@@CharlieCalottaReacts It was probably a combination of being over worked and emotional distress. She'd been with her first band since she was 16, they broke up in 2009 (she was 28), losing that band was very hard on her. It coincided with the really bad end of her romantic relationship. She threw together a new band and the global economic collapse happened, so money because a bit of a worry, she started teaching to supplement her income. The stress of starting over combined with the emotional hits she'd taken just got to her eventually.

Funny fact: most of Nightwish popular hits was not written for Floor, but Floor made most of that songs even better. For instance, Ghost Love Score and Poet and the Pendulum was not written for her, but she made it absolutely hers. She even brought back to life some earlier songs that was simply not valued before, like Devil and a Deep Dark Ocean. After Buenos Aires, 15 years old song became absolute hit.

You should listen to Shoemaker. Floor said in an interview that when composing this song they struggled with the end of it, then Floor took it home to work on it. She later said that she finally got a good end to the song but listening back she surprised herself with it thinking: "Is this me?" Apparently she found a new layer to her voice. Btw articulation is a big part in singing in the Netherlands. Singers often learn to speak the lyrics before they start singing it and a some of them get lessons in speaking without accents. It also helps that in the Netherlands they learn English and not American in school and that helps a lot in pronouncing the words completely and helps a better jaw movement.

Floor totally changed the way this song was delivered vocally. This was written during the Tarja era, so this would have originally been performed in a purely operatic vocal style.

Floor had been with the band for roughly 10 months at the time of this show. She was not yet an official member of the band, They had done 2 other "big" shows back in Europe since Floor came aboard, but Wacken was her defacto introduction to many of their fans across the continent. Floor has said she was very focused on singing every note perfectly for this show, especially where Ghost Love Score is concerned as it's her favorite Nightwish song, and they had changed up the ending at her request. At the time of this show, no songs had been written "for Floor" all the songs being done were from albums made with Tarja and Anette. If Floor's vocals sound brighter, or younger, in the performances from this show, that's because it was 7 years ago now. The audio mix from this performance is also a work of art, I mean look how bad the video quality is as compared to the sound quality. I'm sure that has something to do with it as well. Great reactions, I'm really enjoying the Nightwish content, and I'd love to try to find one of your streams to watch them live. Keep it up.

In Episode 17 of the Endless Forms Most Beautiful album documentary, the interviewer asks Tuomas a question. He starts off with his reply talking about writing songs to fit Floor's voice, then he laughs derisively at himself for saying something ridiculous. I think what you're hearing her is her progression with the band rather than anything about fitting music to her voice. Floor had been with the band for ten months here and had not been officially announced as the permanent lead singer. She joined Nightwish in Seattle in October 2012 after flying over from the Netherlands, while learning the setlist on the plane. Here's an interesting exercise for you. Listen to "Ghost Love Score" at Buenos Airies 2012, two monthes after she joined the band, then here at Wacken in 2013 and then later at Tampere in 2015. We see not so much her growth vocally (and she has grown in her Nightwish time), but rather the growth in confidence that comes with being secure in her position and in her knowledge of their discography. I totally agree that Tuomas + Floor has enabled both to soar. Listen to the Human :||: Nature album to see how far they have progressed.
@billattercliffe86554 жыл бұрын
Nothing in Wacken was written with Floor in mind. It was all Tarja and Anette music. "Third and last" also refers to a comment made by Tuomas that if Floor leaves, that's it for Nightwish. BTW, a lot of the music in the Decades tour in 2018 was the old stuff.

I believe you're correct in pointing out Floor's growing confidence as Nightwish's singer, both as a member of the band and in her comfort with music originally written for other singers. In the years since, Floor has freed Tuomas to write whatever he wants - there are no limitations to work around, as Floor can sing whatever he writes. This freedom has also pushed Tuomas' creative efforts; he now has to write better material, to take full advantage Floor's capabilities. Both of them benefit, and as a result, WE benefit. I'm really looking forward to the next twenty years of this band - we may have to redefine the word "Epic". Again. (MAKE AMERICA NIGHTWISH)

@RaymondBCrisp4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Floor most often re-interprets the vocal parts to add emphasis to the song she's performing. Watch both Tarja's and Floor's versions of Ghost Love Score to see this play out. Floor could have sung the whole song in purely operatic fashion had that been her preference. Instead, she switched things up vocally, going from an angelic operatic vocal at the beginning, to a head/chest mix just before the interlude, then coming out after the interlude into a full on chest belt voice, and moving on to a section where she goes from operatic to a raspy tone, then she adds in some operatic stabs (which I've heard several music instructor reactors refer to as an advanced technique), and finally finishes out with an amazing belt that raises most everyone's eyebrows when they hear it. They may both be great, because Tarja is a great vocalist, but you tell me which rendition you think is more vocally interesting? My money's on Floor's version.
@kookoo92353 жыл бұрын

But she does rock her way through these very well... Annette was the rebound girl for the band. They had to change the music to fit her less powerful output... One thing i've been wondering since i heard Tuomas was thinking in 1996 while imagening about this "small project band" ("maybe some demos - but definitely no gigs" 😁 ) He was thinking about a band with flutes etc, and a female singer -doing some etheric melodic songs.. well, how i heard smtg from those earliest, i think it's good they first went wholly to dramatic and dark, even blackish. But what about now.. isn't the circle closing: he can do all the things they've been doing, and also that esotheric soft, angelic, floaty, melodic, harmonic, fairylike ... She'll live through all of those. And do it with such devotion it was like her breathing -so natural, honest and real

The best quality live video I've found of him is a cover of a popular Finnish song called "Mombasa" (it's quite a simple song, just six verses with no chorus, and he doesn't really show his range until the last few seconds, but I still love it). The video is under the name Raskasta Iskelmää, but it's easy to find. His first solo song "Kuoppa", or any song he sings with Dark Sarah or his first band Charon show his voice very well, too.

