going to reduce the experience much? Gaming Lag is a factor, so the Sony and JVC are first in this area as they are similarly low. I also want 3D, and I watch a lot of live sports. I watch a new BD movies. Thanks for any assistance you might be prepared to give.
@Tvspecialists6 жыл бұрын
For starters, we would recommend either the Sony 285ES or the JVC X590R. The reasons behind this recommendation is first you want 3D. The Optoma does not do 3D. The latency for the 285ES is 36ms in Gaming Mode with a 1080p signal, and a 4K 60p source has a latency of around 55ms. The Sony does down sample the 4K 60p 10-bit signal to 8bit, so there can be color banding. We don’t have actual latency numbers on the JVC, but it is getting great reviews from gamers. The Optoma is lucky if it gets down to 80ms. The Sony is native 4K (4096x2160). The JVC is 1080p (1920x1080) with 4K eShift, though it will accept all 4K signals. The Sony will have better detail and be a bit sharper than the JVC. The 4K eShift can soften the image slightly. However, not seeing the two projectors side by side, you won’t notice the slight softening. Both projectors are in the same price range of $5,000.00. We hope this answers your questions. If you have more questions, let us know.
