TWIN TROLLER X10 WEED REMOVAL TOOL
Learn how easy it is to build and use a weed removal tool for the Twin Troller.
Watch me build this tool so you can do it yourself. This is very effective at removing weeds from the bottom of the Twin Troller without needing to leave your seat or reach into the water. 😁
I never launch the boat launch without this tool. When you need one it can be priceless.

I remembered that you did a video about a weed tool and after rescuing those two boys the other day I had to go back and watch it again. My TT is pretty much weedless but those metal grates of mine were also crammed full of crap up to and around the propellers because of all the thick thick crap I had to go through to pull them out. Luckily that day one of those two wet boys just jumped right in the nice clean water (NO GATORS) and reached under and cleaned the stuff out. I have decided I need one of your weed tools cause I won't always have someone else to clean me out. Don't want to make anyone think this boat isn't mostly weedless but when you start turning around in circles which only the TT can do you are going to get crap up in there sometimes. Thanks Gerry

Steve, I made that tool a long time ago. There are few things you can do when making something from scratch that you do perfectly the first time. I never launch my Twin Troller without that tool and even after four years I would not change the design at all. It is easy and inexpensive to make, takes up virtually no room in the boat, and I am surprised when TT owners do not have one in there boat. I would rather take the TT out with just one fishing rod with an old rusty hook than to go without that tool. Gerry

I used your dimensions to make one out of a mixture of spare CPVC / PVC pipe. I used a reciprocating saw to cut a flat top on the part that scrapes (to better catch the weeds). This way it's more lightweight and doesn't sink so fast. Also it's more ergonomic to handle.

Did you try it yet? I would be surprised if it is strong enough. I sometimes need the stong metal to pull the weeds out
@EcoNeato
@EcoNeato Жыл бұрын
@@LunkerFishing I tried it today and it's totally ineffective. The Lilly pads/weeds are extremely thick where I am and require hand pulling out of the hull which is dangerous due to gators and I can only reach half way. I have to pull hard, so I don't imagine the metal rod would do it either in this case.

With the metal too I have never been unable to remove the weeds enough to get going again. The thinner metal with the nubs on it catch the weeds and is strong enough to sweep and pull the weeds out. I have never reached down to remove the weeds by hand due to the same concerns you have. That is why I made the tool.

@@LunkerFishing Not sure what you mean by "I have never been unable to", but it looks like you are saying the rebar does work well? I think the manufacturer should have a sweeper built in that we can manually operate, like a windshield wiper except of course stronger. The aluminum ribs bend and break easy too, should be stainless steel but they were trying to keep profits up as stainless costs more.

Hey, Gerry, I finally got a chance to use your tool the other day. I went to a new lake I wanted to try out. When I got to the ramp, there was an air boat pulling out. I should have known right away. After about 100 feet off the ramp... Hydrilla, and lots of it. After going through about 100yds of open water, hydrilla, open water, hydrilla, and using your tool 10 times, I figured it was time to get back. The good news? I got back. Without your tool, I wouldn't have tried going out. Thanks, Gerry. Look forward to seeing you again soon.

The guards over the trolling motors on the bottom of the boat do a good job of blocking items from getting into the prop like sticks or probably trot lines. Soft weeds like hydrilla can get sucked through the grates but usually get wrapped around the grates and not the props. My tool does a great job of removing the weeds enough that the trolling motors function again. you can also lay down in n the boat and reach over the side to clear the weeds also but the tool is more convenient. I also have the Honda 2.3 on the back and I am amazed how well that cuts through weeds also. most people do not go in the kind of marshes I go in and I have never been unable to get home.

Looking good, Gerry. A good rule of thumb is, if the grass is rooted, the TTX10 can get through. If it's loose, it can get caught up in the motors, as you already know. The TTX10 is a great boat but it's not a hovercraft. Great tool!

Accurate statement! Hydrilla matted on the surface can be difficult (as well as probably Eurasian Milfoil) but I found that if I go at the slowest speed I usually do not suck those weeds into the props. Other floating plants like Hyacinths and rooted plants like Kissimmee grass, bulrush, or buggy whips, are easy to push through. The most difficult are soft stringy weeds that are loose and all the way to the surface. The tool gets me through all of them if the props get fouled.

I have had it twisted up so bad I could not move many times. I fish in dense marsh areas sometimes. That tool gets me free every time. I would not set sail without it.

