I remember the first time I played this game. I was around 11 or 12, and I played it on the Original Xbox. The first time you see Pyramid Head in the apartments I had a small panic attack. I was still dealing with the creepiness of the monsters, and then I walk out and there he was, just standing there. Didn't move, didn't breathe. I didn't know what it was. And for some reason, before I walked into that room, I noticed those bars looked kind of out of place. I will always remember my reaction.

So, the great knife (very possibly) represents the burden of a sick loved one. Pyramid Head lost it right before Maria was apparently killed. James picks it up right before he discovers Maria alive. Nice touch. It draws a parallel between Pyramid Head and James, and helps establish Maria as a stand in for Mary.

Mr.Neffar It's a story. Stories have set meanings, conflicts, ideas, and conclusions, all written by a writer who intended for these things to be seen by the player the way they are seen. I don't understand why for some reason Silent Hill is an exception to this. I prefer to call it the "Doorman" because I imagine Angela dreading her father coming through the door to her room, and it has a less disturbing ring to it I guess, but it's simply two people on a bed; that was the original intent. If you even get too close to it, it does a pretty suggestive thing to James. Ah whatever, I just mean that I wish people realized that the writer didn't just sit there and think to themselves "How can I create something that has a specific appearance, specific movements, specific sounds, specific surroundings, specific everything, and yet still not have a specific meaning?" Not trying to argue, I just wish SH fans were more open minded. :)
@MrNeffar9 жыл бұрын
***** for someone who wants people to be more open minded your comment sounds extremely close minded.....that being said yes i do understand but there is nothing wrong at all with seeing more or different of something at all, I love when things are known but fuck i also just love it when there are lots of opinions on something!
@MegaMiniMuffins9 жыл бұрын
Mr.Neffar That's what I meant whenever I said that I understand what the true meaning may be and acknowledge it, but I still prefer to call it Doorman just to myself. It's just simpler for me. I get what you mean though. :) It just seems that on forums where SH fans talk about their theories and ideas, nothing gets resolved, and everyone goes off about their "Everyone's idea is right even if it's wrong" attitude. I mean, there's a difference between why you think James wears a green bomber jacket and when you think SH2 takes place, haha.

Mr.Neffar Abstract Daddy works because you're like: "what the hell is this rectangle thing." but if you put together all the symbolism with Angela in the room, the fleshy walls and the explicit thrusting objects on the wall (and the Abstract Daddy's mounting attack) you can establish that it's the trauma of her father raping her.

I don't think that's what that's meant to insinuate. Extreme emotional reactions like with what follows sexual trauma or extreme fear - it's not uncommon to literally physically get sick or feel a lot of sudden reactions or sensations in your body. The voice acting for James really gives me the feeling that, as a character, he just does not give a fuck. Not about the monsters, not about the people he's meeting, and especially not about maria. the only thing he seems to care about is finding mary (who he brings up in most of his cutscenes) and everything else be damned. In that way guy cihi's deadpan, uninteresting acting really does make the character.

The room where you find the great knife being the painting of Pyramid Head is straight up Lovecraft. In the Pickman's Model, the main character is taken through an old building and shown paintings of strange dog-like people by Pickman. The final picture he sees is of a giant, bloated dog-thing chewing on the body of a person. Next to the painting is a crumpled piece of paper. The character takes the paper and when he leaves realizes that it's a photograph that Pickman used as a reference for all of the dog monsters.

To anyone who's been in Angela Orosco's shoes, I wish you the best in life, for I have been through a similar fate involving my biological father, but such is life. Having a guardian figure turn against you like that will fuck anyone up in ways but as long as the soul is resilient you can lead a life where your past will release its stranglehold over you. I'm twenty-five and dropped out of college in my freshman undergraduate year and can't hold a job from residual post-trauma; once I stop seeing myself as the victim I will shine. Doorman's name is Abstract Daddy, isn't it? I thought it was meant to represent not only Alessa's past being sexually abused by multiple men of authority in her life but also the abuse Angela suffered from her father (sexually, physically and mentally). The form is meant to look like a larger figure (daddy) and a smaller figure intertwined in either a sexual act or a dominance act. The framing that they said was like a door frame, personally, I've always seen as either a bed frame or a shrink couch (which could symbolize the impact of ones mental and emotional state after experiencing trauma, or even how a person of trust or authority took advantage of them).
@CosmicWaltz79 жыл бұрын
The boss enemy here is not officially called the "Doorman". That name was given to it by the third party strategy guide, but the actual name given by developers is the "Abstract Daddy". Makes more sense, since the "door" making the base of the enemy is supposed to represent a bed, and a smaller figure being held down on it by a larger figure. This is also why both Angela and James can see it, since it has a double meaning, but the one around Angela is much more powerful than the ones you find later in the hotel. It's a common misconception since this was a game almost made to sell strategy guides, and yet they went off the cuff naming one of the most symbolic monsters in the whole game.

