Are you ever stuck in traffic and just want to, just Mad Max through it all? The Twisted Metal series can be your outlet for that. The first one has ironic tones with it's CARnage as a man name Calypso grants the winners wishes with a twist. But then Twisted Metal Black was made for the PS2, and they were going dark and gritty. In fact it got an M rating. The cars, the character backstories, there's so much detail for a game that lacks color and makes it literally, well, dark.

THANK YOU!! I got the first two messages, and part of the third one (I got "I miss my friends. I miss my family. I miss just") before I gave up in frustration! I feel bad, but my brain doesn't process numbers squashed together like that. Especially when there are so many, as it (my brain) will skip over numbers, or just become overwhelmed and stop processing what it's doing. Plus, it really didn't help that certain numbers were missing, causing certain words to end up misspelled.

This video has so much love and care in it. For a game that's almost twenty years old. From a niche genre. From a series that hasn't been relevant in years and may never be again. This is one of the first games I ever played as a little girl, and it will forever hold a special place in my heart. My uncle was a graphic designer for this title and a few others in the fanchise. He did TM2, Black, Head-On, and the most recent iteration in the series: Twisted Metal PS3. He did a ton of the designs for the different cars in the roster and he loved working on the design for these cars and he's insanely talented at car design and cross sections of mechanical stuff too, however he hated that the series was so dark as he is a rather religious guy. He's long since moved on from the series but I believe he still develops games for mobile devices nowadays.

Jaffe said if he did another one the maps would be much smaller, like instead of being able to rock a huge map itd just be sections. I didnt mind the sections as long as I'd be able to play a full huge map, but if he did another itd just be sections of 4 different types of maps and that seems underwhelming. Bring back different characters too, being able to play as your favorite character in different cars was nice... But only 4? And they really only mattered for story, useless otherwise.

You can just hear how much Jirard loves twisted metal. even when he went through the effort to mimic the style of character intros at the start and how he does minion's coded message shtick in each transition. i love it

It took this episode in particular to really show me how much I love this new format and new editing style of the show. Instead of having just 'The Story', or 'The Gameplay', we have personalized themes specific to each game and subsequently, each episode of the show, like detailing how Metroid: Zero Mission gives you the exact feelings a Metroid game *should* give you as you progress through it. The codes and breaking them are a brilliant idea that tie in amazingly to the game itself, and really give the impression that you're in the mind of a crazy person. Or maybe just a completionist. Or maybe just THE Completionist. Either way, it's *just like* they do in game. And it's horrifying, just like the ones in game. Metroid: Zero Mission gave me the same kind of feels, but this one truly unnerved and horrified me. My hat is off to you Jirard. I can't wait to see what else you do.

Fun fact, the UK version of the game was completely stripped of it's story mode. It still had campaign but the story was completely cut. And Goddamn is that disappointing because this game has one of the best stories for this type of game I have ever seen. And yes it was cut on the PS4 re-release as well. We have an age rating system to, in fact ours is a legal requirement and a lot more strict. There is no reason for this especially nowadays.

I LOVE the environmental damage you can do in that game! Like the mortar weapons that can cause endless craters if you keep using them, so so satisfying to bury your enemies in the ground 😁 and weapons like the missiles that could attach to enemy vehicles and push them away...so cool

This was one of my favorite games and the first game I ever had cheat codes for. It's so dark and twisted and I just enjoyed it so much! It was right around the time that I was starting to get 'dark' and 'moody' as a teen so having a game where I could just drive around and blow shit up was awesome. TM3 has bad controls, lame characters, boring stages, just overall a bad game, especially considering TM2 is a grand masterpiece, possibly the best game of all time. I'm sure if I tried TM2 I would find it better, which is cool, but that's not my opinion, since I haven't. Just like I know that Super Paper Mario and the others could never be nearly as good as TTYD was, downgrades all around, but they can still be enjoyed by myself and others. Just like TM3 had fun secrets like the UFO Lazer and such, Super Paper Mario has it's story! Except for Sticker Star, the only Mario game that stresses me out to play, it was so bad 😂 Haven't tried Color Splash so I can't have an opinion on that one 🤷🏻‍♂️

Cheesy 'so bad it's good' cutscenes are probably the most enjoyable part of the older games, even 3 and 4. It's drenched in that late 90's/early 2000's vibe you just don't see anymore, it's got charm even if it's completely ridiculous and goofy. Black curb stomps that silly side of Twisted Metal and replaces it with morbid insanity. I like 'em all (except the ps3? one, never played it so I don't have an opinion) for different reasons, but the TM Black style of insanity I find most interesting.

Jirard was on a recent Cooptional Podcast, and he said something about trying to tailor the tone of each episode to reflect something about the game, like how they tried to make the DuckTales episode sound like a 90s commercial. I'd guess that's why he sounds more tense and almost overly-serious here.

Yes, Needles Kane is the clown and Sweet Tooth is the ice cream truck that he drives, although some games (including Twisted Metal: Black) call him by the truck’s name. It’s possible that Needles simply has “Sweet Tooth” as an additional alias in-universe.

Even though this was all in Sweet Tooth's head, on thing that I didn't like was the fact that Calypso didn't end each play through like the original games saying "I am Calypso, and I thank you for playing Twisted Metal.'' I dunno, even with the darker tone, it would've been a nice callback. In any case, sweet video, I wonder if you'll do any of my favorite games, the Armored Core series, From Software's series before Dark Souls.

Not really. I played this game when it came out. It was a solid favorite until PS3 launched. I'd say just have a decent constitution. Some friends of mine eventually felt off from all the dark, grisly stories for hours.

I agree, though there really isn't a lot to say regarding a game like TMB, so I can't completely blame him. The only real completionist goals are getting all the black cubes, unlocking the extra cars, and getting all the endings, which he touched base on all of those things. Regardless, I do see what you all are saying, something does seem off.

My personal favorite was the head on port for PS2. Effectively a sequel to both Twisted Metal Black and the original series in one game. Also it was so so so fun to play. I just wish that it like the games before it could be played in my CD player

I liked Small Brawl. The concept of kids plying around to win whatever their childish desires are and that a fair number of them even get revenge on Calypso for bullying them. The Micro Machines settings also make it pretty cool.

I respect the different tone reading for this review, and it makes sense for a dark and gritty game like Twisted Metal Black, but I feel at times its not working in the right way. Honestly, the Completionist we all know in love for his up beat and wacky jokes is the best version of you Jirard.