I always wondered what would happen if you went to far in some grass. And no one on any videos ever talk about that. I bet some of the Lilly pads get hung up to but I don't know for sure any way that tool I bet gets it out pretty good

Thank you for the video Sir. I notice to put two inch pieces of tubing on the bottom. Do you see any disadvantages to running the tube full length on the bottom? Just thinking better protection. New Boat in Sarasota don't want damage anything.
@LunkerFishing
@LunkerFishing Жыл бұрын
The bare rod surface has a rougher surface and has little nubs that help grab the weeds so you can sweep and cut and pull them out.The 2" piece of tubing on the end is to protect the TT hull since that part of the rod protrudes past the opening for the grates and rubs on the surface of the hull.

Thanks for the video. I'm not an owner yet, just doing my homework on it. Could the prop grate be modified with a heavy gauged chicken wire secured to it to help prevent fouls?
@LunkerFishing
@LunkerFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Zachary, you will not regret when you place your order. I do not think any wire on the grates would help. Weeds are not much of a problem unless you drive over a soft loose weed like hydrilla or possibly Eurasian milfoil that has grown almost or all the way to the surface. Other weeds like Lilly pads or eel grass or Kissimmee grass is not a problem. You can drive right through all that with little problem. If you do a search through my videos for my weed control tool I think that is the best thing to clear weeds from the grates while fishing. It is inexpensive and not difficult to make and the video shows how to do that. I ALWAYS have that tool in my boat. Gerry

Thank you for your video about weed removal from the X10. This has been a recurring issue in my mind regarding the X10. I am a recent "snowbirder" and I'm looking for a boat like the X10 to use on the small / medium size lakes in Highlands and Polk Counties. The lake nearest my house has extensive hydrila beds and I'm concerned about them clogging the trolling motors. When the weeds clog the motor inlets do they also wrap around the prop and if so how does one remove the weeds wrapped around the prop while on the water? Any comments regarding my concerns or techniques for resolving them would be appreciated.
@LunkerFishing
@LunkerFishing 6 жыл бұрын
Gary, I too had that concern about clearing the weeds while on the water. That is how I came up with the idea for the tool. If I am going over a patch of weeds that are soft like hydrilla I just slow down to the slowest speed and cross over the weeds until I get to clear water or where the weeds are lower in the water column and cannot get into the props. If the weeds are firm like Lilly pads I usually just ignore them and the TT usually goes over them as if they were not there. It is only the soft weeds that cause much of a problem but that is where the tool comes in. I fish in heavy weed areas often but have never been unable to clear enough of the weeds to get myself going again. The rough texture of the re-bar seems to grab the weeds well and pull them from the grates ever the trolling motors. Some soft weeds will get on the props but most seem to stick on the grates. The tool clears the weeds from the grates and once that is done shifting from forward to reverse a few times clears the props. If hydrilla was matted on the surface you do not want to go into that but you would not do that with any other boat either. When I built the tool I made an extra for David from Freedom Electric Marine and he offered to sell them on the TT website if I wanted to make them. I did not want to waste my time making them and not fishing so I decided to make this video so anyone can make one for themselves. There are few times in life that you can make something and after the first one is done not find a way to make it better. I got it right the first time and you can to if you follow the video. Gary you will like the TT, especially for the ability to fish the kinds of lakes you describe. It is about the lowest maintenance that you can have for a fishing boat and it gets the job done without sacrificing comfort. You may not run the lake at 70 MPH but your cost for operating this boat and the east of maintenance is a fraction of a big boat. Let us know when you get the TT and send some photos of your fish. I hope this helped, Gerry

Randy, sorry for the late answer I just saw your post. I take my TT in some pretty nasty stuff and even had one motor shut down from the strain of the grass on the prop but in a few minutes the motor started working again. I used the tool to get the weeds off the bottom of the boat and off I went fishing again. There is no place I am afraid to go because I fear I may foul the props too bad. The only thing that would stop me from going someplace is if that day I do not feel energetic enough to waste the time using the tool to remove the weeds. Sometimes I look at the weeds in an area and say to myself that it is probably too thick for the fish to be in there so why bother. The short answer is that I NEVER got so stuck I could not get myself out with this tool. One word of caution: Make sure you use the lanyard around your wrist so you do not lose the tool. It does not float at all and it is soooo important to me that I would not want to lose it. Because it is made of metal rod there is no way you could break it but it certainly could slip out of your hand and sink to the bottom. To answer you other post also, Lilly Pads are not much of a problem for the TT. They rarely get sucked into the props and the tool removes them easily. It is loose soft weeds that cause the biggest problem like hydrilla or probably eurasian milfoil but even then the tool gets them out.

its dangerous to have any steel bar facing up in a wet boat, one slip and that steel rod may cause a serious accident.

Good point. I store it in the rear of the boat. Not being able to get home due to weeds and having to swim home with very large gators is also quite dangerous. I prefer the metal rod but I get your point. (Not an intentional pun, but a good one nonetheless) Gerry