Turning off the light is what makes them stop, and turning off the radio helps them to not detect you as well. It is even mentioned on articles on SH1 and SH2 when they came out. That's probably why the movie had that scene in which the nurses only moved when the flashlight was turned on. And, Pat, Pyramid can be found in other sections of the Labyrinth, such as the flooded areas. People are still talking about the voice acting? Really, that's all they can say about the game? Looks like people either over-theorize every aspect of the game or don't think at all.

I said this in another post, but I feel like I need to elaborate a bit more so that people new to Silent Hill understand a few things about the games actually made by Team Silent. In the original games, it seemed like the current mental state and emotions of the other characters you encounter had the ability to warp the immediate space around them, as each area you run into them has some sort of theme relating to that particular character going on, which slowly escalates as time goes on and they become more aware of themselves and their crime/sin/guilt/whatever they did to end up there, although I don't think any of the characters see the same things if they're encountering anything at all, or at least they weren't supposed to. Silent Hill is/was generally a place to fight your own demons, not someone else's. In the original Silent Hill, the other characters Harry interacts with either don't see anything (in Cybil's case, although the town appears abandoned to her and she knows something isn't right) or they behave very bizarrely like Eddie and Angela, except Dr. Kaufmann, who's arguably one of the biggest pieces of shit in Silent Hill and the only character besides Harry ever seen in the same room with a monster, albeit a dead one, and it's kind of implied that it's actually just some guy he killed before you got there (as he blatantly tries to shoot Harry after clearly seeing it's just another person, and threatens to kill him later on) unlike Lisa, who knows shit is fucked up but doesn't mention creatures, just that everyone is gone, and Dahlia says that darkness is consuming the town but never actually acknowledges any sort of monsters or "demons", besides Samael/Incubus as far as I know. Cheryl doesn't seem to see anything at all, like Laura, and being that she's the innocence and good left of Alessa, that's where that whole idea that children don't see anything at all comes from, as they haven't done anything deserving punishment and atonement. What one character sees could be completely different from what the other character in the same room is seeing, and in this case with Angela's "Abstract Daddy", I genuinely believe James sees what he sees because of his own repressed feelings and subconsciously piecing Angela's story together, not because he's seeing Angela's monster, especially considering the abstract daddy becomes a regular enemy type for James after this boss battle. He read the article on the floor before entering the room, and if you notice, the door and the walls and floor around the door leading to the boss fight are plastered with the same newspaper, etc. It's implied Eddie has spent the entire game just murdering other people he's run into in the town and hasn't seen any monsters at all, Angela only encounter's her father, and in Lisa's case, she's just completely alone in a room the whole time because that's what she's most afraid of In SIlent Hill 3, Vincent makes a snarky comment to Heather implying the monsters you've been killing the entire game up until that point aren't monsters at all, they just look like monsters to her, which very blatantly implies he doesn't see the same things as her, or at the very least, they don't look like horrific monsters to him, and when Heather becomes horrified and disgusted upon making the connection that she very well may have been going around murdering innocent people this whole time, he simply laughs and waves it off, telling her to relax and that "it's only a joke." Claudia also commands one of the bosses in the game called the "Missionary", and being that Claudia is a crazy demon church cult worshiper it's entirely possible that the monster Heather saw and Claudia gestures to wasn't a monster at all, but some cult follower working for Claudia, and he became warped into a hideous thing due to Heather's hatred for his and Claudia's actions, and later on in the last level of the game, the missionary becomes a regular enemy type throughout the church. Of course, there's a million different ways to interpret Silent Hill, and no one is necessarily wrong or right, but if you only pay attention to the core 3 games that were actually good/had the most to do with Silent Hill in its infancy when it was what it was supposed to be, without 16 hospitals and insane asylums, 8 churches, 4 prisons etc. it's heavily implied that Silent Hill is purgatory and each person's experience there is tailored to their psyche, thus the outrage when Pyramid Head showed up in the movies and later games, because it makes no fucking thematic sense whatsoever. He's quite literally just a manifestation of James himself, of his guilt and the fact James clearly believes himself to be a monster to some degree who deserves to be punished for his feelings and actions towards his late wife, and the resentment he had for her while she was still alive. Pyramid Head's appearance is just a warped countenance of a picture James saw while visiting Silent Hill's historical society of one of the town's executioners who wore red hoods, and James is both his executioner and prisoner, ie. he's a prisoner of his own punishment and he's killing himself. Thus the burden of the great knife being passed from Pyramid Head to James symbolically as he becomes more aware of his situation and himself, the fact Pyramid Head's face is hidden by a heavy, angular and very phallic red helmet that looks extremely uncomfortable and painful to wear, which is also symbolic of James' burden and the guilt weighing on his shoulders, and might represent the fact he doesn't want to recognize himself in such a monster. The way Pyramid Head relates to the other manifestations of James' psyche in that he blatantly captures, abuses, and violates them sexually or otherwise before killing them them is also very symbolic of James and his mental state, as well as Pyramid Head forcing James to relive his wife's death over and over again through the surrogate Maria and his apparent inability to prevent it/save her. Then again you could also easily make the argument that every character in any of the SIlent Hill games is already dead and all this shit is happening in their head, with respects to Jacob's Ladder. Harry died in the car accident at the beginning of the original, James came to Silent Hill and committed suicide the last place he and his wife were happy, etc. Silent Hill really was quite a beautiful concept when it was abstract and weird and anything could happen, before everyone else realized it was awesome and proceeded to shit all over it. SIlent Hill 1 through 4 and Shattered Memories are the only games even worth acknowledging, and even then 1, 2 and 3 are the only ones that matter/stay true to the formula. 4 wasn't even supposed to be a Silent Hill game, and the only thing that made it for me was the subtle and clever tie-ins to the other games, and Shattered Memories is just a SIlent Hill 2-esque take on the first game.

