Kevin Marshall Sorry to hear that-it was more painful for me the second day too. How did you sprain it? If you haven’t already, it might be worth to get an Xray done to make sure you don’t have a hairline fracture. My ankle is much better! It was a moderate sprain so I’ve been put in a boot and can get around now without too much difficulty. It’ll take about a month and a half to heal.

Big tip here.. happend to my while doing flatground tricks too.. you have to go faster when practicing flatground tricks. Because when you fail you will fall and roll the energy out. Now my ligament is forever injured and I can only build up my leg muscle to support it. I wish i was more careful on that day. That is the only regret I have in my whole life. Before, I have never thought having the uninjured body is such a blessing and cannot be exchanged with anything.

So general advice not specific to you, if you hear a pop that can tend to mean an injury to the ligament. But at the same time it can just be clicking of your subtalar joint which may not be much. Be safe and get evaluated, especially if there is associated pain and swelling, hope you feel better!

@@DrTomBiernacki What do you do if there is an injury to the ligament?
@lorenzogonzales72205 жыл бұрын
CikMJ It depends how bad it is. A grade 1 ankle sprain is just a stretch to the ligament and you should still be able to walk with very little pain. It should heal pretty fast. If it’s a grade 2 ankle sprain (partially torn ligaments) then you could be out of sports for 8 weeks, have trouble walking and in more pain. If it’s a grade 3 (full tear to the ligaments) then you could be out of sports for 3 months and you aren’t able to walk at all. Visit a doctor if you are unable to walk or are having trouble to walk as your ligaments could be torn. Also use the RICE method as well. Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate. The RICE method can help reduce swelling but it won’t heal it. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the informative video! Really put my mind at ease. I recently rolled my foot playing football and heard a loud snap. Almost Instantly the pain started to kick in to the point where I couldn’t put much weight on it without pain. The next day was far better and I could limp around pretty pain free as long as I didn’t press too hard. Day 3 was even better, I could almost walk normally with minimal pain. Do you reckon this falls under the stage 1 sprain ?

@@DrTomBiernacki given what i just said, would you expect this to be a type 1 sprain? of course you couldn't comment accurately from behind a computer screen but i would just like a good idea of what to expect.
@BOMERdeath1232 жыл бұрын
@@Jake-xn9xk Rescue Medic here (and one year too late). The snap very much sounds like Grade 2 or 3. The first is a overstretched Ligament with minor tearing that wont cause any snapping sounds that will be heard without a stethoscope. Type 2 and 3 are major to full tears that will cause ligament injuries to be recognizable by sound.
@Arkenva2 жыл бұрын
@@BOMERdeath123 How do you listen for that? We have a stethoscope here. I heard a crack for sure the moment I injured it, I freaked out that I broke my foot, but there is no bruising. I could not put any weight on it the first day, and I was scared to at all the next day (wanted to give time to heal just in case). There is definite swelling plus pain/tenderness when I brush my fingers just lightly over the ATFL area. Tomorrow I want to try and really gradually add a little weight/practice a little and literally only once or twice every few hours. I’m definitely scared of re-injuring.
@BOMERdeath1232 жыл бұрын
@@Arkenva No Stethoscope needed. It's a audible Snap/Crack Sound. You very much likely have a Second to Third degree Sprain, especially the weight issue confirms that. Don't use your leg for at least a week. Keep it elevated above the heart, use Diclofenac, compression bandages and cooling.

I had the same problem a week ago. When I was sitting I could rest it on the floor but when I stood up I could barley put any weight on it and it was very painful. However its been a week now and I'm able to walk on my foot with it pointed slightly sideways but still needs some rest. I'm able to put more weight on it but can't balance on 1 leg yet. I'd guess you have a grade 2 sprain as I injured mine basically in the same way and faced the same problems.

Thank you. I Slipped off the bottom step of our stairs on Sunday. Have been hobbling around the house with a cane and thought why not look on youtube? I haven't got an ankle brace so have strapped it up with kinesiology tape (watched a video for how to) and a thick pair of socks just so it has 'some ' support, Not perfect but it is allowing walking from room to room.

I've twisted my ankle(s) so many times it's ridiculous...it seems after you twist it once it just keeps happening. Anyway, one thing I've found works almost miraculously is comfree gel. It speeds up the healing process by days if not weeks. That said, icing and compression is obviously a must.