Sleeping Sun is also not written for Floor.... By the way, Tuomas Holopainen wanted Floor as a singer in 2004 after Tarja had to leave, but she had her own band so Anette Olson joined Nightwish. The first album written for Floor are on the album Endless forms most beautiful 2015.

She said in a recent Fan Friday that Everdream was the hardest NW song she had to learn as it was so high.

I agree. Both said several times in interviews that they did challenge each other to take the best out of each song. Tuomas also has changed some balance s between the choir volume and Floor’s voice and Floor is added some vocal parts which in the original song only the choir was singing. You definitely sees that as you compare the version sung by Tarja at ‘The End of an Era’ concert with the version Floor is singing at Wacken. Floor re-started giving vocal lessons and recently she released #1 and #2 called Vocal MasterClass. #1 was about not to stress the jaw and #2 about breath control. In it I think she explained how you could be so relaxed while singing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXqykn2NaJ2Li7c

Fun fact: Floor is the tallest member of Nightwish. Standing 1.83 m (6 feet amazon goddess). Emmpu is shortest (1.6 m).

My thoughts about what you say about the different sound of Floor's singing 2013 and 2015 is that in 2012 both band and her was in "survival-mode" according to herself. 10 months later she has had some time to do some adjustments 'on the fly' together with the band. But two years later, when "Endless forms..." was released she had the opportunity to shape the songs together with the band from first rehearsal. Listen to this interview with her and Marco, and I think one gets some insight: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH6qoIugj5qWotE

On the last album (Human nature) Tuomas really challenged Floor. Especially in the songs ‘Music’ and ‘Shoemaker’. Only she can sind those songs, I think.

Yeah, I was bummed about that too. Even interrupted him at first. Allthough I can understand why certain reactors (vical coaches, classical/opera singers) focus a lot on Floor (I mean she is fantastic!) to go through THIS song without a marko shoutout... ☹️ No hard feeling though 😀 Still enjoyed the reaction!

Strong suggestion- ANYTHING with Marko singing lead...HIGH HOPES...While Your Lips Are Still Red...The Islander...Song of My Father (not a NW song) and even Phantom of The Opera...👊! Edit: Whoops...didn't wait until 13:24...FANTASTIC!

@@CharlieCalottaReacts Also, Tarja + Marco singing Ever Dream at the same concert. The song was made for her, and as much as I love Floor, Ever Dream is a "Tarja song" in my opinion. Same as Sleeping Sun. Everyone always wants reactions to Floor singing it, but I would love to see more people reacting to Tarja. It is eargasmic. The song was written for Tarja, that's the reason it sounds better with her.

Hey, Charlie! Another nice one (as we're getting used to see)! If I may add something to your commentary that I haven't seen anyone touch on yet... What you said about both the band and Floor growing together since then is on point, of course - but there's something else to it, I think: Floor also appears to have put a lot of effort into each of the older songs in order to not seem to be just mimicking the previous singer they were written for - I guess both as a sign of respect and to avoid needless comparisons (without much success in the later case, I'd venture). Tarja's rendition of this song is a lot more subdued, so I guess she decided to do it on a more "belty" way and on a higher octave to make it distinct - the result is great, as always, but in a sense the delivery is not as dynamic as in some of the other songs, even from that same concert.
@CharlieCalottaReacts4 жыл бұрын
Adriano, you're totally right it would seem. A true vocal artist has to make a song their own while also respecting its history. No room for idleness even if it was written for someone else. The entire culture of vocal teaching surrounds learning from those before you, the teachers and singers who had songs written just for their voices. No room for jealousy or anything that gets in the way of real art. I like your take! Thank you!
@nighthiker4 жыл бұрын
@@CharlieCalottaReacts I am by no means an expert on any of this, be it musicianship or vocal techniques, so please take anything I write with a grain of salt (and feel free to point to anything you feel is a mistake on my part - I'm here to learn, foremostly). Something else that might also be an influence on her performance on this one is that for good or bad (usually good) Floor never strays from what the music would require of her at any given moment. Considering this is one of the less complex, less varied songs as far as composition goes, once she picks the strategy for her delivery there's less room for her to explore different voice qualities. I am inclined to think this way because there are some other songs on that set list that have a lot more contrast to them, and where she uses both this "beltier" approach but also lighter, warmer tones, like in "She Is My Sin". I'd love to hear your thoughts on this once you reach that one.
@marioariasp82084 жыл бұрын
As you say these songs are not writed for her and in some specific songs that noticed a lot ( at least if you know Nightwish) for example Planet Hell, Slaying the Dreamer or 10th man down. React to them with Tarja, the first vocalist.
@warhammer56904 жыл бұрын
For an interesting unlabeled bands vocalist check out Liliacs Melody. She has original vocals and covers of Metallica, Joplin, Ozzy, Dio, Jefferson Airplane and Iron Maiden. I'd recommend these three. Iron Maidens The Trooper, then Dios Holy Diver then a dive into originals like Nothing or We Are the Children, then finish with the ballad, Sail Away.