I pretty much agree with everything you typed except for some of the points you made. In my opinion Harry and the others in the first Silent Hill don’t go through their own nightmares but instead through Alessa’s nightmare which was brought on by being internally tortured by Samael after she split her soul, basically giving her nightmares a physical form. Also I believe once Harry and Cheryl came into Silent Hill Cheryl ceased to exist and became nothing more than a projection (albeit physical) with the sole purpose of spreading the Seal of Metatron around the town and using Harry to prevent Samael from birthing or destroy him altogether. In Silent Hill 3 Heather sees the monsters because of the influence the demon baby growing inside of her has on her; it could be that he has the power to materialize the monsters physically. It could also mean that since the demon baby knows that Claudia and Vincent are doing everything they can to help it birth; the monsters that it manifests listen to them, or that missionary monster was created by the Cult. I also believe that when James enters Angela’s room their nightmares overlap hence her monster becomes his but having a different reason to exist in both of their nightmares: Angela was raped; James was/is sexually frustrated. Just like when James fights Eddie in the meat locker. Their nightmares overlap with James taking a peek in Eddies nightmare about him being made fun for being obese and him lashing out on those people(hence the fat bodies in the meat locker), and James sees the dead bodies as his own because of want for punishment for his guilt. But then again all I have typed is just my opinion based on the stuff I read about these awesome games and conclusions I came to on my own from playing. I think that’s all I wanted to say, sorry for the bad spelling a bit sleepy. Great job I really enjoyed the read.

Yeah, I agree with all your points as well, I was more or less trying to make the point that everyone's experience is different based on why they're in Silent Hill to begin with, and I've seen a lot of arguements over whether or not people can see the same things etc. and I think they can see similar things but never really... The same exact thing, because again, I feel like everything you experience in Silent Hill is tailored to that particular person's psyche. BUT YES, all of the above is true! I avoided blatantly saying any of that because I didn't want to post any real spoilers, so... LOL

Abstract Daddy (or whatever you want to call it) is probably my favorite enemy in the game. Its just so utterly bizarre, grotesque, and... ABSTRACT. Its heavy with symbolism, but at the same time its so subtle that many don't pick up on it at first.
@thenetisslow9 жыл бұрын
I thought that Abstract Daddy looks more like a bed frame than a door frame. That's one of the reasons James sees it too. His wife lay in bed dying, he also fantasied about other women.

