Correct, it’s only valuable because people think it is. Same goes for money.
@burntsushii3 жыл бұрын
If you really think about it, everything is worthless.
@rolandlee68983 жыл бұрын
@@burntsushii If you want to be super philosophical - perhaps. But even sticking to practical terms diamonds are worthless. A box of matches is worth more than a diamond simply because the former has practical value, a use, and the latter has literally no use, and thus no real value, whatsoever. The only practical use they have is as an abrasive in niche industries. And even in monetary terms, how valuable can something be if youre essentially using as a disposable abrasive (effectively sandpaper)? Its no secret that the diamond industry is one of the biggest scams in relatively recent history.
@rolandlee68983 жыл бұрын
@@burntsushii The only use diamonds have are as an abrasive. Mostly used to polish other diamonds. The primary use of diamonds is jewelry. Its used as an abrasive because its.. surprise, surprise.. cheap! We can produce near unlimited quantities of industrial diamonds. Gold is pretty important in electronics, but of course only a very small amount of all gold is needed/used in any industrial (aka meaningful/useful/valuable) way. Most of the gold we have is made into are literal paperweights serving no actual purpose whatsoever. The reason people consider it valuable is entirely historical, not practical. I understand the "everything is worthless" argument, but thats a philosophical argument. My argument is based on practical usefulness instead, although the "worth" in this case is still abstract and relative. Like a knife has value because its a versatile tool that you can do things with. A diamond in itself has value and no use in any scenario. Aside from its perceived monetary value that is backed up by and based on nothing at all, much like money itself.