Same here as far as repeat sprains to my left ankle. I had a severe 3rd degree sprain (torn ligament/bone chips) after running down stairs full speed and hitting the last stair wrong. I will never forget the "crack" I heard, convinced I broke my foot. Turns out it was the ligament snapping apart. For me the one thing that seemed to help so much was a physical therapist massaging the ankle joint, which seemed to speed up the healing, and got me back faster to running and sports. (Sorry about the length; you know how it is when people start talking about their injuries!)

That's so true it seems once you sprain your ankle it weakens it and it keeps happening. I rolled my ankle on November 6 and fell breaking my elbow which required surgery. But my ankle is still tender and after listening to his video it should have been healed already! Next appointment I will let my primary know

Think of a sprained ankle as two phases: 1) Initially control the inflammation and pain, 2) You have to keep it protected to let the ankle heal. A really important thing to remember is just because stuff makes it feel better, it does not mean the ankle is healed! Hello. In '86, my senior year of HS, I dislocated my left ankle during football practice when I planted my foot to go right, rolling it completely to the inside. I heard a loud "Pop" sound and went down. I didn't feel much pain. After they put it back in, I had severe swelling with very deep purple under the skin from bleeding all the way around the ankle for weeks. Do you think there's a good chance I tore ligaments when it happened? They never operated on it if I did. I tweaked it once during basic training for a split second. My heart jumped into my throat but I was okay. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. Edit: I just wanted to say I really enjoyed the video and I learned that I didn't take proper care of my ankle after it dislocated especially when it came to rehab. ✌️

Hello doc, so about everyday i go outside i play basketball in my backyard, And also everyday i end up rolling my ankle ( im very clumsy ). But today when i rolled it, it was different. I heard a pop when i landed, and went straight to the ground. Unlike the other ones i was there for a good 1-2 minutes. When i walk now it hurts severely on my ankle, and right below it it is very swollen. Should i go to the doctor or is it fine ?

I recently rolled my ankle (last Saturday) while hiking. It's something that I re-injured, but this time was different. I ended up hiking back out to my truck with minimal pain. My ankle was swollen and bruised (a little tender) and I could bear weight on it without sharp pains. My ankle felt stable, had good range of motion in every direction. There is some pain when doing calf stretches, but it's not intolerable. I have been doing PRICE since the incident. I'm reluctant to go in because last time this happened and was recovering, my PCM didn't seem to be worried as long as I was progressing and not in pain. So, It's weird that it looked worse than how it feels. Again, I can stand on the injured foot and balance fine, I can do calf raises fine and rotate my ankle up/down, left/right. Last time this happened a few months ago, it felt worse and I was less stable...any thoughts? Oh, I played softball on it 4 days later and felt fine (used ASO brace for stability/protection).

We find chronic and continuing pain is usually not the ligament that was injured, but stiffness through the ankle and Achilles tendon from compensating (pronating). There is many thing it can be, but at the same time soreness can take a few months to go away completely! If worried get some professional assistance!

I wouldn't worry about your ankle taking longer to heal at all, as long as it doesn't get worse. I had a severe 3rd degree ankle sprain (torn ligament, bone chips), and even with a bulky brace and several months of physical therapy, my ankle still felt stiff and painful. Turns out it simply needed TIME to heal due to the bad injury (It's fine now). Three things I learned: 1) For me a phy therapist massaging the ankle joint was like heaven, helping so much with the stiffness and scar tissue (but probably too soon for you yet). 2) Don't rush back to sports or activities too soon! I kept thinking I "should" be healed by now, but clearly wasn't ready yet, and suffered several setbacks, wasting valuable healing time. With injuries, always err on the side of caution. 3) Many people (myself included) who suffer a bad ankle sprain seem to re-sprain the same ankle. It might be due to the ankle being weaker now, or still not comfortable with it in activities, but it's something to be aware of. Anyway, good luck, you'll be good to go in no time!