HA! I knew I remembered there being another Pyramid Head further into the labyrinth. For some reason I never saw it again after the very first time I played the game so I thought I was nuts. Also I used to recite Maria's lines from the cutscene where she's in jail using the same inflections and tone of voice as she did. Creeped my old boyfriend right the fuck out.

I love the way Angela's trauma and paranoia compliments James's guilt. It shows every component of everyone's respective journey is calculated so precisely, and really hits home that there's no salvation anywhere in the town, even in other people going through the same experience.

"That's the oppressor." I uh... I don't know about that, Pat. When I got the Oppressor Tablet, I first thought of pyramid head- but on my second playthrough, knowing the secrets and the whole James = Pyramid Head thing, well, I figured Oppressor = James. There were symbolic tablets for everyone major, and Pyramid Head wasn't that major in comparison to Maria and Angela, or at least, wasn't as fit for a comparison to the tablets as they were. This writhing mass of flesh in a mattress box spring can't be symbolic of the Oppressor Tablet because the Oppressor Tablet was a figment of James' Silent Hill, and this monster is clearly a figment of Angela's. And we know that their nightmares bleed into James', of course, but that's not the point, Angela wasn't even around or relevant at the time we found the tablets.

No, Pat, the most dangerous way you can hold a shotgun is backwards (i.e. put the barrel in your shoulder and aim the stock at something). The second most dangerous way is to brace the stock against your groin and pull the trigger. Trust me, those things kick like a mule.

I subscribe to the theory that Maria is a stripper that James fell in love with while fooling around with her and then they made a kinky sex tape in the hotel that he left there. *SPOILER* The reason James sees himself smothering Mary while he watches the tape is symbolic to him killing their relationship, as she dies of her disease after James leaves her as implied by the conversation heard in the final hallway he is wrought with guilt and totally forgets Maria as he goes to face his demons in Silent Hill. This was a joke that I was making that I ran with because I like the way it sounded, it's mostly bullshit.

Golemie It's not really short. Being a LP and all, they can't take too long paying attention to details and checking around. There's a lot of hidden stuff in SH games. A lot.
@Golemie9 жыл бұрын
Marcello Domingues de Melo Lemos Even with paying attention to small details it's not a long game. The game consists of the Apartments, Hospital, Prison, Labyrinth, and the Hotel. Each, if you're not completely lost, take maybe an hour or 2. My first playthrough of the game lasted about eight hours and I got lost constantly. Hidden stuff doesn't make the game any longer man, even the optional areas like Pyramid Head's little home takes like five minutes to traverse. It's pretty damn short.

Also, this week on Things Pat Gets Wrong About Silent Hill 2, Which Would Be Fine If He Didn't Present Every Passing Thought He Has About the Game as Gospel: James does in fact refer to Pyramid Head as Pyramid Head one more time, or technically two: immediately after the final boss fight with Pyramid Head, upon inspection of either one, James will say "Pyramid Head isn't moving anymore."
@magicrectangleEnt9 жыл бұрын
Also, does the game ever tell you that Angela's last name is Orosco? I feel like that was something Pat said without it being in the game.
@raunchyopposition9 жыл бұрын
runujhkj I believe it says "Angela Orosco" on the grave with Eddie's and James'.

Oh and one more thing: the name of the monster attached to the "door" (it's actually a bed frame) is typically "Abstract Daddy," not "Doorman." raunchyopposition Yeah, he's been doing that left and right this playthrough. Kinda makes me wonder what the point of this playthrough is if Pat is just going to spoil all of the background information, or even to clarify it all to death.

I know this was so long ago, but it just hit me how brilliant the dialogue between James and Maria was just now. It's super creepy because she BAITS you into thinking "is that mary now?" but then she tells you shes not! SHE'S WHAT JAMES LUSTS FOR MARY TO BE ARGHHH. I love it! stuff like this is so much more brilliant than some horror movie. Good call not talking during cutscenes. this is probably one of the best channels to dissect silent hill 2, and that's rare considering sbfp almost never stfu lol

It's interesting how SH2 is kinda about all the sins that come from male nature. Eddie killed people just because he wanted to or they were in his way. The whole situation with Angela and her speech about all men being the same and just taking what they want. And of course the main storyline is kinda all about James being a horny motherfucker. And then of course there is Pyramid Head with his design being a male with deformed head and carrying around ether a giant sword or a spear, both are quite prominent phalic sybols. So there's that
