Here is my last response to all those who believe 我们猫都喜欢 is wrong. (Sigh...) As @ Liu Laoshi explained in his/her comment:"This structure is called "Object+comment" 猫 (obj.) + 我们都喜欢 (Comment) or not too common: subj +obj+ comment without subj: 我们+猫+都喜欢。 It is correct. " The main purpose of the video is to introduce the difference between 所有的 and 都, and to point out the common mistake of "都+noun". The most common way Chinese would say this is "我们喜欢所有的猫。“ or "我们所有的猫都喜欢。”. So I can understand why some Chinese people find the sentence "我们猫都喜欢。”sounds off. However, although it is a less used pattern, grammatically, it is still correct. And in practice, as native Chinese, I do say it that way. 如果有中国的朋友觉得“我们猫都喜欢” 听起来很别扭,那是不是“我们所有猫都喜欢。”或者“我们什么猫都喜欢。”这样的句式你听起来更顺耳吧?但是,当我们省略了“所有”或者“什么”仅保留“都”,倒装句“我们猫都喜欢” 句子从语法上来说还是成立的,只是不常见而已。

Since Chinese doesn't use plural, 貓 could be plural or singular. However, just like English, if it is sigular there needs to be either a definite or indefinite article in the front (i.e. this cat, the cat or a cat). If it's plural, then the article is omitted: We all like (all) cats. It's no different in Chinese. So if you say "我們都喜歡貓”, to a Chinese it is implied we love all cats. Else the sentence would be 我們都喜歡(這隻)貓 (we all love THIS cat). But it is also correct to say in Chinese 貓我們都喜歡 (cats, we all like) , it is less common in English though.

I have a question. your explanation of 都 in a sentence all using plural subject. but I came across "我都知道'"in a song. I understand that 都 describes the subject which is 我, (in your case is 我们) then the meaning, could it be "I all understand" ? really?
@qianfeizhou82652 жыл бұрын
In your case, there are two possible situations. If we say 我都知道 with an emphasis on 都, it means I know all (of the context). And if we put stress on 我, it means a 连…都 pattern instead, and 我都知道=(连)我都知道 and 都 here doesn’t mean “all” any more, instead it means “even”, therefore, 我都知道 would be translated to Even I know (it). Hope my explanation could help.

hi, I have two confusing sentences, 中餐,西餐,我都喜欢 and 我中餐西餐都喜欢。 first 都 is to describe subject I and second is to describe object 中餐西餐?
@mountaintag3 жыл бұрын
Both of your sentences seem okay to me. In the teacher's example, 我们 was plural, so 我们都 meant "all of us". In your first example 我都 couldn't really be translated as "all of me". That wouldn't make sense. So, when the teacher said that 都 could refer to the subject before it, maybe we could extend that rule to say that 都 could refer to the items ( plural items ! ) before it. In both of your examples, these are 中餐西餐.

If you want to say "I watch all TV shows", the correct way to say it would be " 电视我都喜欢看。“ Similarly, if you want to say "he likes all cars", you would say: 车他都喜欢。 and for the last sentence, we will say: 这些书都是我的。as suggested by the comment above. After 这, which means this, we will need a measure word as clarified in my measure word video.

@ChineseGrammarSimplified4 жыл бұрын
Md. Fahim Shahriar The first one is correct, the second one is not. In the first sentence, you have a subject verb object structure. 好 in here is to describe the object “people 人”. So that‘s the reason why you need to have the verb “是”. Look at English. It’s saying “you are all good people”. If we do not have the object “people 人” in the sentence, and just say “you are all good” , then we do not need 是, and we will build it as 你们都很好。

Can I say 貓我們都喜歡 for the second sentence?
@ChineseGrammarSimplified3 жыл бұрын

貓 here is topic, while the rest of sentence is comment. In Chinese, Topic-Comment usually uses in conversational Chinese. But normally, in formal 我們都喜歡 貓. Let's see such as this sentence: 她嗓子发炎了。 means She has a sore throat, In Chinese, 她 here is Topic, 嗓子 is subject, and 发炎 is intransitive verb. We can campare 我们猫都喜欢. Since 喜欢 is transitive, then normal 猫 should be shifted in the beginning of the sentence. In Chinese grammer, there are no definete or indefinite articles (the/a(n) in Chinese. Compare to these two sentenses: 笔在哪儿 ? "笔" here refers to "definite reference" means( "The pen(s) are there.") ; 哪儿有笔 ?"笔" in this sentence as an object, in which refers to "indefinite reference" (Where is a pen or Where are there some pens ?) Please see Basic Chinese, Yip Po-Ching & Don Rimmington (1998, p48).

无论哪种理解方式,这句“我们猫都喜欢”都≠“we like all cats”。其实换个思路,咱们中文是有“We like all cats”的完美翻译的,“我们所有的猫都喜欢”是不是听起来“人话”多了😂,而且你视频里也介绍了“所有的”的用法,如果可以的话还是建议改一下😊。
