Sharon is the first singer in white. Yes she is self taught I hear a lot of complaints about her breath control and the way she holds (eats) the mic. My untrained ear however can rarely hear what the issue is to me she sounds what I imagine an angel would sound like. The second singer, in black is Anneke van Giersbergen (no relation to Dianne), she is kind of the godmother of the Dutch female fronted metal scene. Anneke always looks like she is having so much fun. I'm not sure how she can always have that cheshire cat grin on and sing at the same time. To my knowledge Anneke never "taught" Floor personally but she was one of her biggest inspirations for becoming a singer. As the story goes a young miss Jansen heard Anneke at Pinkpop in I believe 96 and said that's what I want to do. She went back to school and joined After Forever at age 16. She sang for 2-3 years before going to the first Dutch rock academy. I'm not sure how much formal training she had up to this point. I do know that one of the coaches she has worked with is Amanda Sommerville but as they are about the same age and Amanda is married to After Forever's Bassist I think this was after the rock Academy instead of part of it. So you have now heard Anneke, Sharon, Floor, Simone, & Dianne. It is only fitting that you now listen to some Delain so you can hear Charlotte and complete your Dutch metal maiden experience.

Yes, Floor heard the song, "Strange Machines" from The Gathering with Anneke and was inspired not only to really like metal, but also to imagine being a metal singer as well. As a female metal singer, Anneke was a huge inspiration, not only to Floor but also to many others.

it left one who`s not dutch but has been involved in all of this from 2005, Marcela Bovio (Elfonia, Stream of Passion, Ayreon, Vuur, MaYaN, Dark Horse White Horse), to study. Shes been singing with all the other ladies and bands and was handpicked by Arjen and called to Europe from Mexico

I had the very same impression of her. I've seen her once (Agua de Annique) in 2008 performing to a really small crowd in a festival. She didn't mind at all. She was giving everyhing she got and smiling so wide it just made me smile the whole gig. I've still never seen anything like that in my life. What a woman.

By duets in metal they love to sing with Anneke. First she was for many singers the insparation to start to do metal, but seccond she has the ability to blend with every voice. My favorite duets of her are with Devon Townsend IH-AH and with Paskal Jakobsen with a Dutch song Porselein.

Sharon is a self taught singer. 2 days prior to this concert, she lost her voice. As someone who has listened to Within Temptation for a long time, I can hear the difference in Sharon's voice. Sharon also designs her own outfits. Sharon is the one in white. Sharon has also sang with Floor on an After Forever song called 'Beyond me'. I love this song so much, thanks for your reaction and analysis. One thing about Sharons breath technique, she had a flue and just recovered enought to sing this concert so yea, was a bit difficult. To be honest I am not that much into Annekke's musical carreer, but I will leave you a few Within Temptation songs. From this show, "The Promise", "Mother Earth" or "The truth beneath the Rose" are definetily worth a reaction. Other than that, I would recommend "Memories", "Paradise" (featering Tarja), their new song "The Purge", "Endless War", "And we run" (feat. Xzibit, wierd combination, but it's amazing), "The Howling", "Stairway to the skys" or "In the Middle of the Night". Oh and they did a few covers of popular songs such as "Let her go" or "Summertime Sadness" they are very good. Also Sharons solo project "my Indigo is amazing, shows what all she can do. If you need live versions, I will try and find some that are not recorded with a phone xD. Anyway, great work I will leave a sub.

Aye, that control, that 'colour' of her timbre. You recognised Anneke's trademark vocal qualities immediately there. Very nice. She has more exceptional talents though. Hope you'll experience them too when checking out some more. Anneke had lessons and started in a Jazz duo before she joined pioneering goth/doom metal band The Gathering. They made 6+ much acclaimed studio albums and some amazing concert dvds together (while shifting towards trip rock). You have now only just scratched the surface of what Anneke is capable of. Best check her out in het natural environment where she proved to be a true force of nature and shows why she became Hevy Devy's metal Tinkerbell and one of prog and metal's most hired legends. Start with one of the epic performances she did in The Gathering's 25 anniversary show: preferably 'Travel' or 'Waking Hour'. No, Annie didn't teach Floor. She inspired her and many others though. Main source of that was TG's landmark album 'Mandylion' (1995) and their live performance at Pinkpop 1996. Their track 'Strange Machines' and Anneke's performance there is often referred to and also worth checking for the young and charismatic singer she already was back then. Hmm ... go arrange interviews with Annie, Devy and Arjen. Or even have combined ones maybe? Good luck!