@@markb20 hi bro its been exactly one month for my sprained ankle and i still cant put weight in it.Do u think i should start visit a phisical therapist and also start doing some exercise for it
@markb202 жыл бұрын
@@m4teoff384 Hey dude, sorry to hear about your injury. I'm guessing you either had x-rays to rule out a break, or just have improved enough to know it's not broken, right? I would check with your doc or a phy therapist about that, really. Even when I started phy therapy (after my cast came off), there was this aggressive therapist that moved my foot around so much it f-king hurt like hell! I complained, another therapist helped me using gentler exercises (and deep tissue massage, which was incredible), and I was able to start my own exercises at home. I guess without knowing how bad your ankle is (1st, 2nd 3rd degree sprain? 1st degree is a stretching of the ligament, 2nd is partial tearing, 3rd degree- what I had- is a complete tear. They can usually tell by the amount of swelling, dark bruising showing up, and how much pain). Can you put weight on it without pain? I remember that was something they looked at. Pain- especially pain that doesn't improve- usually means you still need time to heal. But there is ALSO the danger of letting too much scar tissue form if the ligament tore. And that's where physical therapy comes in. Along with trying to make the ankle stronger again, they want to try to break up the scar tissue "adhesions" that form in a tear. That's where you need a doctor or therapist- to figure out if your injury has healed enough to start moving it around to make it strong again. Sorry this is so long- people love talking about their old injuries! Last thing- I remember people telling me when they heard I ripped my ankle ligament, "You would have been better off just breaking a bone". They were right. Soft tissue injuries suck- they can take longer to heal completely, depending on how bad it is. Anyway, good luck, no doubt you'll be good as new in no time!
@m4teoff3842 жыл бұрын
@@markb20 Very relatable bro fr😭 Yes i did make a x-rays and the doc said that it wasnt broken and then he said that “it would have been better if u broke it” Im not sure if i have a 2 or 3 grade tho but i think its a bad 2 grade.I havent really felt any pain except the first 5 days when i used to feel some pain but i think it was because of a cream i used to supply. Well i cant really put weight on my leg rn.If i put weight it feels like my ankle will move out of its place,i can put just a little weight tho. So i think its a very bad 2 grade sprained ankle as I would feel more pain right? Btw it can heals without a surgery? Thanks bro and would love to hear more from u

I cringe each time I watch these ankle sprain videos; I was running down stairs full speed, left foot caught the last stair wrong, and heard a loud "crack" as I fell to the ground. I thought I broke it, but was told later it was the ligament(s) tearing apart. Had a "severe" 3rd degree sprain- 2 torn ligaments with bone chips (about 10 years ago). They were on the fence about surgery (mostly to remove the bone chips); I opted for a hard cast for 1-2 months, then 3 months of physical therapy with a walking brace. I also received steroid injections into the ankle joint. All told, 6 months to heal, but it took a year to get back to my running again, and several years for the ankle stiffness to get better. I received all kinds of advice for a severe 3rd degree ankle injury like I had, but among the best- while healing, don't say you sprained the ankle- people think of "twisted" ankles. Say you tore the ligament(s), which gives them a better idea of what happened. 2) The physical therapy was great, but without a doubt the ankle/ligaments massage was like Nirvana! Helped with the stiffness and scar tissue so much. 3) If involved with sports, don't rush back, and don't let others (always your "buddies") try to hurry you back to play. I had several setbacks due to giving in. If I only knew then what I know now... (the story of my life!).

My foot even three weeks on is severely swollen and the bruises are the same as to this video, if not more. I feel its all 3 parts of the ankle but mostly the middle and top bit. The hospital xrayed it on the day I had the accident and said it wasn't broken but felt like it at the time. I have crutches and icing it but they didn't splint or put it in a boot or anything. It's hard during lockdown too I can't go anywhere. Very educational video though I was like wow your describing what happened to my foot and the way I can't bend it.

This is the best video explaining the typical ankle sprain I've seen. I just tore all three of those ligaments but the weird part is very little pain and I was walking around on it for the first couple days (out i wilderness away from medical treatment). the bruising is atrocious and my doctor gasped at that and the swelling, but I don't even have a limp. Xray came back no acute fractures or malalignment so no idea why I am not in agony (compared to other bad sprains I've had that were not as severe as this but caused intense pain).

The third day, It was bruised the most. Like there was a line of bruising parallel with my feet and my whole foot was a couple of shades darker. Its been exactly a week now and I walk with no pain but when I try to full extend my ankle out, It hurts on my third ligament that you said usually doesn't get hurt, and also the first ligament ( which still has a bump of soreness on it) Should I be worried or just give it a week of rest?