If you haven't you should react to Tarja and Sharon from Within Temptation singing Paradise. Sharon had a cold. The guy sitting next to the piano is Sharon's partner. Sharon is self taught and she probably designed her outfit Anneke is in shorts and an amazing singer. Floor started singing her style by listening to Anneke with her band The Gathering. The song was Strange Machines and you should do it at Pink Pop. Within Temptation has a new video called The Purge. Anneke released a single from her Acoustic album calledcThe Promise. Anneke also sings Travel and its about Mozart. Also from the Gathering.

Great reaction. Some fact-checking: I don't think it is true that Anneke was Floor's voice teacher at any point, although she did inspire her, and they became friends, and Anneke may have been something of a mentor for Floor. But no teaching at all, as far as I know. See the documentary Soaring Highs and Brutal Lows. Else prove me wrong.

Anneke was the reason Floor wanted to sing in a Matal band. Floor firts heared Slayer and she was put of but than hearred Anneke with "The Gathering" and was inspired. 👍🎶🐱‍👤

Fun thing is that Sharon was actually having quite a bad cold right up until this show. And to be frank you can hear it if you know how she normally sounds. But it ends up still working very well all through the Black Symphony show. I'm probably a bit weird but one of my favourite moments is The Other Half (Of Me), a song from their EP The Dance from back when they still used death metal growls. I like that one a lot :-)

Great reaction! Thanks. There is a lot of interesting WT songs to listen to (well worth listening). Anneke has done a lot of great stuff! The Gathering (Strange machines and Travel - I prefer the TG25 version - for example are a good listen). The Gentle Storm (has the feel of Ayreon ;) ), collabs with Devin Townsend, and of course her solo tours. Check her out please ;) Other band to suggest: Delain fronted by Charlotte Wessels is another Dutch band worth listening to.

SHARON den Adel has a much wider range.. deep too. LISTEN TO the song PALE by WITHIN TEMPTATION or others... she is very powerful and aggressive in many of their harder songs too. THIS song is not representative of her abilities since 1997 or till today even. Sharon has been my favorite adult female singer for some time now, now tied with 15 yr old Angelina Jordan, LOL. Sharon lost her voice a couple days prior to this massive one-off show/filming. But got it back, sort of, the morning of the show, so she did not get the rehearsal stuff in. She also said the loss had came back with a "choral" quality to her tone, that is, not all pure, but as if two or more singing.... I think. This is not even the best song performance of this MASSIVELY GREAT SHOW.. The DVD is worth purchasing, watching more than once over time. Oh.. and SHARON/Within Temptation were early on their career/run considered to be more CELTIC METAL or Gothic Metal. Maybe go listen to ENTER, or THE DANCE, or MOTHER EARTH album content. Maybe search the song RESTLESS for a real early one. OR MOTHER EARTH song or ICE QUEEN. Other notables are WHAT HAVE YOU DONE NOW, STAND MY GROUND, MEMORIES, FORGIVEN, PALE, and about 20 other songs, all prior to 2011. anneke's voice is sooo much superior in all aspects.. My friend, some 20 years ago, said it very simple (he does not really like female singers in metal). He said. "the girl from within temptation has that typical "foreigner" annoying high pitch voice.. While anneke's voice is 1 in 10 billions"...and the word you were looking for is "bright"... Anneke's voice is super bright, while sharon is.. oh well.. much more flat and typical....

Anneke completely steals the show here (and mostly anywhere, really) and has far better microphone technique but a lot of the fault is with the equipment Sharon's using, her mic is just such a strange pick from the sound guy (or whoever picked it), the EQ and compression are all sorts of messed up, etc. Something just sounds off, because it is. She is good though, and her voice is wonderful.

You can hear a little strain in her voice, but nothing short of beautiful still. The sign of a good singer, trained or not, is the ability to use technique to get through difficult situations that they would otherwise not have control over. Brava to both of them!

People can go on about technique as much as they want but Sharon's voice is way more unique. Anneke is very good but sounds just like most good female singers. Sharon sounds like an angel.
